I read that one. I was a little disappointed, it seems like it’s been written solely to get adapted into a movie since Jack Ryan is a lot younger. It was a decent read, but would have been much better off as the first book, not the most recent. You have a good idea how a lot of things are going to end up, anyway.
I think you have got ”The Bear and The Dragon” mixed up with ”Red Rabbit”.
”Red Rabbit” is set between ”Patriot Games” and ”The Hunt for Red October” according to http://www.clancyfaq.com/ryanverse.htm and is about a plot to assassinate the Pope, John Paul II.
”The Bear and The Dragon” is set after ”Rainbow Six” and is about Russia and China.
I’m currently re-reading Clancy’s ”Without Remorse” which tells us the John Clark story. Excellent revenge thriller, 10/10 🙂

When it first entered service in 1993(?) the FA2 Sea Harrier’s Blue Vixen radar and AMRAAM missiles did make it the most capable BVR fighter in Europe.
The FA2 is being retired early to save money 🙁 The GR9 will replace it, but it will not be upgraded to radar equipped AV-8B+ standard to save money 🙁
Salute to the Sea Harrier thread 🙂 http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=46257&highlight=Sea+Harrier

I recently read ”Rendezvous with Rama” by Arthur C. Clarke. It’s a interesting and intelligent sci-fi about the first human contact with a alien race, very good 8/10.

Let’s face it…FEMA (and probably the state and local officials) blew it. Anyone who thinks it was planned has been hanging with Oliver Stone too long.
I agree, these are the authorities that should have planned for this situation. They have known about the dangers for years and they should have been prepared.

Steve, that ship reminds me of the Maeresk S ship proposal
Is this what you mean? (Ja, I think you posted this before?) http://www.rusi.org/downloads/pub_rds/Carmel.pdf
It’s a lot quicker and easier for a small group of people to climb into a hovercraft than it is for a helicopter to winch up the same number. Hovercraft like the Griffon 380TD and Griffon 470TD could have quickly shuttled stranded people to safe ground. http://www.griffonhovercraft.com/specs.html
I think the LCAC hovercraft would have been too big to operate in built up areas and I doubt if the water was deep enough for LCU’s.
It’s a shame the local authorites didn’t invest in small rescue hovercraft, they could have made a real difference and are far more efficent than helicopters 🙁
