These Boeing mini fighters have a family resemblance to the CALF and MRF studies.
Check out the 747 mini fighter mothership, I wonder if Air Force 1 carries any 😉

This Arsenal ship concept has a interchangable midbody, I like the idea of fitting a 16” Iowa class turret to one of these midbody modules and deploying it as needed.

I haven’t read it myself yet, but Richard Herman’s ”The Warbirds” is about a F-4 fighter wing and its highly rated. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0380708388/qid=1114444288/sr=1-11/ref=sr_1_0_11/202-0968521-5743849
Great story, I agree, but Pearson (in my opinion) needs to work on his dialogue. It sounds straight from a comic book at times.
Simon Pearson’s and Humphrey Hawkesley’s books are more ‘future history prediction’ than straight fiction so the characterization suffers a bit.
Haven’t read ”Nimitz class” for a while but it does sound possible, I think the Kilo’s have low speed manoeuvring motors which would help.
Maybe it looked a bit like this McDonnell Douglas / British Aerospace / Northrop Grumman team JSF concept? http://www.jsf.mil/gallery/gal_photo_cddr_mda-ngc-bae.htm
I recently read ”No Escape Zone” by Nick Richardson, whose Sea Harrier was shot down over Gorazde on 16th April 1994.
Its a good account of the events before, during and after the shoot down, and it has some very good Sea Harrier passages in which the limitations of the FRS1 are made clear.
A good read. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0751531022/qid=1114435933/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_10_1/026-6247697-3818024
WOW! those fuel tanks need replacing with seaplane floats 🙂
CALF=Common Affordable Lightweight Fighter
I always liked the sound of this program, especially the ”Affordable” and ”Lightweight” part. I think it would have made a better Harrier replacement than the JSF.
