Does that photograph come with the certificate of authenticity I demand?
The close in weapon systems most assuredly do not look like Phalanx, perhaps its just artistic licence but possibly the RAN is hoping for some kind of Metal Storm concept to be available by commissioning date.
That’s the new Phalanx CIWS, it dispenses with the 20mm Gatling gun and instead mounts a RAM launcher. There seem to be several variations on a theme, from a straight RAM launcher to something like an 11-shot RAM launcher mated with the Phalanx radar system.
May I suggest Wikipedia.

Does the Swedish AF have plans to fit air-refuelling probes to their Gripens for expeditionary deployments? The routing this group of aircraft took to deploy to Alaska is probably the best advertsement for getting some probes on their birds.
I hereby demand that any and all future pics come with a certificate of authenticity that clearly and explicitly state the following:
Time, date, and location photograph was taken.
Direction photographer was facing.
Description of the subject aircraft’s heading.
Size of shoe the photographer was wearing at the time the photo was taken.
Last dining establishment visited by the photographer prior to the photograph being taken.
Pollen count of the location where the photograph was taken.
And the average airspeed velocity of an unladen African swallow.
Thanks, I think this would really clear things up.
Re-engine projects are seriously expensive, it’s not just new turbines and boilers (there were plenty of options for new high power/ higher efficiency boilers and turbines) but all the auxilliary equipment, wiring, pipes etc. The hull is still an old and limited hull, it’s still very crew intensive and would be very limited in aircraft suitable for deployment without placing major restrictions on payload. Ships can be re-engineered very successfully, but it isn’t cheap and there are still limitations from the hull and size capacity.
If I might say so, you appear to be pissing in the wind, Mr. Turbinia!;)
Former soldier Chavez says he is preparing his armed forces for a U.S. invasion. He has already taken delivery of a big consignment of Russian Kalashnikov automatic rifles.
Sounds like he’s smoking some seriously rancid weed. Guess that’s the only way he can keep his pseudo-Bolivaran revolution going these days.
I would choose the USN crew with the Arleigh Burke as it offers the best combination of men and material.
Too bad that’s not one of the choices Turbinia outlined to you.
B-1R?
It’s an American conspiracy, I tell you!
I won’t get into the argument if this happened or not but I would like to interject on the issue of the USAF having to provide air cover for a carrier. I have been in naval aviation for 16 years now and having entered the “gulf” a few times myself I know this. Prior to entering the Straits of Hormuz the Alert 5 is set, than means that two F-14s or now F/A-18s are on the cats, with pilots in them and the aircraft are cocked (armed for defensive counter air). This is standard SOP for carriers that enter and take station in the Persian Gulf due to the narrowness of water and the close proximity to Iran. I seriously, seriously doubt a call was made for USAF fighters who are alot further away were called to intercept one lonely drone. If scrambled the alert 5 would have launched. I have not read the Navy Times article and do not know what it said but please take with a grain of salt that the Navy Times is not the “official” publication of the U.S. Navy like other papers they are trying to sell papers to make money. Threre are two sides to every story, how many times have U.S. military and CIA UAVs made overflights over Iran without being detected, too many to count with all my fingers and toes. Where was IIRAF????? Sitting on the ramp that is where smiling for the pictures? FLY NAVY!
You do realize you’re spoiling the fun of some the people in this thread by posting stuff based on actual operating experience, right?
Fascinating pictures, tbuzz. I didn’t realize there was a twin-Sidewinder launcher option for the inboard pylon!
Must’ve been a slow day to send that many aircraft up to go laugh at the latest Iranian homebuilt powered by two-stroke weed whacker engine.
I guess there weren’t any of those stealthy flying boats powered by a Toro lawn mower engine spot welded on the back using a ratty lawn chair for a mounting pylon flying around to go laugh at as well.
Y-8F600 uses P&W Canada engines
Well see, there you go. It’s those damn Canadians behind all of this!
Isn’t there a proposal being floated by Beriev to re-launch the A-40 with Progress propfans?
