I’m hearing the damage is severe. Seems like anything can be rebuilt these days so fingers crossed it will be.

    Hi Septic,

When Elmer had the engine failure at Osh. he put it down straight off the runway it hit rather hard.

    RER

Sorry, I was around Chino then and we knew the only failure was the pilot forgetting he wasn’t in the Mustang. The NTSB found the same.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND’S INADVERTENT USE OF THE MIXTURE RESULTING IN A LEAN MIXTURE.

    Here’s the airplane today 2 Jan 2016.

I got there a half hour after the seminar started but didn’t get the pilot’s name. And yes, of course the Germans killed everybody…Catholics, Gypsies, retarded people (including Hitler’s own relative), etc…

It was a great event, and was even attended by Nazi buff Lemmy from Motorhead! We only got one flyby, because the airplane had some kind of issue with gear , (it got down safe) but it was worth it just to see that. The guest speaker kind of went to a very controversial area, by saying it was a shame german civilians had to die and we are killing civilians now. I totally see his point, but people were getting upset that he seemed to forget 6 million other civilians that were killed in Germany. I wasn’t too ticked off, (I know some there were) but he should have stuck to the flying stories.

I have not been on this board much lately, and had no idea this had happened until I just now opened up the Feb Pacific Flyer, published here on the west coast, USA. There was no name mentioned…so I googled it…Been reading and looking at Steve’s stuff in Flypast for years…very sad. My heart kind of stopped because I had a feeling it would be somebody I either know or know of. If you’ve read only Flypast- you’ve seen his fantastic work. Condolences to the Key publishing team and Steve’s family.

Have always enjoyed hearing stories about Ormond and reading about him over the years. Does anybody know what exactly caused the fatal P-51 accident?

Unfortunately, as painful as this is, it is news, and I agree with the poster who says it’s the media’s job to cover it. If one doesn’t want to see coverage of crashes then dont read the newspaper or turn on the tv. The images and video do help to understand the reasons behind it. I only recently saw the Mosquito footage and no report ever did for me what that video shows. Thankfully the moment of impact is edited out.

News media are now confirming it was Colin and his five year old son.

Thanks for the replies. Have been to Sensheim and Speyer and won’t be in that area this trip. This trip it will be Berlin, I am already going there for a concert by Ritchie Blackmore at Spandau Castle. Sensheim and Speyer are really awesome, everything but the kitchen sink museums with more than just airplanes, there are trains, cars, clothes, organs, you name it. I didn’t know about Hermeskiel, Ill make a note of it for the visit after this one. Thanks!

Hmm “no time for 4 engined bombers”. Or really much else with four engines. The B-24 has sat for years, it’s complete and was flying. He has enough to put a B-29 together and a B-17, but hasn’t. His A-26 was being put back together but it never flew, nor has the Tigercat. Kermit’s a great collector, but not really flying much. He’s more of a David Tallichet, buy it, then store it for 40 years without touching it, while flying only a few of a collection that goes into the 100s. On that note, I’m actually glad the Marauder is grounded, that’s what I hoped for. After the loss of the CAF airplane, it’s too rare to fly ever. The only way the Lanc would ever fly, is for someone to make Kermit an offer he can’t refuse, then pour ten million dollars (or more) into a restoration. Who’s going to do that? I’m a huge fan of Kermit’s and I’ve dealt with him in the past and he’s always been very kind, so don’t take my words the wrong way.

Ah jeez…with You Tube all is available to see. What a bloody waste and I feel sick having just watched that, (and I searched on my own before I saw the other post about the clip) why did they have to pull it up like that? I’d never seen the crash before, of course I heard of it the day after. They almost made it and were recovering, too late. I’m often reminded of this lovely aeroplane and it’s very sad none are flying. I just was looking at a Mosquito at a museum recently and of course I was thinking of the last flyer. A real shame.

God that, pic of Ray Hanna I had to read the caption twice to make sure it wasn’t Mark. Incredible.
