People need to stop using the term Kool Aid, very few people outside the USA know or care what it means.
Shrug, dunno.
Err okay we’ll call that one a brain fart:confused:
Little Artisan perched on a mast made for a proper radar, i’d be more than intrested in how much extra a SAMPSON radar costs compared to the Artisan. I would love the C1’s with something more powerfull tha Artisan as it’s really a radar for the C2 and C3 imho.
Bonkers idea is to get 4 Artisan radar faces and integrate them into the mast so it’s a proper array? make our own Thales I-mast. One thing im suprised people in the other thread have not picked up on is the weird panels on the forrad mast big flat things antenna i think.
The flat things are also present on the T45 mast as are the little nodules around the top of the mast just below the radar.
Apparently Artisan is a decent radar, but I’d love to see Sampson on this, or even a single faced version.
500 Mig 19s with no radar, no modern missiles, half the range needed to get to the Falklands and no ability to refuel?…erm i’ll bet on the four Typhoons to win that contest, give the missile apes a lot of practice reloading!
If the Argies bought up a dozen old f16s or a handful of gripen As I might be more worried for 1435.
Why would they even need to reload? just wait for them to crash into the sea when they run out of fuel, the pilots can just put their feet up and engage in an epic tea and biscuits session.
Think its about time this thread got a bump:
From the BVT Stand at DSEi 2009.
My first thoughts are I can’t help but look at the design and think it looks like a moderate sized ship shoved onto the hull of a large one, there seems to be lots of unused deck space, the hanger in particular looks small and I would of thought a full sized dual hanger would make more sense on the versatility front – after all you can always place UAVs in there instead of a Merlin.
Also Artisan looks a little out of place on that huge mast.
Where are the exhaust stacks
Between the radar mast and the Harpoon launchers I would imagine.
Feels like the right place to post this, good that a dual mode Brimstone is now operational and combat proven, even if its not particularly accurate (only 3 carried – What?).
A Taliban fighter was killed by an RAF Top Gun who fired a missile through a hole the size of a grapefruit.
The Harrier jump jet ace spotted the sniper waiting to kill Our Boys from thousands of feet up over Afghanistan.
The insurgent had planned to take out troops as they entered the compound from a tiny “murder hole” in the wall.
But after fixing his cross-hair on the gap the soldier had made, the RAF hero unleashed the new Dual Mode Brimstone Missile with devastating accuracy.
This is the first operational use of the radar-guided supersonic speed weapon.
Three of the 1.8 metre long missiles – which can hit static or moving targets – can be carried by the Harrier GR9 and the Tornado GR4.
Tornado Force Commander Gp Capt Colin Basnett said the “incredibly precise” Brimstone is a vital tool.
He added: “It’s significantly increased the capability of Tornado Force to strike targets.”

UK eyes procurement of additional Chinook helicopters
By Craig HoyleThe UK Ministry of Defence is seeking funds to acquire an additional batch of Boeing CH-47 Chinook transport helicopters, with its action being driven in part by the recent combat loss of two examples in Afghanistan.
According to minister for defence equipment and support Quentin Davies, the MoD is entitled to claim Treasury funding to buy replacements for the lost aircraft. But rather than pursue a purchase on a one-for-one basis, he “hopes to go further”.
Made during a visit to RAF Odiham in Hampshire on 24 September, Davies’ comments came as the MoD announced a £408 million ($650 million) avionics and engine upgrade for the Royal Air Force’s current fleet of 38 Chinook HC2/2As. Dubbed Project Julius, the work will also be implemented on the service’s eight long-range Chinook HC3s, which will finally enter service over a 12-month period starting from November after receiving so-called reversion work to clear them for frontline use.
The new upgrade will incorporate a glass cockpit from Thales as well as Honeywell T55-714 engines, which will deliver improved fuel efficiency and an increase in power of up to 20%. The enhancements will result in the entire fleet having a common equipment configuration, and being better equipped for operations in support of UK and coalition forces in Afghanistan.
Revealing plans to replace the two helicopters which were destroyed in Afghanistan, Davies confirmed: “If we buy more Chinooks we will be making sure that they are fitted to the same [Project Julius] specification.”
Military sources say talks of an attrition buy are at an early stage, but if approved they could lead to the acquisition of a significant number of additional aircraft. This would enable the MoD to make more progress in plugging a gap in battlefield lift capacity highlighted by the UK National Audit Office in 2004, and support the likely conclusions of an ongoing study into its helicopter requirements for the next 30 years.
Other near-term measures include a re-engining programme for some of the British Army’s AgustaWestland Lynx AH9s, and a modernisation and life-extension programme for the RAF’s Puma HC1s which will extend operations of the type until 2025.
Davies says a contract covering the Puma upgrade will be signed “very soon”, despite his opposition to the scheme. The minister earlier this year unsuccessfully pushed for the MoD to instead make a rapid acquisition of UH-60 Black Hawks from US manufacturer Sikorsky.
I see what you mean mate, I like this idea because of the hangar arrangement- main one in the middle for the manned helo and two side ones for the UxV’s (one for UAV in the observational role and the other a UCV for intervention of Pirates and people smugglers).
The model in the DSEi photo has 1 full sized hanger and 1 for UAVs, personally I’d prefer 2 hull sized ones to either arrangement as it would give greater flexibility and you could always fill it full of UAVs easily enough.
Kev old mate, your wish is my command!
Thanks mate, but its not the same ship, that’s another one of the concepts that is floating around for C1, its a damn site better looking than the butt ugly one that was showcased on the BVT stand at DSEi.
Hah, you’re edit has just given me the sole source of information I’ve seen on it that I sent you before the edit:o
Not much to go on really, what I’d like to see is the arrangement and number for the launchers at the front, I hope we don’t just fit A43s for CAMM because I’d like to see a LACM fitted.
Kev i dont have any more pictures sorry just the one which i nicked from the Blog Information Dissemination and i think it came from Janes. I will try and find more pics of it but i doubt there are more.
Nuts, I’ve trying to find pictures of this ever since I heard about it, all of seen so far is the crappy concept art picture which shows absolutely ****** all.
Right there should be an image attached to this:o It’s a BVT C1 design from DSEi 2009.
What about that then? All you would really have to do is remove the Artisan radar slap the CEAFAR and CEAmount mast array on the top of it. On the bow switch out the Mk8 mod 1 gun for the 5″ gun remove the A35/A43 launchers add in the Mk 41 VLS system around 32 cells ideally. The Phalanx mounts i would put them on some sort of structure to raise them up for better arcs. Maybe extend the hangar to have 2 small side spaces for UAV’s and then put the Phalanx mounts on that.
What do people think?
I think I want to see more pictures of this ship, got on any pictures that show the front?
All RAN ships have the read Kangaroo on the funnel. 🙂
You can just see it on the photo below of HMAS ANZAC.
Hadn’t noticed before, thought he was being funny:o
