JSF will probably turn out OK, but in my opinion the F-22 should have been the joint program, producing a outstanding multi-role stealth fighter along the lines of the F-15E in CTOL airforce and navy versions to replace the A-6, F-111, F-14, F-15, F-18 and F-117.
The replacement of the F-16 and Harrier should have been 2 seperate programs so no airframe compromises would be needed to produce a low cost fighter and a ASTOVL fighter.

How hard does it have to be?

The RN wants to operate 20-30 escorts, each with a service life of 20-30 years, so the obvious solution would be to build 1 a year.
The same applies to subs, carriers, amphibs and RFA ships. 1 sub and 1 RFA every 2 years and 1 carrier or amphib every 5 years.

This would bring about stable employment, skills retention, better build quality and stable and predictable costs.

Hope it does all work out though. Seeing the use HMS Richmond is being put to providing emergency assistance operations in wake of hurricane Ivan in the Carribean a dozen or so of these vessels, obviously equipped to RN commonality standard, could fulfill the low-end side of the anticipated RN FSC project hi-low mix quite handily!.

    My thoughts exactly!

As you say, carrying MBTs is overdoing it a bit, but the ability to carry and land a few trucks, engineer vehicles and a field hospital would greatly enhance peace time operations. In combat operations the extra room could be used for stores and reloads.

Proposal to fit Sea Sparrow and Stingers, I’d guess they mean ESSM and RAM.

Or perhaps its preparation for a trial fit of a Grand Slam 22,000 pounder!

True, but it would be very useful for special ops raids, evacuations and disaster relief roles.

I’d like to see these operating the USMC Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle.

The B-2 was intended to go into the USSR and take out mobile ICBM launchers with the Short Range Attack Missile (nuclear warhead).
The UAV might actually be the rumored TR-3 which was supposed to be a stealth U-2 replacement.

    Electro Magnetic Pulse testing?
I have seen a picture of a B-52 towed out onto a huge wooden pedestal which is standing in a very large pit for EMP tests.

I think the sci-fi show was called INVASION.

Great idea, it would certainly make a terrorist attack like the one on the USS Cole in Yemen more difficult. Imagine one of these bumping up against your boat, pointing a Gatling gun at you and saying “Please leave the area, you have 20 seconds to comply” (ED-209 from the film ROBOCOP) then spinning up the Gatling gun!

No problems tracking high-speed targets, but big problems defeating them?
