For that price, fixed wing aircraft would have been a must.

Question, then: what kind (and how long) of catapult could have been fitted to this vessel ? 50 metres ? 75 metres ?

Thanks guys, so it sounds like its going to be a big’ish dockyard job.

    You’re welcome. 🙂

Ans, yes, I’m afraid it will be some big job. Meanwhile I wonder if the handfull of French/British subs are enough to insure the permanent deterring capabilities of their respective countries. That’s what happens when one consider it’s “enough” to keep the “strictly minimum level” in defense capabilities When one part is missing and there’s no spare, the whole system can stop altogether…

Maybe Merlock could give us an update from the French perspective ?

    Well, yes.

According to Ouest-France, the Ship is “More damaged than announced”
    http://www.ouest-france.fr/actu/actuDet_–i-Le-Triomphant-i-plus-endommage-qu-annonce-font-size=2-INFO-OUEST-FRANCE-font-_39382-831191_actu.Htm

And from the Blog “Secret D?fense”:
    http://secretdefense.blogs.liberation.fr/defense/2009/02/dautres-dgts-su.html

In short, the fact that the ship is to be repaired at the Cherbourg arsenal and not at its ?le-Longue home base is a clear clue that damage are more serious than expected…

the subs did exactly what they were supposed to do, avoid detection,

    Right! 😀

Next step: avoid collision with French subs by navigating Right instead of Left, on the sub…ways !

    Sorry, couldn’t help… 😮

Just because a plane is faster, heavier and more expenisve does not mean it is more useful for COIN tasks.

    Seconded.

Remember in the early 60’s the French Air Force in Algeria was considering the purchase of the OV-1 Mohawk for COIN missions (apparently the jets where not up to the job) in replacemment of its t-6 Texan and t-28 Trojan. The French firm Breguet had even purchased the licence from Grumman…

But the end of the algerian war saw the cancellation of the whole program…

I’d like to see that, got the pic or link?

I’ve seen pics of them landing and taking off unassisted from US Amphib ships.

Me too. But could they carry some useful load, when doing so ?

Tha Bonco is a nice plane and one of my favourite. If it had to be produced again, I would love to see the French armed forces to buy some of them..

BTW, what were the Bronco’s take-off and landing distances without assistance ?

few days later he brings in a pic of an F-4 in a book he found in school library saying this is the Mig-29, see you are wrong hahahaha

    Hu! Hu! 😀

Mine were even better/dumber. After having watched an IAI kfir’s picture with the israeli roundel, they explained me that:

    1-Israel Air Force was a Mig-23 user.
    2-Then it was a pro-communist soviet ally… arab country! 😀
    3-What caption ?

This time I haven’t even bothered to correct them… 😉

Funny story that about the Mig-28 classmate, i liked that.

I had exactly the same argument with two classmates of mine: they swore the Mig-28 existed, whil I explained them it was a mix of “Mig-29” (a then new jet) and “Mil Mi-28” (a then new helicopter), and that they actually were repainted F-5s…

But, see, I was alone and they were two, so I was wrong and they were right…

    *EDIT*

Ho! And by the way, those same classmates were sure that the Mig-23 actually looked like the IAI Kfir after having watched “Iron Eagle 1″…

… and that a Maverick missile could be launched from the ground…

That was back in time when whe were playing some videogames like “Falcon”, “F-19 Stealth Fighter”, “Fighter Bomber” or “F-15 Strike Eagle II”… Good ol’time…

And as we’re at it, stop leasing AN-124s.

And why not buy some An-124 ? After it IS an european aircraft (Ukraine is in Europe, right ?)…

Plus, putting back the AN-70 back in competition with the A-400M wouldn’t be that stupid: competition would err… “help” Airbus to better manage its projects.

    Just my two cents, too…
