OK- I’d consider a couple of blackhawks a rather luxourious replacement for alouettes, gazelles and dauphins.
But why not ask for a little more….;) πŸ˜€

Great. I like the Brazilian 30- year anniversary paintjob a lot better than the Swiss golden Mirage IIIs. Not very imaginative, indeed.
The black nose just looks cool.

The telegraph exagerated quite a bit, obviously. British defense is still second to none in Europe. Plus you’re living on an island, remember?
I would understand you guys a little better if you were from Germany or Italy. They are downsizing everywhere around. “You ain’t have seen nothing yet!”

    Stop lamenting.
At least he didn’t alienate the US. Uncle Sam can take care of your little problems now.:D πŸ˜€
(I wouldn’t count on him for the Falklands though, enough problems elsewhere)

It could go either way. Poland was willingly taking old F-16, other Eastern European countries seem to prefer new small planes like the Gripen. I’m sure MIG can get a couple of these customers.
They already tried with the Mig-29 in Austria, but prejudice and concerns about high maintenance costs were hard to overcome there. (I followed the discussion in an Austrian forum).
I think they will have a much bigger chance with a new smaller modell in countries a little further East.
In Latin America, Russia seems to have made a small break through with the Mig-29 in Peru and now likely the Su-35 in Brazil. This will make it a lot easier for other planes to get picked by other LA countries, too, especially inexpensive ones.
You seem to agree that in countries like Brazil, India, Iran or Ukraine, it stands a chance for orders in decent numbers.

All in all I suspect the small Mig has actually higher chances than an expensive Pak-fa. There’s only very few countries that are elegible for that sort of a plane.

What would it have to compete against?
Interestingly there’s no real US made plane of its size in the pipeline. F-35 is going to be bigger and a lot more expensive.
F-16 will still be around and cheap in ten years (apart from the last couple of models sold to Greece, Israel and UAE), it’s certainly a rival, if ageing.
Gripen- should be a little more expensive.
The T-50 will be around, mostly in SE Asian market, I suppose.
The bigest new rivals will probably come from India and China.

Well, Macedonia was traditionally part of Yugoslavia (You can’t seriously call their independent years a tradition yet), and they were certainly well furnished.
Albania’s whole defence used to be a nut case, certainly with those 100000 little bunkers spread all over the country. The air force looked rather rational in comparison.

Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia all chose to continue at least air policing by themselves. Most of these will be in need of a replacement within ten years.
It just depends on whether the other countries we mentioned (also including Slovenia, and Croatia, by the way) choose doing it likewise or go “the Baltic way”. Look at Slovenia: They can’t afford jet airplanes yet, but they sure bought some PC-9s as trainers and bridgegaps.
I consider most of them too proud to delegate this task. So sooner or later they will need to replace all these ageing Fishbeds or whatever they have left. They are likely to procur an inexpensive, small model since they don’t need range.

I trust at least the design ideas will continue somehow. There are going to be big mergers in the Russian airplane industry, no doubt, but as long as there are indications of profit, they will continue the design.
I also doubt that the mig label will just vanish. It’s well established and somehow “cult”, isn’t it?

I doubt Hungary will acqcuire Russian aircraft – they’ve just gone Gripen.

Bulgaria – a possibility but they A.) Are joining NATO and B.) Probably won’t buy Russian following the MiG-29 overhaul debacle which has probably drained the last of their goodwill.

Slovakia – Have no idea to tell you the truth

    Albania – lol!

Ukraine – a possbility for larger numbers if they ever get enough funding

Macedonia – Unlikely – don’t they want to get rid of Su-25’s and concentrate on helo ops?

Serbia – yeah a possibility for small numbers of a/c (24?)

Bolivia – lol – yes they will replace T-33 with 5th generation fighters

    Brazil – yes a possibility

Colombia – unlikely – concentration on helo ops and COIN against nasty drug peddling guerillas

Mexico – 12 a/c at most to replace F-5 – this is unlikely too given Mexico’s proximity to the USA and availability of cheap F-16’s.

Two things: We’re not talking about a fifth generation fighter here, rather a cheap late fourth generation one engine point defence sort ot thing. Even “economic basket cases” (they are certainly not a majority on my list as you are implying) might prefer an inexpensive new plane. Countries like S&M, Macedonia and Albania take great pride in their armed forces. They traditionally had quite a big fleet of fighter planes. They might also realize that a new acquisition would be cheaper on the long run than hand downs of various models that require expensive upgrades, logistics, spares and maintenance.
Second: keep the time lapse in mind! We’re talking about eight- ten years from now and more. Some of these “economic basket cases” are likely to experience economic growth in the near future with the EU eastward expansion. They might not be able to opt for either medium or large size models or fifth generation, but a small, inexpensive Mig could be affordable by then. That’s all they need for air policing and self defence.

Indeed! It was recommended to have a salt shaker next to the monitor. Which one did you like best?

I personally preferred the announcement that Brazil is about to chose the F-16, simply because everybody seems to have taken it for true. πŸ˜€

    But maybe it is true?

“Surprisingly” a few weeks ago the US joint chief of Staff, Gen. Richard Myers came here and had meeting with the Brazilian AF Commander in chief, the Minister of Defense. So, letΒ΄s wait.

That’s the way to go. We can certainly learn from eachother, compromise on some issues, cooperate.
This will be far more profitable than returning to a cold war- like relationship. If the US wants to produce the F-22 and spend all that money on it, go ahead, but spare the world from another arms race by legitimizing it with a alleged “Chinese threat”.
