How about and I know its a bit of a reach but stay with me…
Aircraft Carrier
By that I mean a ship that can carry a large number of aircraft. Crazy I know but it might just catch on…. :p 😀
Dunno but the way things are going the name is probably toast unless someone can turn it into some sort of crazy acronym.
I assume that as the bay is capable of carrying 2 x 1,000 lb bombs that in RAF/FAA service we can get the F-35 B carrying 4 x 500 lb bombs.
No there are only 4 internal hardpoints, 2 Air-to-Air and 2 Air-to-ground, it would only be possible to carry 2 500Lbs.
You heard strange sounds and lights over Glastonbury on Sunday? You sure it wasn’t the Stevie Wonder set? 😛
More likely it was orbital;)
I’m trying to watch this Iplayer now but it’s being an absolute ***** about it. Now I REALLY want to watch it to see what all the fuss is about.
Way to burst my bubble. 🙁
Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying she was a stunner, but she was rather cute and seemed like a rather nice young lady:)
Great news, even the Register is reporting that the problems are solved (so it must be true:rolleyes:).
Anyone else rather taken with the apprentice electrician?
An apprentice electrician working on nuclear submarines that is cute, blond, female and obviously happy being on film and talking to the camera, I bet the programme makers couldn’t believe their luck, in fact I suspect the entire production team did a ‘high five’ when they saw her.
Couldn’t help but notice there a few cheeky cleavage shots too, naughty cameramen.
Easily big enough for F-35B.
Make sure the deck & lifts can take it, & design in an add-on ski-jump . . .
The generated images suggest fitting a ski-jump wouldn’t be a huge problem, I’d go so far as to say there is large amount of space available that could almost be ‘reserved’ for it.
Placement of the rear lift looks to be much better for fixed wing operations.
…then ship the design over to the UK so we can have a couple to replace HMS ocean 🙂
Rather have a couple of BPEs they’d probably be much cheaper as well.
Well I certainly agree that PFI needs to be kicked into the long grass.
First image of Yasen ( via Ria ) seems like she has skewed prop and not pumpjet

Serious question, not trolling: Now, I know that it was laid down in 93 but was it built without pump jet? Surely props on SSNs was old hat in 93 as well? The last RN boat with a propeller was commissioned in 1983.
Is that in fact true?
Yes, but then the time scale is longer so it’s not really a major surprise.
Also why do many people especially the press keep going on about it being a Cold War relic.
Because the press don’t really understand what they’re talking about and there are people from various groups (including other services) that want to criticise MOD programmes so that ones that are more favourable to them are shown in a more favourable light. CVF has also been referred to as a ‘cold war relic’; it seems its fashionable for any programme that doesn’t directly benefit the army’s transference to a counter-insurgency force to be criticised in this way.
I can see us buying Rafale’s and a Mistral and them buying replenishment ships and an aircraft carrier.
I definitely can’t see this happening.
Fingers crossed that the proposed ‘joint development’ of a MALE UAV does produce a workable relationship and product though. Also we’re co-operating on the FASGW (heavy) programme for Sea Skua replacement.
Well it’s certainly the case that a large number of RFA ships are definitely in need of replacement, hopefully the MARS programme doesn’t get cut to far because the vessels that are due for replacement are getting a little long in the tooth.
Thanks Kev 99 for the link – I read it the interview and my thoughts are that RAF is going to struggle to get any new fast jets (does that mean no F-35 purchases and that they will cancel Tranche 3B of Eurofighter?), and the Navy is going to be configured towards frigates and ocean going patrol vessels/corvettes. Makes you wonder if they think the UK has too many fast jets what they are going to fly of the carriers or if the carriers are going to be converted to commando carriers?
To my mind it’s a case of fewer fast jets for RAF and more airlift, ISTAR and other recon.
It’s possible to still buy the UK’s full allotment of Typhoons and for the RAF to still have a reduced number of fast jets.
Fast jets for the carriers will probably be safe but bought at quite a slow rate.
