I know it’s late , but better late than never…
Distiller….South Africa generates almost 30% of the GDP of the entire African continent. It has the 10th largest stock-exchange worldwide , and is the 20 richest nation worldwide if total GDP is considered. It is not a matter of “using them against their black bretheren”.South Africa is a racially diverse country with bizarrely enough , the Chinese section the fastest growing. It has poverty , it has aids , but it also has some of the most mature financial systems in the world and a very developed heavy industry sector….I think that South Africa , Brazil and China(?) formed a Non-aligned pact a little while back…..anyway , the point of the purchase of these aircraft is in line with the justifiable moaning of the USA that South Africa play a part in African peacekeepng more commesurate with it’s size…and to do this will require aircraft with larger capacity/range characteristics than the C-130 and CASA tpt’s.With the Iraqi occupation requirements and events like Mogadishu , this makes sense from a US political perspective….Just think the C-17 would be a little too large.
not sure .. Germany , France , Italy…..?…..
I think that the South African cameramen are clearly a fantastic bunch…..
hmmm…the back fins of the weapon in front of the cheetah appear considerably larger than the front ones , and there is a large bulge in the middle….
I take it you have tried http://www.denel.co.za
What missile/bomb is that in front
Kentron are the main manufacturer , but I think they are called Denel Aerospace now or something.
Does anyone know if South Africa has ordered any? Will it possibly replace their Seeker UAV?
another
Good grief..I wasn’t aware that Pattle actually scored a portion of his victories flying a bi-plane! Are there any clues as to what happened to the squadron records? ie. were they destroyed by the British definitively or captured by the Germans? I always thought ‘Sailor” Malan was the top scoring South African pilot.
Lava , that second last picture was part of the development of the Su-24.as you can see in this thread , the Soviets were not scared to modify prototypes/developments of their up and coming aircraft. The aircraft in that 2nd last picture apparantely had atrocious handling characteristics and was redesigned with a swing wing and put into service as the Su-24.I’m at work now , so I’ll dig up some info tonight.
Actually , I do remember the Dieter Gerhard case. He was either in charge , or very high up in Simons Town.they never publically stated what he leaked , but then thats no surprise.Suffice to say it was a huge scandal and it was stated that the damage done was not insignificant.
South Africas indigeonous air to air missile program started way back in 1963 with a technological base as its first objective. This was the time of voluntary sanctions which later turned mandatory. The first helmet mounted sight was ready by the mid 70’s , and although relatively limited in comparison to later refinements and developments , was the first system in use.Today , Kentron are assisting in the HMS for Eurofighter.
Also , does anyone know the status of the MUPSOW and wether it will be integrated on the Gripen when it enters SAAF service?
