Pink clouds for Boeings biggest future hope… Il liked your first contribution a lot better. It was real.
Be selective! Probably not all pics will qualify as “most beautiful”, will they?
Here’s another of my absolute favourites:

If you check the Czech ranking thread you will find out that there’s actually plenty of respect for this little fighter all around. It just seems that quite a few American readers don’t really like it that much, but this might be because they perceive it as a competition to their good old F-16. In their own way they are also showing respect…. 😀
I don’t thik they were in port. Id’ assume they were refueling from a tank ship. This must have happend in international waters. It would have been highly critical to defend the carrier with air defence missiles. After all the Russians have the right to fly over international water and take pictures. If they are not intercepted in time, that’s tough luck for the US- Navy.
Well, this is not about claiming ownership of pics. As long as no copyrights are being violated, there can’t be anything wrong with showing pics. I didn’t take the first one myself either.
You’re probably right there. Good observation.
Thanx! I especially like the Mig 27 top view over the desert. The camouflage is fitting there.
Suggestion: Just post your favourite one.

Guns are much less important than they used to be, but they still have a wide range of secondary and backup uses. I understand that there was at least one Tornado strafing gun attack in Iraq earlier this year.

Especially for the air policing role a gun is almost a necessity. How can you fire a warning shot with a IR- missile, for example? Once the interceptor is in very short range (to identify an intruder and give optical signals) the gun still is the most effective weapon in case the intruder doesn’t comply.
Never heard of “the chocolate war”, even though I’m Swiss and chocolate is a topic here, sort of…
🙁
😉
We will soon find out. It’s a political decision in the end, and if the Americans manage to come up with enough incentives and threats, the Czech government -like the Polish- might still go for the F-16.
It would just be so sad for SAAB if they lost time again because of political considerations. The Gripen seems to be a fine little plane.

It’s interesting to see the F-16 is lobbied so openly.
One would think that behind closed door lobbying would be more effective.
The way it is most Czechs will feel that their expert commitee’s evaluation decision is wiped asside by the Americans as incompetent. I wouldn’t be suprised if this raised anti- American feelings there.
It also seems that the US- admin. take this tiny sell quite seriously. They might fear that the Czech’s decision might encourage other nations with far more purchasing power to opt for the Gripen.
By making it a political issue the US- administration also demonstrates that they don’t want to leave the arms trade to free market. (Or is it more: free market please, as long as you buy our products?)
We probably all suffer from schizophrania a little bit. 😀 😉
They are a nice sight, but if there’s no use for them, they are expensive toys, sort of. The question of usefullness is clearly not asked frequently enough. Take Switzerland, my own country: We’re about to select a replacement for our F-5 E/Fs and Mirage III RS.
With 33 F/A-18 we do already have a modern multi role fighter. A full grown war in Central Western Europe seems highly unlikely. So why do we need another plane? Probably mostly to be a little less dependent on Boeing and the US…

I should also point out here that France has offered Rafales to Austria at a cost 15% more expensive than the Typhoon.
Where did you get this from? As far as I remember Dassault came in after the decision for the EF was made and offered the package for 400 Mio. less.
(This of course doesn’t mean much since the offer was made after the decision more to annoy the Austrians and for marketing purposes, but they surely didn’t offer it more expensive than the EF…)
