A great project.
This might be old news to people on here but there is also this going on:

= Another project to get a Typhoon in the air. We are all crossing our fingers, toes, and wishing everyone well in these I’m sure? The last of these istalking about 2024, for the 80th anniversary of D-day. So that is 6 years, nine months and twenty two days and counting! Approximately?

Piston,

I’ll leave no stone unturned! I believe the Napier Engine archives became part of Rolls Royce, but will follow up with this route too. Apparently (other than cost) it is not a big deal to have a new carb built, so who knows what else will turn up as far as data is concerned!

I’ll donate a fiver or two if it helps get a Napier Sabre-powered Typhoon in the air, if that helps? :applause:Yes I know, itwill take rather more than £10! but it is just a thought…I’m in Lincolnshire so could stick the tenner through the letterbox if Napier are near here!

Quite probably the man who knew about these matters; Eric Brown, should have the last word on this subject. It appears that he didn’t think much of the Mustang, tho’ which mark I do not know.

He did tho’ I understand, rate the Spitfire Mk X1V as the best.

He also considers the Tempest mkV as the best WW2 fighter below 20,000ft, the fighter the Me262 pilots feared most.
I’ve gota thing about the Typhoon and Tempest, people might notice? My uncle was a Tempest 2 pilot and loved it.Painted by Neil Higgs of Soaring Scenes:

Thanks all for your very informative replies. I should have realised a Tempest restoration wouldnot be as simple as raiding other Hawkers! Never mind I guess I’ll just have to wait a lot more years before these chin-nosed beasts are flying around again!!with or without rockets!

Hi
My vote would go to the typhoon, as a fighter well over rated , and yes I am a tiffie fan, but the tails fell off, and the only good bit was the engine , which frequently stopped, and many good pilots were lost in tiffies.
It’s main claim to fame was the fact it was fast and could catch a 190, now a 190 I would never claim over rated, and I am not a fan of it, But after all didn’t the RAF develop the tiffie into a 190 copy , ( the tempest ) and then further refine it into a fury.
Just my opinion.
I was told once by a spitfire pilot, that the Mk V was a very nice plane & the IX was nice also, but all those that came after were beasts to fly.
Cheers
Jerry

The Typhoon!! This is sacrilege!Yes, it was pretty lousyas an interceptor, pilots passed out and the tails fell off, but otherwise it was immensely strong, able to take huge punishment, well-armed and devastating in attack. Plus it led to the best fighter of WW2,:love-struck: the Tempest. The Tempest, the allied fighter that the Me262 pilots feared the most. If only one of these was still flying, I’d be extremely happy.

How can the Whirlwind be underrated if it had such a short career?
Simply: Did it do more damage to the Germans than it cost to develop, produce and operate?

The reasons for its failure (i.e. blame the engine) are irrelevant….if it didn’t perform (period, no excuses allowed this isn’t like modern schools) it can’t be under-rated.
It can be termed “promising” but beset by technical issues…like many other aircraft or those too late to see extensive service.
If we give it credit for potential, we might as well call the Warwick or Typhoon (as an interceptor) a “world beater”….not to mention every axis “paper airplane” those books with computer illustrations of flame-spewing Germans are filled with.
“If the war had lasted for another 15 minutes…”. :).

I vote for the Hellcat….it did great work in the Pacific carrier war in support of the “island hopping” campaign to push back Japanese expansion in the Pacific(which UK fans tend to forget even happened since the RN wasn’t the major player in it :)).
Likewise, the P-40 family is rarely mentioned as one of the “greats” like the Spitfire and Mustang. But because it wasn’t in the BoB and 8th AF FC, it’s overlooked. A workhorse on par with the Hurricane or A6M series.

My understanding was that, on those occasions that the engine did.’t fail, it proved hugely wffective, fast and manouevreable?

Question for you technical-savvy people: There are several Sea Furries still flying. Is that not close enough to the Tempest and therefore the Typhoon to be raided for missing parts?

Another vote for the Westland Whirlwind, A shame about the engine holding it back. What about the Chance Vought Corsair. Any plane the Japanese nicknamed Whistling death has to be worthy of repect!Fast/powerful and well-armed?

I understand that the Veldpris museum in Holland is rebuilding a Typhoon to airworthy status and are scouring the fields of Europe for missing parts. I suppose there must be a lot of debris scattered around northen France? It would be fantastic news if either of these projects are completed. the BBMF could do with the addition of a Typhoon or Tempest!
