True enough but London has virtually all museum front’s already including this one with HMS Belfast.
Would be nice to see her turned into a museum, would there be room enough at Portsmouth with most of the surface fleet being relocated there or would it have to be moved to Devonport?
But where would it get Harriers?
That’s the fly in the ointment just there, its not as if there’s a ready supply, maybe we could sell them some of our old Sea Harriers that are in storage. Getting them air-worthy again would cost money and then its stops being cheap and cheerful.
I think he was talking more about fatigue damage from the rough seas more than the alleged successful attacks by the Argentine airforce.
Very pretty;)
What’s in the VLS though?
There’s a plethora of good capital ship names beginning with R just aching to be used for FSC, Revenge is just one of them:diablo:
Allegedly they F35bs could operate from them, probably in quite a limited fashion though, rolling vertical landings or whatever they’re called probably wouldn’t be an option because of space limitations so bring back weight would be a problem.
I wonder if Pakistan wants a cheap and cheerful harrier carrier?
Well I’ve said my piece previously about having Amphibs with ski ramps on as emergency back ups for the CVFs before, I suspect it would be a challenge to get them past the politicians as LHDs and not mini carriers though. They would be pretty big ships and there’s no way we’d get 4, in fact I suspect 3 would be next to impossible.
15 years sounds about right for Ocean, but I suspect there will be a bit of mileage left in Albion and Bulwark as they were not ‘done on the cheap’.
Illustrious will almost certainly have her out of service date postponed to coincide with QE being operational, anything else would be bloody daft.
Invincible, who knows? I can’t see too many customers out there if I’m honest, harriers won’t be operational for ever so that limits her future life to operating helos or maybe as a LPH, with some form of refit improving her internal layout for marines.
Not the treasury’s version of sensible. They’d rather spring for a white bedsheet for troops to wave.
I agree though, we should go for a smaller class for the Commando role. Closer to the size of the Invincible class. Perhaps we could design it more like the French Mistral class or the new Australian Canberra class. That way one class could replace Ocean, Ark Royal, Bulwark and Albion in time.
I’d rather they just skipped the design altogether and built a couple of the existing Juan Carlos/Canberra class as per Swerve’s suggesting, they seem just about ideal to me. The proposal for 2 LHDs is in all likelihood as a replacement for Bulwark, Albion and Ocean, the need to replace these is quite a way off in the future though so maybe by then a better design will appear.
It will all be built over with more stevenage estates eventually, just a matter of time, the Borough Council has designs on conquest.
Maybe but I think a lot of the Government’s grand plans for concreting over the entire M11 corridor and sounding areas has fallen by the wayside of the recession, I’m not convinced the Tories want to do the same.
Think we’ve gone off on a bit of a tangent here though……………..
Haha, I’ve spent most my life living in most of East Herts; Wareside, Stanstead Abbotts, Much Hadham; I’ve lived in Cheshunt for a while but i’ve always gone with the District council and refered to it as Broxbourne (the same with Waltham cross)
Moved to Geordieland when i quit my job at Stanstead Airport
btw HMS Welwyn Garden City would be better than sodding Waltham Cross (whether or not you can count it as a new town or not is another matter…)
😮
I live in Ware, went to school in Stanstead Abbotts and then Hoddesdon.
You really think Welwyn is worse than Waltham Cross?
Nice. Hertfordshire and its many jewels….why did I ever move away?
Oi its not all bad, most of East Herts is quite nice.
Tongue firmly in cheek there! :p I grew up in the first! There was a HMS Stevenage in WW2 as the glorious and delight filled Stevenage museum proudly informs its punters. To be fair to the place it has been the origin of much of the guided weaponry used by HMF.
Lived most of my life just up the road in Stanstead Abbotts, I was the only child of three not born in Harlow Hospital.
You could of gone for a hattrick and added Waltham Cross; AKA the ghetto of East Herts.
Personally I think most of the names for the RN fleet in future should come from old Capital ships and cruisers they had all the best names anyway it would be a shame never to use them again.
How about New Towns for a really inspirational set of names. HMS Stevenage, Harlow, Telford and the terrifying HMS Milton Keynes.
I’m not sure cities work well any more, people just aren’t that proud of names like HMS Birmingham these days.
Speaking as someone that lives within 15 minutes drive of both Harlow and Stevenage you’ve picked some real shockers there:eek:
Fs?
Faithful, Fearless, Fighter, Foresight, Formidable, Fortitude, Fortune & Furious? All used before. I don’t think we should revive Fancy, Fandango, Fiona, Foam or Fubbs on those grounds, though.
Or sailors? Cunningham deserves a ship. Plenty of names used before, e.g. Hood, Rodney, Benbow, Drake, Howard, Effingham (I know, using both would be repetitive), Hawkins, Anson, Barham, Blackwood, Blake, Cochrane, Collingwood if it wasn’t taken, Grenville, Raleigh – plenty of choice. Or some new ones. Fisher? Beatty? Parker (did OK at Copenhagen)? Napier? Fitzroy? Harwood (good job at the River Plate)? Somerville? Jellicoe?
I think we can probably do without Sir Reginald Aylmer Ranfurly Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax.
BTW, the first Duncan was named for an admiral, the hero of Camperdown. I don’t think it’s a bad name.
Some good Fs there.
Agree about Cunnigham, Harwood is an interesting one, don’t think Beatty really deserves one after his performance at Jutland.
Duncan just sounds a bit odd to me.
Lots of good Rs available for the FSC as well, I’d like to see another Warspite too.
