maybe when ireland orders its next batch of AW149s which they will eventually, they might be built here?not long until the first batch are delivered to us now!but the IAC is using the AB139 designation for now!
I guess also with a larger and more capable air arm the Irish Republic could also take part in international peacekeeping etc if they so wished.
that is what the AirCorps are working towards.when the General Officer Commanding was asked about the corps deploying aircraft abroad he said “lets get the new helicopters up and running first, prove them at home and take it from there.lets walk before we run”.i consider that to be a positive remark and in the same interview he mentioned that the Air Corps would need an aircraft in the A320 class to support foreign deployments instead of something small like a C27.also the word in baldonnel is that a few medium lift helis like the s92(5ordered but then cancelled) or merlin will be bought in the next few years!so it can only get better for our small air arm.oh incase any of you were wondering about the SF260WEs that were withdrawn they are all to be sold to an american company who will then sell them onto collectors and warbird owners, and there is also a very keen buyer looking at our sole gazelle!
The Irish have no enemies ????? Sober ones maybe but ….
your right Ireland have no enemies as do the czech republic, slovakia, hungry or austria yet they all have fighter squadrons with modern aircraft that are either being replaced or upgraded!the only 2reasons Ireland do not have a squadron of fighters for air defence is because long ago Ireland had to agree to maintain just a small defence force(the army had a limit of 16tanks imposed on it by the British)basically just enough to control the general public and reinforce the garda siochana(Irish police) in times of unrest but not enough to pose a threat to anybody.the second reason is because no politician wants to put his/her neck on the line by agreeing to buy aircraft that cost 30mil a pop!it would be political suicide for them, even more so because the elections are not far off and nothing reels in the voters more than new roads, hospitals and schools!
now that the troubles with Britain are long over im sure they would help defend our airspace if we asked them but we would rather do the job ourselves, its a matter of pride and having the capacity to defend ourselves should the need arise, and its not a case of having fighters just to have them.
are the Americans denying it?
what is the signifigance of those 13red stars under the cockpit of that MiG21?no vitnamiese pilot shot down that many aircraft??
i live in Donegal in Ireland and i see AlouetteIIIs alot coastguard S61s occasionally CASA CN235MPAs(though you have to be looking out for them) and i live under an international flightpath and theres nearly always 1or2 civi jets buzzing about.i use my telescope to zoom in on them!and once about 5years ago a harrier not sure if it was a sea harrier but it was flying slow enough at about 2000foot heading in the derry direction, though one of the british carriers think it was the royal was in about 70miles offshore at the time!maybe it came from her?oh and apart from that iv seen almost every type flown by the irish air corps and alot of british helis too!
you just know someday a sidewinder will be let loose and someone will be shot down!its just a matter of time!
India is still building jaguars aswell and they will probably be flying there still in another 20years!was gripen considered for the indian 126 order?i still think the MiG29M2/MiG35(whatever you want to call it )is going to win that order!.
the dogfight the article mentioned, how serious was it i wonder?how close did the mirages and falcons get?
wow!thats one sweet little plane!had this been the standard variant a few years ago lockheed would have had a few less orders for its f-16!
look at the number of views on that pic of the lovely technicians checking out the back of that fulcrum compared to the amount of views of the flankers!
what a cool pic over the great pyramids!what an unusual formation though!
so its pretty much an SMT upgrade?
how many fighters do the airforce actually have operational?
cool pics!thanks for those!
