Most probable is that they are Israeli weapons and they don’t want other to know.
So what’s a “sortie” ?
More in detail, what a sortie equates to?
It means a single plane out or a coupe or the whole squadron?
We had the same problem with comparing mission/strike /weapon dropped statistics between Western aviations and Ruaf over Syria some years ago and it turned out, as an example was found that mission is (for western) equivalent of number of air assets (so also drones, tankers or even liason helicopters) send out in the sky a given day; so if a couple of fighters make three aerial refuelling to come over Syria following the call sign of a recon drone, find nothing and get back we have six missions (2+3+1) but 0 strikes.
Yeah but we are talking about export. There are countries out there like Mine, Vietnam and maybe Venezuela too operating Su-27/30 family with N001 which nearing its end of usefulness. Having N036 derivatives will help bring more life in these aircrafts. and I even wonder if N035 is backward compatible with previous flanker. It is indeed tested onboard Su-30MK2 flying laboratory but i haven’t see it being offered as backfit to previous flankers.
As good as it is. The N035 still retain conventional tubes. Despite greatly increased service life of 1500 hrs compared to previous radar’s 200-500 hrs. It still in long term no longer competitive against longer life solid state modules. Increased coverage through antenna slewing is a thing but reduced maintenance offered by active array is also something worth consider too. Plus it is flexible in both transmit and receive. Plus it will help reduce development cost for Russian AESA’s through scale of mass production.
What you didn’t IMHO consider is that installing an AESA radar in substitution of a mechanical steered one would change completely the plane balance itself (as they are extremely nose-heavy compared to them), at the same time it would mean to have a quite limited FoV. when russians absolutely prefer to not compromise such value.
I
What do you think would be the remaining useful life of those old Su-27?
1000? No problem at all. 1500? a little extra investment on maintenance. 3000? you take them aground a week, change the tubes and the antenna and you are ready to go again.
Adapting the N036 would mean to spend years into developing it, as no studies have ever made to adapt it to a Flanker even the newer ones, while the work about installing a Pesa radar are already been made but in the end not implemented for Su-27-SM3 update.
There is no need to include the cheek array. If wider situational awareness and near omni-directional high bandwitdh datalink is desired. the interested party can purchase Su-57.
Fact is that AESA N036 frontal radar array is fixed while the one of N035 can (also) be steered allowing a wider FoV.
And Su-57 is born as the natural substitute for Su-27 in VKS:
Not for now at least. Not until production of Su-57 begin and everything mature enough.
I would love tho to see offshoot of N036 in shape of upgrade package to existing Su-27’s That’s gonna be interesting for Flanker users worldwide. Even the power aperture might be lower compared to equal American counterpart. That will address obsolescence issues on N001 Myech family. and Su-27 airframe have good cooling potential.
Much more probable a N035 derivative, putting AESA N036 means founding places for side array radars and completely change plane weight distribution, a Pesa radar, already thought for a Flanker would be a way easier way to go.
Not just Italy, Sweden is in the Tempest bandwagon also.
And an influent and well respected politician, even if of a minor party.
There are a big problem. The TEMPO.
UK and Italy have F-35 A. France, Germany and possibly Spain no. So, those countries need next fighter generation being developed fastly, UK or Italy does not need, they have their needs totally covered for next 30 years.
So i don’t see easy both proyects will join together on next future.
RALL rest assured that no one in my own country’s airforce would even think at the F-35 as a substitute for Typhoon (that we are actually still acquiring) or as an alternative to new gen A2A fighter.
The Lighting II are here to take the place of Tornado and Ghibli i.e. to drop bombs and cruise missiles, no place for multirole (or better said Jack of all trades) fighters in AMI.
France got Rafales so their actual needs are covered, it’s mainly Germany that have a problem of line obsolescence but because it lacks a substitute for Tornado and not for Typhoon.
I’ve tried to put the problem in the right dimension but there is a certain type of stealth mystique running amok that coupled with the usual dose of chauvinism ubiquitous in such forums seems to prevent such apparently simple things to happen.
Move was expected, Spain is involved with Airbus consortium and so have a convenience to side with them.
Same with Sweden with UK Tempest,
My own country would probably side with them also, actually we are already in it through Leonardo UK from the beginning.
Our government is just too recent and busy to seriously think about it. Also because we are waiting the Thing-not-to be-mentioned-in-this-forum to happen in order to have a clearer idea of the legal framework we would need to operate in.
First both:F-35 and J-20 ones are FLIR with a secondary use as an IRST, completely different things, second Su-57 one is near to both cockpit and radar dish , both of them having a way greater radar return than it.
The number of MiG-31 in service are: (thanks to AMCXXL)
VKS
Akhtubinsk: 2 BM + 10K
Savasleyka: 12 BM (after losing 1 BM)
Ts.Uglovaya: 24 BM
Kansk: 24 BM (after losing 3)
Perm: 24 BM
Khotilovo: 24 BM known
Total: 110 BM and 10 K
NAVY
Monchegorsk: 10 BM (after relocate several BM to other bases)
Yelizovo: 10 not Modernized, to replace soon (half DZ)
Total:140
Other planes would however be added:
More probably overall increase of RCS due of its use is negligible in any case, almost at distances superior to its own useful range.
Radar dish and cockpit own return signal are surely way greater.
Angelo Tofalo is , for what I know just an undersecretary i.e. not someone really important.
I have the impression they want to delay the choice the most as they can and talk about it even less.
Delaying is a smart move IMHO, FOC configuration and full rate production is near and we can wait for them.
And obviously, I support F-35 acquisition by my own country, not because I think it’s something extraordinary or out of this world at all as LM propaganda suggest, just that what we need is a strike aircraft as a substitute for Tornado and AMX and F-35 is an excellent choice for this role.
About communication mode I personally use formulas like IMHO , AFAIK , in my opinion… to specify it’s a personal opinion and not some God written truth.
Some more J-20 footage:
So someone would try an eyeball Mk1 evaluation on how manoeuvrable they are ?
