Yeah, it’s been bugging me as well.
I’m interested in Greek aircraft. I keep reading, in both Greek
and English, the reference to NATO paint schemes. I have
deduced that it’s the dark grey/dark green camo. Unfortunatelly it
differs from 1 aircraft type to the next. It mostly has to do with
where the aircraft originates from.
Greece got some F-86e/m (CL-13) from Canada, which wore
the Canadian NATO scheme.
They bought Noratlases from France, that wore the original
NATO scheme.
Etc, etc, etc.
The colors vary from type to type. Some were received by the Greeks in
the NATO colors, some were painted in Greece.
Some have a lighter Grey, Some have a lighter Green.
Unfortunately there was no Standard color scheme imposed by NATO.
By the way, if any one has pics of Greek aircraft in Nato markings, please
post them.
Does anyone have any pics of the F/A-18L hornet that flew with the Greek (Hellenic) Air Force, for evaluation. I’ve seen a small grainy black & white pic of it in flight, but can’t tell what colors it really flew in. It had Greek roundels on it, and the #00001.
Any help would be appreciated.
Looks like a Sikorsky HOS-1 (R-6) “Hoverfly II”
oooh oooh, I wanna see some too. Please. 😀
Does anyone have any pics of the Greek(Hellenic) F.1CG’s in the Ghost camo?
I’m also looking for pics of the wings, top & bottom, of the silver retirement scheme for the Greek F.1CGs. Anyone have pics, let me know.
Hey, Fantasma. You’re probably right. The red/white T-6II looks cool, though.
Thanks.
this is the pic of the red and white T-6II from the official HAF site.
I’m guessing the Greeks will go with the T-50. Although, if they do get the 90 or so Eurofighters, then they might opt for a European, or a Euro-Russian trainer. Ya never know.
By the way, have the Greeks ever flown the T-2c/e in RED/WHITE colors, ala the US Navy’s T-2’s or the Greek T-37’s? A friend of mine said that he once saw an illustration of a RED/WHITE Greek T-2. Perhaps they wore those colors during delivery from the US?
Also, on the HAF’s official website, somewhere, there is either an illustration or a picture of the new T-6II in RED/WHITE colors, ala the T-37. I’ve seen tons of pics of this bird in the Dark Blue/White colors for the HAF, but never in the RED/WHITE. Any info, guys
Hey Fantasma & Arthur. As a Greek living in Chicago, IL USA, I don’t have much in the way of resources, except for the general info I find on the web.
As for the list I put together, I got it at htt://http://www.worldairforces.com/Countries/greece/gre.htm
This site looks like it hasn’t been updated in about 4 years, but when it comes to older aircraft it should be pretty accurate. Again, you might notice on there that it lists the HAF as having chosen the F-15H, but as we all know, back in the late 90’s it was a possibility for the HAF to chose the F-15’s but this site was a bit premature in going that route.
As for listing all the variants, ie F-5A as opposed to the NF-5A, I figured that would be a little too specific. I married up all the same models into one group, such as the A7-H with the A-7C the HAF received in the 90’s.
Hey Fantasma, where did you get that cool pic of the RT-33A #TR482?
Is there a site where more pics like that are. I didn’t spot any HAF Roundels on it, did it even have any?
Let me know.
PS. I’d love to see more info and pics on Hellenic Wings. It’s a great little site. 🙂
Go here: for the list at worldairforces.com
Hellas, (Greece), received the T-33A in 1951. About 400 of them, not all at once. Then in 52′ they began receiving the first of 250 F-84Gs, and so on and so on.
Cyprus, by the way, has yet to get any jets. It’s frontliners are a couple of PC-9s.

Thanks Twilight2002. I’m planning on building a model of the Cypriot Mi-35. This info is awsome. I love the fact that they have it painted one dark color like that. Now if only I can customize the little Cyprus flag to add to the model kit.
I think the HAF would like to keep most of their F-16’s and Mirage 2000’s dedicated to the Interception/Fighter roles. Where as the A-7 is almost completely dedicated to ground attack, although it’s armed with AAMs. I was thinking about dedicating an aircraft strictly for the ground attack role. Perhaps a Trainer/Attacker, like the T-2e/c could have been used for, but isn’t. Perhaps the next jet trainer the HAF gets, could have a secondary role as an attacker.
Such as the Yak-130D, Mig-AT, L-159, K-8, Bae Hawk 200, or even the newer T-50. Unfortunatelly the Hellenic Army doesn’t have enough Apaches to hold back a large tank army such as Turkey’s.
They could use an attack plane to take some of those out, in case of an all out war. Which we all hope never happens. Anyway, just a thought.
Mirage F1 drawings…..
There are some nice color Illustrations at acig.org, including a couple of Hellenic ones. Most interesting is the F.1CG in Ghost camo scheme. I don’t know if this helps.:)
Thanks Arthur!
I figured that the NATO scheme was more of an overall reference to the grey/green with grey/silver undersides scheme. Is that Dutch F-104 also known as the “Splinter” sceme or is that a different scheme?
