Many thanks John, I will look into this
Martin
She is almost complete internally although I have not made much progress over the past year due to a Spitfire Memorial project. XV148 remains in the dry, the flight deck can be powered up and she awaits seats to be refurbished, outside repainted and a few small items to be installed.
XV148 Nimrod
Hi, here are a few images taken over the last few months (and one from when i started), still plenty to do but getting there, regards Martin
XV148
XV148 fuselage was scrapped at Woodford and the nose is with me. Now ‘live’ with electrics, she is gradually coming to life again and receiving lots of TLC.
DC8 Lyneham
I also live near Malmesbury/Lyneham and this DC8 always flys on a Saturday around lunchtime and also now during the week as it has just flown over (13:00). It makes a real loud noise and plenty of smoke!!
Nimrod survivors
Hi, just read the Nimrod string, great reading, especially the 237 pics on the dump. I have XV148 since 1999 and spent lots of time and money on trying to bring her to life. Recently had some of the electric up and running, first time since 1982. I am always on the lookout for parts etc, if anybody can help I would appreciate this. Regards Martin (XV148)
XV148 Nimrod restoration
Still progressing, but slowly due to house moves and work. Sourcing parts to enable next stage in the flight deck. Hope to paint strip this year and begin some real progress on the rebuild.
Regards, Martin Painter
Are you sure it was a Comet ? The only forward RAF section I can think of is the one at the DH Musuem. Very interested to find out more.
when I photographed for my book on the Comet by Air Britain back in 1998, she was looking very good and I was very impressed at the condition. I know that exposed to the elements, certain areas become a danger, landing gear being one of these.
sorry guys for the out of date list as my site needs updating. The changes are that G-APMB was indeed scrapped several months ago (very sad, all gone) and XV147 (penultimate Comet) was scrapped last year in early 2003. My nose section XV148 (last Comet) is now just up the road from Lyneham in Wiltshire. To lose this Comet 2 would be crimnal as it is the only Comet 2 surviving.
Many thanks for this although I was hoping that the scrappy would realize the value of such an aeroplane. This aircraft conducted the very first jet service for BEA and also was exhibited at Farnborough, it deserved more. There were several items that were key in the nose section ie rudder pedals and several brackets which are not available anywhere else especially not at B&Q !!
Look forward to seeing your sad images, thanks again
Martin
I have information that both were scrapped in late June. Trying to gain some more on this. I needed several parts from APMB for my restoration of the Prototype Nimrod.
I was there stayng at RAF Hal Far with the ATC during the last year the RAF where there in 1977. There were tons of DC3s and stuff there then, have some parts somewhere!! Also we did some tours around a burnt Victor, does anyone know which Victor this might be ?
