Unsuccessful ATF proposals.
F-35A-1 takes off!!!! (on a crane 😉 ) The pic is too big to post http://www.jsf.mil/gallery/gal_photo_sdd_f35manf.htm#13JAN06
Actually, wouldn’t it be F-35As that the RAF might procure as Tornado GR4 replacements, or apart from naval equipment, is there no difference between the F-35A & C?
There are lots of structural differences between the three JSF variants, the commonality of the design mainly comes from shared avionics and equipment and manufacturing all three variants on the same machines and production line. http://www.jsf.mil/f35/f35_technology.htm
This is what the USN would have been flying if money wasn’t a problem.

I guess this could provide a rapid intelligence, reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition role too.

Write a letter to the MoD :p Seriously there’s nothing we can do about it – it’s still going to fulfill its primary role, so I don’t think the situation is not that bad.
You should know that defence spending is about as popular in the UK as mandatory recycling. No political party has a platform to increase the GDP-ratio, so what’s the point in quibbling over the new escorts’ capabilities at this point? If the extra cost in fitting them out had been that negligable I’m sure that it would have been done anyway.
No offence, Steve, but if you’re privy to some information over the building of the T-45s that we’re not that would prove the government was saving pennies then I’m sure we’d like to see it.
???? I’m just sharing my views on the T45, that’s what a forums for isn’t it?
I’m sure the T45 will be perfectly adequate in most situations but I think it’s a shame that it’s just a T42 with new weapon systems, equipment and reduce crew levels.
So,
1. how many ships with a 155mm gun do you know?
2. you do realize Type 45 main prupose is AAW, not land attack (for which a derivative may be used)
3. how many ships of this type and size with 4 ciws do you know? What do the extra 2 add over and above the 2 presently envisioned?
4. do you realize that if a hangar can fit one EH 101 Merlin, it probably is large enough for 2 Lynx helicopters. (Given a choice between 2 Lynx and 1 Merlin, I’ld go for 1 Merlin.)
5. So long as it can put its missiles on target better than the opposition, 48 SAM is fine (the following classes all mount “just” 48 SAMs: IN Delhi, FRS Sovremenny, PLAN Types 52B, 52C and 51C)
6. You forgot to mention 2×4 Harpoon SSM
1. 155mm is the future so why spend money on further 4.5inch development? Tests have already been done on a Mk8 Mod 1 gun mount modified with a 39 calibre 155mm L31 barrel.
2. There is no place in the RN for ships that can only do one role well any more.
3. T45’s 2x CIWS cover one side of the ship each with a 180 degree fields of fire which is a bad design feature in my opinion, there should be CIWS on top of the hangar and bridge too with 270 degree fields of fire that can protect both sides of the ship. CIWS might have anti-surface and anti-torpedo roles in the future.
4. Maybe you could fit 2x Lynx in a Merlin hangar but it would have been far better to build a bigger hangar in the first place.
5. 48x SAMs is fine until someone starts launching 49x missiles at you 😉 Having extra silos doesn’t mean you have to buy extra missiles to go in them, you can leave them empty until you need them.
6. The T45 should have had enough firepower from a 155mm gun firing smart shells and missiles in it’s extra silos to not need Harpoon canisters as a option.
I believe that there is some scope for additional features on the Darings after they’ve been completed. Of course they could have had all those things, but they were always going to be primarily an AAW platform. Plus I’d like to know who would have built the T-45s to your specifications for a lower price. Horizon has the same number of Asters too.
Steel work is supposed to be the cheapest part of building a warship, a bigger hangar and more missile silos would have been worth the extra investment. Money could still have been saved by delaying the purchase of the extra missiles.
The T45 might be advanced but it’s definitely poorly armed.
1x 4.5inch gun, 48x SAM silos, 2x 20mm Phalanx, 2x 30mm cannon, a few torpedos and a single Lynx or Merlin helicopter.
I’m not impressed 🙁
The T45 is another typical UK MOD project where too much money has been spent on too little capability.
The T45 should have had this armament
1x 155mm gun, 96x silos for SAMs and land attack missiles, 4x CIWS and facilities for 2x helicopters.

This is interesting
Fusion of sensor data from three sensors provides reliable autonomous navigation. The sensors package include IBN (Image Based Navigation), TRN (Terrain Reference Navigation) and MIL-GPS (Global Positioning System) subsystems. The use of such fusion enables the Taurus KEPD 350 to navigate over long distances without GPS support.
Does not even Israel offer something similar? MSOV

It looks similar but that’s a unpowered glider dispenser, I guess it could quite easily be turned into a powered cruise missile though.
