“If this is the sum total of the indigenous Iranian aerospace industry, adding a second vertical tail to the F-5 and squaring off the air intakes, its quite frankly pathetic. Maybe if they spent less time spewing hate, spreading violence, subjugating women, cutting of peoples limbs etc etc and more time engineering they might achieve something worthwhile.”

The topic was about the Saeqeh. You decided to be judgemental and brought an unrelated political dynamic into it. It is you who should apologise. Please take your personal issues and hatred and create a topic about yourself in the General Discussion thread. 🙁

I think that it is fairly obvious that a phased step by step approach is the most logical way to develope an aero industry. Start with upgrades, followed by tweaking of an existing design, and finally perhaps a conservative local design. It is what the Chinese and Israeli industry did and makes sense.

Well, the “blowing” reference at least means that there is continueing refinement and work on aerodynamic configurations. I was not aware that they were working on two projects. Nice to see that MiG perhaps is not so dead and buried as a design house.

    “A new RuAF news thread”

That’s the title of this thread. Not “JSF/F-35 news” There have been real nuggets of good info in this thread, such as fairly senior players confirming work on two projects. a light and medium/heavy application.

Whilst discourse is good, please please please keep your personal conflicts out of what has been a wonderful thread. Just don’t open this topic. Please. I’m enjoying it as I’m sure many others are. Create an argumentative thread in general discussion, or better yet, a thread titled “JSF Rulz” or something. Please, it is a reasonable appeal.

Vympel, keep the quality info coming.

South Africa has a full international standard civil radar network. The South Africans also manufacture their own radar systems. Go to http://www.rrs.co.za for more info. I think that there is another radar manufacturer but their name eludes me at present. It seems they manufacture a Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) radar as well! Info and force compositions on Airforce and Army radar systems are scarce for the obvious reason of national security.

The SAAF also flies Boeing 707 which has a partial Phalcon AEW as far as I know.

As for the rest of Africa…I’m not sure, but it was not known as the Dark Continent for nothing!! :diablo:

The Al41 is a fascinating subject. It is clearly being positioned as the main fighter/strike engine for the future Russian Airforce.

Please allow me to ask a few questions.

The original engine as envisaged for the 1.44 was designed to be in the size range of the Al-31, indeed as a replacement for that engine. So why make it smaller?

I have seen various weights from between 1500kg to 1800kg and assume this to be the difference between dry and wet weights. The rough sizes I see are comparable to the Al-31.

The PAKFA is likely to be a large aircraft, and going with current trends for very high installed thrust to weight ratios, why then reduce the size or thrust? Or is it a case of perhaps ramping up the power output at a later stage?

Are there any single engine applications envisaged?

I remember a few years back that it was stated in numerous aviation books that South Africa had a manufacturing licence for the Atar9K50. I do know that various parts were manufactured/remanufactured for these engines over the years. Did South Africa ever build any? Did they indeed have a licence and/or capability to do this? How long would the original 9K50’s that arrived with the F1 fleet have lasted?

Yeah…..Hang on a minute!! There were people claiming on this site that the Cheetah C was re-engined with Atar 9K50’s from the Mirage F-1 fleet. Now, there were 38 Cheetah C’s and 14 or 16 2 seater Cheetah D’s. Together they would have accounted for the entire F-1 fleets engines. What engines are going with the F-1’s to Gabon? Or are the Chhetahs not using the F-1 fleets engines? (and engine spares, of course!)

Thanks SOC, I was under the impression that the prototype flew with Al-31’s whilst the Al-41 was for the production variant.

I may have 117 posts under this name which replaced my two previous names over the years as I’ve moved here and there. 😎

It was merely a request that people stay true to the topic of the thread to degenerate into an “American is better than Russian so there!” type downward spiral. I think this is a reasonable request.

Slightly obliquely, which engines powered the 1.44? I think it was the AL-31 and not the AL-41? If so, the exhaust nozzles were different and appeared to have ceramic(?) internal petals. Can anyone confirm this?

Don’t feed the Trolls. This is a discussion about the Russian Airforce. Please do not make it into a pi**ing contest, or ‘my ones bigger than yours’. You know who you are. Please create a seperate thread if you feel the need to compare.
