It is worth noting that the Jaguar is essentially a French design, being based largely on the Breguet Br 121.
In the context of this thread, it’s undercarriage was also produced by Dassault Breguet.;)
Apr. 1 again:confused:
Like his other article, there is no link posted.
So one has to assume so.
😉
Did the SAAF ever use pgms off the F.1AZ?
Not sure about bombs actually, but certainly the AS-30 missile.
I wonder how the iron bomb accuracy of the F.1AZ would stack up against the A-4M with its ARBS? Or maybe the A-7D?
I was just going to suggest a deeper analysis of the Jaguar v Mirage F1AZ avionics.
Good questions, and why I always am very sceptical of manufacturers claims in general.
Ferrari will always say they’re better than Lamborghini.
The Viggen had some very nifty avionics for its day.
cough… F-20 !
Pity that aircraft didnt go ahead, just poor marketing and a changing world (at the time). Still think it could be revived… surely the current operators of the F-5 would be ready to replace them soon?
I’m unsure of the production facilities to revive the F-20 would still be in place, 27 years after that was cancelled.
The last F-5 rolled off the production line a year later, 26 years ago.
I suspect there are true replacements out there in the JF-17 and Gripen, both of which are in production. I’d include the Ching Kuo, but it is out of production too, and comes with political difficulties. The Tejas also carries the same spirit, but has it’s own set of problems.
The US produces a “light” fighter, the F-16, but it weighs in at a weight approaching 9 tons empty these days.
Nevertheless, it is operated by a swathe of nations, and is probably the US spiritual modern day F-5.
It’s replacement, whos name I dare not mention, is having a whole set of issues of its own, not the least of which is an expanding waistline, with an empty weight approaching 14 tons…..
Agree to this, but not to military assistance.
Open warfare is too risky.
They’ve already got this encroachment with Taiwan, Phillippines, Japan and South Korea.
Not a single one of those share a land border with China.
The closest is Taiwan, and we all know the situation there.
There will be no solution in Korea without taking on board Chinas feelings on the matter, no matter how unpalatable that may be to some.
I’m not claiming that my way of looking at this is the gospel, but all evidence that I can see, over many decades, points very firmly in this direction.
The whole thing, to me, shows just how political the Jag purchase was from the French side. Im wondering how much the plan to fly Jag.M of their carriers weighed in the final descision of the French to go ahead with Jag.
The Jaguar M proved to be unsuitable for carrier use, due to its engines, if I remember correctly.
I always thought, as discussed on a thread here a while ago, that the Mirage F1, suitably redone, would have made a far better carrier aircraft than the Jaguar.
I doubt they would help if South Korea attacked the North either.
As stated they don’t want WWIII on their hands.
It’s like the discussions about the Cold War turning Hot – when do you engage? Take over of West Berlin? Limited actions in Baltic?
The old saying was “is it better to be Red than Dead?”
I think the Chinese would play the peace making diplomat whilst trying to prevent their borders being overrun by North Korean refugees.
They’d glean as much intel out of it of course..
They would certainly help, whether it is confined to diplomatic or economic pressure only.
Why would they possibly want a US intel encroachment/influence right on their border?
It may have been disguised under the banner of Communism in the Korean war, but the reasons China got involved in that conflict when the N Koreans looked like they were losing are as valid now as they were then.
Indeed..not a true “British” design
It was also first rolled out at Toulouse, and the first prototype in the air was 001, which was the French built one, again at Toulouse.
A magnificent achievement by both countries, nevertheless.
China wouldn’t help if N Korea went offensive.
They would certainly get involved if the roles were reversed though.
i said aircraft of the same role and era. unfortunately no role/era comparable in late 60s early 70s from the British side.
I know… I was doing the teasing for once.:dev2:
in general, between aircraft of the same role and same era..
the British designs > French designs.but the Frenchies sure look better.
Could you give us a late 1960’s, early 1970’s British fighter design comparable to the Mirage F1?
And the Jaguar is as much French as it is British…..
