Any idea where its parked up now? Any chance it’d be at Hurn airport by Bournemouth as the Red Arrows sometimes land there or at least they used to I think. Or were the two F-16’s I saw not Dutch?

The Dutch Display F-16 is operating out of RAF Marham.

Two F-16’s went over a moment ago, one in a fantastic orange looking paint job heading out across the English Channel. Goodbye till next time sweet 16’s 🙂

The Dutch display F-16 will still be in the UK. It is displaying at Lowestoft Air Show today and tomorrow. It will also be displaying at the RAF Marham Families Day today.

There should be none in Iraq now the UK has pulled out, the Seaking HC4 are already in Afghanistan and the Merlin are going out as soon as possible which will help.

The Puma don’t have the hot and high performance to operate in Afghanistan without an upgrade, Eurocopter have presented an upgrade program to the UK which would take the HC1 Puma’s to a new HC2 configuration including new engines. Unfortunately whilst the upgrade is relatively affordable and it is the favored solution over the Sea King HC4 it has got embroiled in Politics because the work will be done in Romania rather then the UK making it less attractive to the politicians and their voters in the current economic situation.

The Sea King already operating in Afghanistan have new composite main rotor blades and 5 blade tail rotor to help them operate hot and high out there.

There should still be 2 RAF Merlins in Iraq. Up until earlier this month there was 3.

    From 7th July

‘Now that UK troop numbers have reduced we can release one of the three helicopters’ explained Squadron leader Mark Biggadike, the Officer Commander the Merlin flight.’

I bet they never thought the Chinook would last this long!

Why? Look at the number of aircraft types that have enjoyed several decades of service.

The planned out service date for the early variant Chinook in RAF service is scheduled for 2015. The Mk2 is down for 2025. Both of these have the capacity to be extended up to 2040. What is your problem with extending the life or upgrading perfectly acceptable airframes able to provide useful service? The U.S. is still operating Vietnam era variant Chinooks that went through an upgrade and rebuild. The U.S. will operate those airframes for decades to come.

    http://www.theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?id=2009-01-15b.245850.h

As already pointed out the use of this Argentine Chinook was a perfectly good use of the type. This Argentine Army CH-47C, serial AE-520, was captured close to the Governor’s residence in Stanley on 14 June 82 and returned to the UK on the 19th August 82. It was assigned a UK serial ZH257 and over the years has been in storage or in use as a ground instructional airframe. It was assigned the maintenance serial 9217M. Another excellent use of captured Argentine helos was the following.

Argentine Coast Guard SA.330L, serial PA-12, was abandoned near to Stanley. This airframe was rebuilt to HC.1 standard and entered service with the RAF during 2001, as Puma HC.1, serial ZE449.

The Chinook story is a complete non-story. Media hype. Desperate to milk certain journalists are now trying to imply that Chinook Bravo November is unfit for purpose and should be in a museum.

Because the cop quoted bogus law & illegally charged him…It looks like the fruitloop may well have been in the right in this case..

If he was illegally charged then he has the chance to have his petition upheld and his conviction quashed. Mancus has even been removed from Nellis AFB media events. The chap it appears is a ticking time bomb. RIAT Fairford probably won’t pass without a Mancus incident.

The American chap already has a criminal conviction over an incident at a US airshow during 2002. Mancus refused a camera baggage/trolley search and the resulting incident led to trial and conviction.

Mancus petition – 288 pages! I lost the will to live half way through!

Well, watching you prove that the air defence system was at “close to zero capacity” is going to be interesting. What we can say for definite is a USAF F-16 was shot down on May 2nd – well into a campaign whose proponents claimed they would shut down the air defence network on the first night*.

    * Please don’t make me search for the hyperbolic statements made by NATO spokesmen in the run up to (and during) the conflict.

Ink you do realise that certain targets were off limits? NATO planners didn’t have full and free reign to attack certain targets that they wanted to. General John Jumper is on the record as being frustrated that political clearance was not granted to attack the most troublesome early warning radars in for example Montenegro. Civilian radars off the target list were also free to remain active and be utilised by the military. Even with those advantages in 78 days only two manned NATO aircraft were shot down.

BOZ is I believe a Swedish pod. Part of the BO Family. The new pod is believed to be a BOZ pod containing an advanced infra-red countermeasures system by Terma. The vents on the modified pod generate a distinct howl. The following video has the ‘howl’ from the 0:32 point. The other pod is Sky Shadow.

Thats quite surprising, I thought the US would have kept the aircraft flying for DACT purposes at least, stuck it in a museum somewhere or still kept it in one capacity or another.

The aircraft still belonged to the Soviet Union. A Soviet MiG-29 defection to Turkey was also returned in 1989 (The pilot got asylum in the U.S.). Cuban MiGs that ended up in the U.S. were also returned.

Sometimes we do actually see operation use during the airshow but as you can understand there is no info given out only that a sceduled departure will interupt the show for a few minutes. Nobody minds at all really.

I have a feeling that F3’s will be there. Perhaps as part of the role demo.:)

No Role Demo at any UK airshow this year. It was announced back in January.

I wonder who that quick-thinking Met Man was?

How did it get there? Via Antarctica…..or somewhere not so chilly? 😉

Although there has been nothing officially from UK source there has been from Chile.

The then head of the Chilean Air Force, General Fernano Matthei, has revealed the following in TV interview.

“RAF C-130 with electronic intelligence equipment flew from the Pacific via Easter Island disgused as Chilean Air Force aircraft. This was done on the premise they had to fly between internal destinations within Chile collecting intelligence. The aircraft were noted by the misspelling of the Fuerza Area de Chile.”

Chilean Liason Officer: “RAF Nimrod electronic warfare aircraft operated from the remote San Felix island in the Pacific.”
