The airfield will remain open during the show as it’s a live airfield in it’s own right.

The Spitfire from the BBMF will perform flybys on the Sunday, we also had the Dakota booked but it seems to have become ill again!

We also have two aircraft from the Army Historic Flight although we are unsure if they will allowed to carry out a flyby.

We are trying to book aircraft for a static display, even though the dear old CAA will still charge for them!

Come on chaps give us some support, we are trying our best to have a flying content to the show, even though it’s an uphill struggle!

I can confirm that Bunsen Honeydew doesn’t work for the HMVA, nobody does. The Essex HMVA is a Charity Incorporated Organisation run solely by volunteers, not for profit and for the love of the hobby.

On behalf of the Essex HMVA I would once again like to invite all cockpit owners and exhibitors to attend the Military and Flying Machines show to be held at Damyns Hall aerodrome on 6th-7th August 2016.

If you would care to scroll back on this post you will see what the event is all about and the type of show we try to organise.

Sadly like many small airshows the CAA have killed off the air display part of the show. As a charity we simply cannot afford the enormous costs now involved in organising a small airshow, the final nail in the coffin being the CAA’s insistence on passing over all liability for the show to Flight Display Directors and airshow organisers personally.

We are striving to make this our Tenth Anniversary show the best ever and would welcome any cockpit owners or aeronautical exhibitors to our show.

Please give some consideration to attending, we can promise you a warm welcome!

I’m sure it won’t have escaped the attention of the business side of Duxford that their policy of only accepting pre-booked tickets was awry, certainly to turn down paying customers on the day is financial suicide!

I can understand why organisers would like the guaranteed income that pre-booking allows but they could easily allow for those who for whatever reason turn up as paying customers on the day. I’m sure Flying Legends will sell out although how many other DX shows will?

Duxford will continue as will the other big commercial shows, what concerns me though is the almost insurmountable problems that organisers of smaller and less commercial airshows face

Thanks for all the input chaps.

The post by Wyvernfan worries me as it mentions road closures and safe areas. Post Shoreham the emphasis is on protecting members of the public outside of the airfield, this and the hugely increased costs will I fear be a death knell for most small airshows and fly-ins as most simply don’t have the money to implement the draconian measures currently being imposed by the CAA.

My earnest wish is that things can return to a more even keel and a common sense approach will be adopted by the CAA, I fear however that this is just wishful thinking. The CAA are using the Shoreham incident to pretty much ban airshows, that way they can’t be held accountable. They are also passing the financial risks straight onto Flight Display Directors, again passing the buck. The enormous increase in costs is just to cover their expenses yet with no air shows to police they should make a nice profit!

was the american air show an all ticket affair then? if so that perhaps that would explain the low attendance?

As lovely as it would be to see the iconic Canberra once again fly I fear that it won’t become reality.

Even after the AAIB report into the Shoreham crash is published (and I’m sure we all know what the conclusions will be) there will be no let up in CAA approach to airshows.

For whatever reason the CAA are now viewing the airshow as a thing to be taxed out of existence. In a small way I help to organise a small airshow of around 10-12 aircraft, CAA approval cost circa £2,000 for 2015. The proposed charges for 2016? £25,000, although this has now been phased in over the next three years it will still be implemented. They even want to charge for aircraft on the airfield that don’t even take part in the display. Want to fly slightly lower? then the costs start to increase, how on earth is that aiding safety? Sad to day I would suggest we all go to as many airshows as we can this year for the simple reason that they simply won’t exist very soon. I would love to be proved wrong but don’t think I will be.

Bunsen Honeydew- you’re right to highlight the second part of the EU directive on deactivated weapons, if this piece of legislation is agreed and rubber stamped in the quite disgraceful way the first part was by UNELECTED bureaucrats in Brussels then there will be no “weapons platforms” allowed. The term applies as equally to a Canberra as it does a Sherman tank!

The Duxford airshows will continue as will the other large commercial shows. In much the same way that Gatwick and Heathrow are allowed to operate a solution will be found. Sadly this will affect the entrance prices and make such events even harder for the average air enthusiast to attend. This will lead to a decline in interest and hey presto! problem solved.

