If these fighters were in service I would have thought that bigger tanker aircraft would have been needed to keep enough of them in the air, maybe the KC-747 would have got into service.

Remember the proposals for Arsenal ships?
Modern day battleships with 500+ vertical launch missile silos.

I think the new Russian amphibious class is very interesting.
Any pics, info or links for it?
🙂 Snowbirds with the Red Arrows.
Good article, heres the Red Arrows website http://www.raf.mod.uk/reds/index.html
Well done Crusader, I have been looking for pics of that Iowa class proposal for ages.
I guess New Zealand could get some Hawk Mk 127 LIFTs like the Royal Australian Air Force is getting.
Its probably not the cheapest or most capable option but it would offer a useful light combat capability and be a ideal stepping stone if New Zealand did have to get back into the business of operating frontline fast jets.

Ja Worsley,
CVN 77 is going to be the USS George H.W. Bush and is planned to be the 10th and final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. http://www.nn.northropgrumman.com/bush/index.html
This evolutionary ship will pave the way to a new class of carriers, the CVN 21 (CVN 78) design. http://www.nn.northropgrumman.com/products/carriers/currentprojects/CVN78.stm

Is it me or is the DD(X) starting to look like a Imperial Star Destroyer out of Star Wars:)

Getting off topic, but a question to steveO….regarding the book A History of Aircraft Carrying Submarines by Terry C. Treadwell. What are the illustrations like in the book…especially 1960-2005 concepts??
There are lots of black and white photos and drawings and info on pre WW2 and WW2 French and Japanese concepts (Surcouf and I 400 subs etc) but not alot on the 1960-2005 era apart from Regulus spin offs and seaplane tenders.
Its a good read, but the cover is the most interesting illustration.
I have always thought the US Navy Sea Control Ship concept was a good one, back in the early 70s when the Nimitz class was costing $1 billion a copy the SCS was hoped to cost $100 million each. Although the SCS was primarily a ASW ship it could operate a few Harriers for limited air defence and surface attack capability.
SCS airgroup-11 ASW, 3 AEW helicopters and 3 Harriers.
The biggest drawback to small aircraft carriers is that better V/STOVL aircraft have not been developed to operate from them:(
Pics of SCS and the SCS developments PRINCIPE DE ASTURIAS, SPAIN and CHAKRI NARUEBET, THAILAND. http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/#Aircraft_Carriers_and_Amphibious_Ships
I have to admit that I didn’t think the Skyhook concept was a practical one, In my opinion it defeated the benefits of operating a V/STOVL aircraft that didn’t need shipborne systems such as catapults and arrestor gear.
I do have a book called Strike from Beneath the Sea: A History of Aircraft Carrying Submarines by Terry C. Treadwell which has a very good cover illustration featuring a Skyhook equiped submarine aircraft carrier:)
There is a nice book out on the F/A-22 at the moment the LOCKHEED/MARTIN F/A-22 RAPTOR: Aerofax series by Jay Miller. http://www.ianallansuperstore.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?session_id=1515ae560&product_id=31333&mode=productinfo
Very nice pics and drawings including the FB-22 proposal.
