It was bought from a tender. It was just as likely to be bought for preservation as even then the F.2A were rare in the U.K. As is clear there was never an intention to ‘preserve’ it -indeed mutiple enquiries to try and do something effective with it over the years were always met with a negative response from her owner. Therefore it was an attraction .
Cool, we’ll agree to disagree :eagerness:
The A-1 Lightning wasn’t preserved.
Not in its later life, no. But it was certainly saved from the chop and put on display after its military life came to an end.
Wittmund had the special scheme Phantom 37+11 on display on base which was removed and stripped for spares in 2011.
Has anyone mentioned the ex-A1 Lightning and the Blackpool Vulcan?
Great to see a Lightning back in the air. Is it the Thunder City team who are still operating and maintaining it?
It’s definitely a PS job. The Phantom is taken from this image..

A fairly pricey Phantom FGR2 nose cone..
WV372 (G-BXFI) is now owned by Graham Peacock and operates from North Weald. Out of all the ex-Team Viper Hunters it’s WV372 that’s still most commonly seen on the circuit.
WV322 (G-BZSE) is also at North Weald and I believe the plan is to restore it to airworthy condition.
XE601 (G-ETPS) was sold to Apache Aviation and went off to France. I’d heard that the aircraft is now in pieces providing spares for the rest of their fleet, but haven’t seen anything to back this up.
XE685 (G-GAII) was sold to Hawker Hunter Aviation and is currently as Scampton, providing spares for the rest of their fleet.
XL573 (G-BVGH) is also airworthy and lives down at St Athan.
Awesome images! But I thought it was 1st October 1992 they were retired?
Is there a danger of it being scrapped then? Just thought it strange that they’re asking for donations but not really providing any information on why the move is so urgent.
On a similar vein but different aircraft, XR713 http://www.lightnings.org.uk/Save_XR713.aspx
Is there any more news on XR713 around? Why is the purchase so urgent?
I’m pretty gutted to see Flapjack retire. The displays were always a highlight and looked good come rain or shine. I’d love to be at Al Ain to see him put Miss D through her paces for the last time!
There were a couple of 2 seat Hunters Flying a North Weald Airfield about 3 weeks ago on the saturday , not sure but i think they are based there now ,lovely to see from the saturday market side of the Airfield ,any one know the fuel cost to fly a Hunter for 1 hour ??
That’ll be WV372 (G-BXFI) and WV318 (G-FFOX). Both T7s are now based at North Weald and seem to be flying fairly regularly. WV322 (G-BZSE) is also in pieces in a hangar at NW and I believe the plan is to eventually get it in the air.
I wonder if Draken International is a development of the National Test Pilot School? The only reason that makes me think that is the NTPS used to operate some ex-RDAF Drakens and there’s the link in the name!
This is the graffiti that was scratched in to the Hunter T7. Taken from a Brunty related facebook page..

Haven’t a Scooby about any other engine/taxiing incidents though!
Been a bit quiet for a while – any updates from down at St Athan?
I thought I was going crazy when I saw it while driving back from RIAT the other day. I could have sworn it wasn’t up there when I was heading to Fairford last Tuesday.. now I know I wasn’t going crazy!
