So are they really developing this as a long range maritime patrol vehicle? Is anybody else using a UAV in this role at the moment?

Where are all the idiots who used to hold the anti-apartheid concerts and anti-Rhodesian and anti-South African marches, particularly in England? Where are they now indeed…….

Brazil negotiating to join Bateleur UAV project

    By: Keith Campbell

South Africa and Brazil are negotiating a project to jointly develop an unmanned air vehicle (UAV), Brazilian Air Force Colonel Nelson Silveira confirmed on Friday.

Colonel Silveira is the Brazilian project officer on the joint South African/Brazilian A-Darter, a fifth generation infrared homing air-to-air missile programme.

He said that a memorandum of understanding on cooperation on UAVs was signed between the two countries a year ago. The UAV to be jointly developed was the Denel Bateleur medium-altitude long-endurance UAV.

An initial South African proposal regarding the Bateleur was made to the commander of the Brazilian Air Force in mid-May. The Brazilians were expecting to receive a full proposal, including timeframes and cost estimates, from South Africa in the near future.

Should the project go ahead, as both sides hope, the Bateleur would be acquired by the Brazilian Air Force.

This joint UAV project would be modelled on the current joint A-Darter project, which was proving highly successful. The Bateleur concept was developed by South Africa’s Denel four years ago, but had been stalled as a result of a lack of funding.

It was known that development of the project was dependent on obtaining a foreign partner. These negotiations with Brazil are likely to provide that partner.

Seems that there is ever closer co-operation between Brazil and South Africa on various projects. Good news it seems. I don’t know where India is in all this as the three countries were supposed to co-operate together on various projects as a non-aligned bloc. So far it appears that the Brazilian Piranha AAM has the V-3 Darter seeker head, colaboration appears to be moving ahead on the A-Darter, possibly the T-Darter, and now the Bataleur.

I was under the impression that Sweden’s offset obligations had been met completely before this interest. Perhaps it is just a good buy? I know Finland chose the IR Umkhonto on merit.

A brief survey of public info shows the Radar Umkhonto to have between 10% more range and 30% higher intercept altitude than the Mica VL. It can also fire towards and engage 8 targets simultaneously versus the 4 of the Mica. The Mica is in production though, and the radar version of the Umkhonto has apparently finished tests and is waiting to be productionised.

A little while back there was a Chinese project for an altered F-7. It had an intake under the cockpit and small canards. I’d imagine that this is dead in the water as a result of the J-10 and JF-17. Does anyone remember this project? It was shown in model form in AFM a few years back…

Then there are the odd transports from the 1950s, which are generally without any sense of proportion but looking good exactly because of that.

Having English as a second or whatever language is one thing, but when someone is obviously from the US or UK, and can barely type in English, I’m not going to give their opinion too much value.

That is exactly what I’m suggesting as well.:)

The South African Airforce has a considerable number of DC-3/C-47’s on their inventory. These are not hangar queens, but are used as transports, with a few used as maritime patrol aircraft with updated electronics/radar. So they still fulfill vital airforce roles and duties.

Now I know that they have been extensively modernised with turboprops and aerodynamic changes amongst others. But surely the manufacturers plate is still the same?

So I’d guess that it would most likely be a DC-3/C47 somewhere…..most of them are on their way to their 70th birthday!!!

I feel hatred & bitterness towards those who write “of”, when they mean “have”, e.g. “He must of meant something else”.

Now I of finished typing that, I’ll of my breakfast. :diablo:

My personal bugear is people who haven’t the ability to see the difference between ‘you’re’ and ‘your’. I’ve seen people respond on the internet with “your an idiot”.

    Hilarious.:D

Will they be grabbing AMRAAMs or something similar to use while T-Darter completes development?

I have no idea. Perhaps they will keep some R-Darters available, but not spend much, if anything on maintenance/upgrades? Certainly the original intention was to equip Gripen with the R-Darter in the interim, and a certain amount of work was done on making the systems compatible.

I do see that the Defence Materiel Disposal division of Armscor are advertising 21 Cheetah C’s at Eurosatory 2008 and the sale includes “Darter beyond visual range missiles”. So perhaps AMRAAM would be an interim choice as well? Who knows…. the SAAF have always been secretive.

I have no idea either of the timescale we are talking of re the new Denel BVRAAM.

Over at the saaf forum is a guy called Boertjie who apparentely worked at Denel on AAM’s until the late 90’s. He might have a clearer idea of this missiles development path. He posted in the below thread…
