Quite honestly after all this time (12years) it has no value, lessons were learned.

Do you know any contact details fro Rolls Royce so i could try them for references?

What would you like to know? I’m working for RR on the 19 & 14 so maybe I can help?

I remember attending on that had the engine stop on takeoff at Wroughton around 1990, It could have been at the PFA Rally of that year, thankfully the pilot was OK but the airframe looked the worse for wear! seemed a nice little aeroplane.

    Hi Guys,
I must have missed all the bad stuff, I’m inclined to agree if it starts getting personal, pull the plug, but otherwise keep it going. Please remember that the whole world can see these words so we should keep it sensible!

The watch word here should be ‘Never assume!’ however, a good record of work & items replaced should be kept as it is not uncommon for some ‘over haulers’ to asset strip a good engine & replace the good with not so good. Some years ago an engine was sent to the States for an inspection as the engine which had test hours only on it had sat in a crate for many years & had minimum paperwork so, off it went, It came back looking very good with all the right bits of paper so it was put in the aircraft where it flew for around 160 hours then it broke with metal in the filters big time! so the engine was stripped & lots of wear was found to the extent that the case hardening on some of the gears was almost worn through! after 160 odd hours? I don’t think so but how do you prove it?
A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of unpacking an inhibited Merlin from it’s packing case & then disassembling it into large bits to help the overhaul shop that was going to strip & re build to check everything, once the 50 odd years of muck was cleaned off the paint looked rough but on removing the cam covers & cleaning up the rocker gear & cams it looked new As was the rest of the engine, I think the bearings were replaced as a caution & apart from new gaskets & seals the engine went back together & has run beautifully! But they must be checked!

Just to say I met Glen yesterday at a location ‘somewhere in the UK’ from what he told me he seems quite serious about these aircraft & is spending some serious funds on them! Good luck to him, I hope he gets them back in the air!

What’s the gen out there? Is this a genuine and feasible project?

    Hi Steve,
    Built 1941 JUNKERS JU87/R4 S/N 6234
    It was registered 19/12/03
    to Glen Lacey
    Epsom

    (via G-INFO UK)

(edit:- but you knew that, had I looked at the shortcut! Dhu!)

Don’t hold your breath for this one, I doubt its up to much!

I have to laugh at this, there is probably about the same amount of radiation in your wrist watch’s luminous markings as there is in the instruments of a warbird!

Generaly most recent incidents have been at public shows where there is a glut of video, people who saw it, expert witnesses etc, when you see film of the departure you can generally tell if something fell off or broke mechanically prior to the crash, If you see a manoeuvre that is obviously not safe or right then really the official report is only going to confirm what you saw & knew.
The Chinook crash was nothing like an airshow crash, The ministry operate to much different procedures from civilians, as far as I know there were no eye witnesses or video etc & it was a ministry investigation held behind closed doors until the result was decided.
Please don’t think I am looking to blame every crash on the pilots, I’m not but there has to be a responsibility for what happens, after all if it is known to be a mechanical failure should we not look to checking others of the same type for the same defect? So why should we not want to help other pilots not to do what others have done? I have lost several very close friends in very well known crashes, but, had they walked away from the crash, or had they watched someone else have the same crash they would have been the first to admit they screwed up & would have learnt from it, they were that kind of people, human!

    David,
I think there is a slight over reaction to my post, of course I’m not suggesting that we should go round to someone’s widow and tell her that we are disgusted her husband crashed it? all I am saying is that when a pilot takes unnecessary risks there are more people involved than just himself, After all who is the crash down to If there is nothing mechanical found wrong with the aircraft? or do we put it down to medical problems?
If someone drives his car into yours on the motorway without looking is that OK in your book? I doubt it Or, If your son drove off the road at night in your car & there was nothing found wrong with the car after an investigation would you be fine with that? Any normal folks would be angry at either of those scenarios, so why the ‘don’t blame the pilot’ If nothing was found wrong with the aeroplane? I just don’t see it!
