Is much of the aircraft left or is it just a case of assorted bits and bobs?

Vickers Wellington, going off the long thin wing profile. It looks more like a charcoal drawing than a photograph.

The more i look at it the more i’m certain its a Wimpy.

just googled the date on the note 24/11/40 and there were some Wellington’s destroyed on the ground in Malta on that day….. might be just me putting 2+2 and coming up with 5……….

Andy, could they have got the code letters from a combat report off the pilot who brought it down?

i was at that show as a young 9/10 year old boy, can still picture the last moments in my head of the spit going up into the loop and hitting the deck hard in a slight nose up attitude. made quite an impression at that age, but fortunately didn’t spoil my passion for aviation.

    RIP David Moore.

No disrespect to the pilot who lost his life but isn’t 79 a little bit to old to be flying solo in a high performance aircraft, i’m sure he will of no doubt under gone numerous tests every year but it just seems to be pushing it, anyway a sad loss of life RIP John Harris.

Spent 4 months at the ATR based there 12 years ago, a leg injury in training ended my budding army service though. I remember going into one of the hangers and seeing what looked like an Auster army co-op aircraft in there, wonder what happened to it? Never got to go into the tower museum which is a shame but spent plenty of time getting beasted around parts of the old airfield and in one of the hangers that had been converted into a gym!! Can also recall one day when the airfield was overflown by a pair of eagles at low (by American standards…… :highly_amused:) level, that was a lovely sight and sound!!

Could of sworn there is a Miles Magister in the museum of science and industry in Manchester, i had the pleasure of sitting in it while on a behind closed doors tour with my Grandad some 15/16 years ago. Trying to dig up some info on it but cant find anything……

The contrast I’ve witnessed between the UK and the USA in their attitudes towards their deceased war heroes is a revelation.

its disgraceful, the American’s have a unit called JPAC (Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command) dedicated to finding service personnel who are still missing in action/killed in action body not recovered. Its just a shame that our government don’t seem to take the same pride in finding/bringing home the remains of our personnel who gave their lives on active duty.

TwinOtter23, no problem i’m just pleased it is of interest to people. The 467 ORB’s state that my grandfather joined the squadron on 23.05.44 from No 51 Base and left to join No 14 OTU on the 03.10.44. I would of thought he would of served 6 months as an instructor before joining an operational squadron again, which i believe was 9 Squadron.

Top draw stuff there 467 sqn RAAF, neat to see your granddad flew on ‘Sugar’ 😎

thanks, yeah not bad flying your first op on a aircraft that had recently knocked up its century! been doing some bits of research managed to find out that his pilot was awarded the DFC at the end of the tour. cant find out anything else about his crew apart from his room mate Eric Klemm who was killed on ops with another crew.

my grandfather flew a full tour exclusively as rear gunner with 467 Sqn RAAF, he completed his tour then went to 14 OTU as an instructor then served with 9 Sqn in India. I seem to remember that he mentioned something about 101 Sqn but cant get access to his service record and he doesn’t really talk to much about what he did. here are the pictures from his log book for those interested.

The “last” display of the Vulcan at Woodford airshow when i was a young lad, for many years after i had a massive poster on my wall of the beast in flight as a reminder. First time i saw her in flight again was at the Dawlish airshow when she flew with the Reds, if somebody had took a picture of me it would of been something like this….. :D:D:D

Passed these aircraft many times while doing my gliding scholarship (in Grob Vigilant’s) with the ATC in the early 2000’s. Its a real shame that that 635 VGS are no longer flying out of Samlesbury was a nice area to mooch around. Plus the added fact of one of the country’s first KFC’s been on the other side of the airfield! 🙂
