US navy vessels collide in Gulf
    breaking news

Two US navy vessels have collided in the Strait of Hormuz near Iran, lightly injuring 15 sailors, the US navy said.

A navy submarine, the USS Hartford, and an amphibious vessel, the USS New Orleans, collided early on Friday morning, the US Navy Fifth Fleet said.

The incident is being investigated and damage to both ships is being evaluated, a navy statement said.

The fuel tank of the New Orleans was ruptured in the crash, causing an oil spill of 25,000 gallons of diesel.

P15s got Barak in addition to (not in place of) Russian missiles (Shtil), at the cost of a couple of AK630. Same on some of the Rajput (Kashin) class at the cost of a couple of older AK230. P16A was supposed to get Trishul SAM (indigenous but clearly modelled after Russian OSA-M) but due to its terminal delays got Barak instead (they never got Trishil). Only then did some older P16 get Barak in place of their original Russian OSA-M SAMS. Which makes sense logistically. While Barak was ordered for close in protection, orders for the longer ranged Shtil continued (P17, mod-Talwars). Which signals satisfaction with Shtil. Barak-NG/2 is clearly intended a third missile layer.

Original model and drawings of P17 showed her with Kashtan. These at present are not showing on the ship and the presence of Elta radar directors suggests Barak-1 will be used instead.

As for Gorshkov, it was never clear what she would be receiving as armament. My understanding is IN wanted Barak-1 and Russia wanted to sell Kashtan. Presently nothing it fitted. She might yet end up with both …

Is that the Admiral Ushakov (ex Kirov) in the background?

Daring has her missiles, what she doesn’t have is a fully verified system.

Sounds like they haven’t just been showing the flag:

    Chinese ships ‘harass’ US vessel

Five Chinese ships have manoeuvred dangerously close to a US navy vessel in the South China Sea, the US government has said.

US officials said the incident came after days of “increasingly aggressive” acts by Chinese ships.

These violated international law on respecting other users of the seas, a Pentagon spokesman said.

A protest was expected to be delivered to the Chinese military attache at the Pentagon on Monday.

The incident happened on Sunday as the USNS Impeccable was on routine operations in international waters 75 miles (120km) south of Hainan island, a US statement said.

The ships had “aggressively manoeuvred” around the Impeccable “in an apparent co-ordinated effort to harass the US ocean surveillance ship while it was conducting routine operations in international waters”, according to the Pentagon.

The US ship sprayed the Chinese vessel with water from fire hoses to try to force it away, it said.

But it said the Chinese crew stripped to their underwear and carried on approaching to within 25ft (8m).

“The unprofessional manoeuvres by Chinese vessels violated the requirement under international law to operate with due regard for the rights and safety of other lawful users of the ocean,” said Pentagon spokesman Marine Maj Stewart Upton.

“We expect Chinese ships to act responsibly and refrain from provocative activities that could lead to miscalculation or a collision at sea,” he said.

No immediate response from the Chinese government was reported.

But again that doesn’t provide more Chinook airframes. In fact it takes airframes out of service whilst they are being modified to bring all of them up to a common standard.

Do you have a link for the extra Merlin order?

Have a look at the wicki entry for Merlin it’s under there, we got six from somewhere (Denmark?) and ordered replacements for them.

2: Stormshadow will not fit internal bays, paveway will, as for brimstone and meteor, I say we get them both, with MBDA will take care of it to chase customers

Stormshadow we know about, is Paveway official? I ask because the only thing I’ve seen on it suggests that the 1,000 & 2,000lb do not fit internally on the A & C variants which leaves 500lb only for internal carriage. If only the 500lb fit in the internal bays in the A & C then will 500lb fit in the B?

2: F-35 hasn’t started weapons integration yet, so how do you know it wont carry all UK standard munitions?

There’s a lot we don’t really know about weapons integration yet which is probably breeding a lot of uncertainty, lots of suggestion that Storm Shadow and brimstone integration has been deferred, is Meteor being funded? Do Paveways even fit in the B variants internal bays?

If you go to user Cp you can add a user to your ignore list, I believe this will have the desired effect.

Confirmed that live firings of the LMM from Fury took place last year. That is, firings in flight, not from a tethered aircraft.

Very good news for both Fury and LMM, more good stuff involving Team Complex Weapons:D

Anyone know where I can find measurements for the internal bays for the F35B or even better weapons cleared for internal carriage?

And having a massive “budget crush” in hands, where the hell, is the British MOD going to find the money to buy a few sqn´s of the MOST EXPENSIVE JET FIGHTER IN HISTORY?

Not to mention that the UK is already totally committed to buying 232 Typhoons which it can’t realistically back out of, which means it would have to flog off these ‘too expensive’ aircraft presumably at a loss so that it can buy replacement aircraft that are even more expensive.
