I have to say I did smile at the time, It was only a month after it came back on line from a major repair which took 8 months to do including re sparing the wings & carry through beams! so I saw a very sheepish pilot when I arrived there! there was some noticeable squirming going on I can tell you. 😀

The flying shot was taken about half an hour before the landing incident.
    When….19th May 1996 at 16.35
Why…… Seat to stick interface failure,
There was no fault with the aircraft systems.
We repaired it & it test flew 27th July 1996 at 14.15

Hi Eddie, There is both mechanical or hydraulic & a light. the lever turns the lock assembly via a cable & chain this releases the gear to free fall. The last few degrees movement of the gear selector then lets the hydraulic pump push the gear into the down locks, while the gear is in transit there is a telltale window on the selector that will show ‘down’ the system works at around 300 psi but when the gear is in the locks the jacks are still pumping & the system stalls at around 1200 psi this then pushes a shuttle valve in the selector & also shows ‘idle’ in the telltale window. When I got to the aircraft I looked in the cockpit & saw the telltale was still in ‘down’ this then told me that the lever had not been pushed all the way to where it should have been! Also, bear in mind that the pump is run off the end of the engine cam shaft & that the engine RPM is quite low on the landing approach.
I hope this explains it OK.

Trust me, it’s a lot less than that sometimes!