That is of course unless the second part of the EU legislation for deactivated weapons is rubber stamped into law by faceless unelected bureaucrats in Brussels. Not only will there be no deactivated weapons of any kind or anything that even looks like a weapon but also no weapons platforms. No flying ex-warbirds full stop.

Off now to make a cup of tea, I have of course filled in an Action Plan and Risk Assessment

OOOPS! Yes you’re quite correct Consul! late night at the keyboard! I hope folks who don’t already know read the post.

Trumper yes you are quite correct, the flightline now has to be 230 yards from the crowdline therefore taking it outside of many airfield boundaries and over local roads. Due to CAA edicts these will probably need to be closed, you wont believe how hard that is and how much Councils’ want just to say yes. You then have to employ a Traffic Management company approved by the Council to police it during hours of operation. You really will get a better view outside of the airfield except the airshow cannot take place as there are people outside of the airfield who might be at risk.

Refuse lorries crash into Christmas shoppers, Police helicopters run out of fuel and crash into pubs, and sadly every day there are accidents on our roads yet none of these modes of transport are banned. Just what is the secret remit behind the draconian measures being implemented by the CAA?

Is it really just a*se covering, and / or a blatant way of hiking prices? if so simple economics dictate that not many airshows will take place with the CAA increasing prices by 1000%

Fly.Buy is absolutely right the airshow scene is sadly finished, I guesstimate 80% of airshows/fly-ins will never take place again.

As somebody who is currently trying in a small capacity to arrange a small airshow I can tell you the problems are proving next to impossible. Sadly the only airshows that will survive will be the major commercial ones.

I think the CAA would rather everybody just forgot the whole thing, everybody has their head buried in the sand and nobody will make any sort of decision. Read the Facebook post by Peter Tallichet for an informed opinion.

The only way the whole thing can be averted is if somebody forces a Judicial Review, that’s the only way the CAA can be forced to stop exterminating the entire industry/ hobby

Is there anybody else who would like to join us for the Military and Flying Machines Show on 8th -9th of August?

The airfield will be marked out this weekend and whilst there is plenty of room should anybody else like to attend if I know I can make provision for them with the Cockpiteers already booked in.

This show will be our biggest and hopefully best so far, we have 70+ re-enactment groups and 300+ military vehicles booked in, a two hour flying display and two evenings’ free entertainment. Can I tempt any more Cockpiteers to attend?

B17-man that’s a shame, I’ve seen photographs of your project and it looks stunning. It would have created a lot of interest at the show, especially as we have Sally B performing on the Sunday.

Perhaps you would consider joining us next year? The show will be the second weekend in August as this year.

Time Marches On as they say and with this in mind is there anybody else who fancies joining us for the Military and Flying Machines show this year?

The site is starting to be planned out now and we are taking daily bookings for re-enactment groups, vehicles, etc etc. There is plenty of space for as many people who would like to come and there is no time limit, but is there anybody else who will at least express an interest in exhibiting?

As soon as I know I can plan that part of the display field and make sure that all of the cockpit owners owners are sited together in a nice spot on the airfield.

The Essex HMVA are happy to reimburse cockpit owners for their fuel costs to and from the show, and would welcome anybody who would like to exhibit.

So come on chaps who’s up for a new experience? All being well the weather will be on our side as well!

The Essex HMVA is delighted to confirm that the Huey helicopter will be displaying on both days of The Military and Flying Machines show. The Huey always gives an awesome display and is always a very popular item in the varied air display.

Additionally on Sunday 9th of August we’re delighted to say that Boeing B.17 Sally B will be taking part in the air display, well worth the trip out just to see her display. In addition to the BBMF Spitfire and Hurricane on the Sunday we also have the Kent Spitfire displaying on both days. There are of course other aircraft to be confirmed so it should be quite an airshow.

If you would care to join in the fun by displaying, or if you need more information please feel free to drop me a line. Don’t forget that as exhibitors entry to the show will be free
