I have read that the yellow spinner was so that other pilots could tell which was the OC’s aircraft. Thanks for the replies. I kind of guessed that it could have been what antoni said. Either different QV-K or same aircraft different time period. Either way it’s a nice shot.
ZZ176 is a brand new aircraft. To my knowledge (I stand to be corrected) she has not even been to her new home at RAF Brize Norton yet. I was told that straight from the factory it went into the support role for the Red Arrows tour of North America.
I was down at the Victoria Bridge on Saturday afternoon. I saw the Dakota beating up the station at I presume Highley (could have been Arley also). It then proceeded to follow a train past me towards Kiddy. I thought that it would probably just roughly follow the line south, but no, the Dak followed the line straight over my position 😀 I didn’t see what they did in Kiddy, but considering I got about 5 phone calls about him, I think it must have been good.
The Spit and Hurri were supposed to be doing a flypast at Wolverley at a dedication for the wwII american hospital that was there. I only saw that from home as they went straight past us, then a single pass over the town.
One possibilty is the simple reason that a lot of the air force diplays are flown by instructors on Operational conversion/training units, therefor it could just be the case that they have more twin sticks available to them than singles.
There’s a nose cone from I’m not sure what (looks like it is off a fast jet) used as an animal shelter just outside Kidderminster, near the Safari Park. Local rumours suggest that it may have been aquired from the former RAF Hartlebury, on the other side of town, when it shut down.
Beautiful lighting – did you take any of the more historic jets you could share to give a flavour of the variety? Is that Martin Baker’s Black Meatbox in the background of the Merlin shot – has it made it in after all?
Yes the Meatbox was there, along with a full size model of and even earlier Gloster jet…….
How did you get the gear up though?
Nice and simple, or so you would have thought. Ratchet straps… The guys took the pins out of the rams on the gears, then a combination of manually pushing them up, and skill by the crane driver lowering the aircraft. Then they put the straps on to keep them in position.
Unfortunately, putting the pins back in wasn’t so easy. 😡
Hi all,
I’m still running through my photos from yesterday, but G-BZJB, the green Yak left at 4:25pm. I was stood at the crash gate by Hold F when they were all going.
I also found this photo…
Don’t forget http://www.airshows.co.uk
1 = Jaguar T Mk2 (not sure regarding the Mark)
It would be the T.2….as the GR3/T4 versions didn’t come along for a good few years
There is a sequence of three shots in the fairford section of my site at http://dan.knight.net .
I was told a figure of 16 feet from the floor, when he SHOULD have levelled out at ~75feet. The incident was serious enough that the pilot was ordered to land by the Safety Commitee via ATC. He then spent 10-15 minutes circling the airfield, burning off fuel. I was further back in the same grandstand that the videographer was sat in, and I can tell you that he was at the same level, if not lower than I was!! Just take a look at the photos.
I believe that it has been put down to “pilot error”, though I do not know the precise reasons. The aircraft involved on the friday flew the displays over the weekend.
Big Dan – Seems a little spooky that the Sea Venom is still with them when it has been snapped by various enthusiasts safely tucked up in the Malta Air Museum hangar since last year. I have a feeling it might be confused with the Vampire T.11!
Sorry, it would have been the Vampire. As I said I was in a bit of a rush, so I couldn’t write down all of the details and my memory isn’t as good as it should be… He said that they may either swap it for another airframe, or sell it to fund the purchase of another.
Maybe they could make a replica of an E.28/39 as well
They already have a e28/39 replica. There’s pics of its construction at http://www.jetagemuseum.org .
AFAIK (I may be wrong) they have Meteor, Javelin, Gladiator (replica being built), Gamecock (also being built), Typhoon(front section) plus whatever I don’t know about.
Regards, Dan
I fianlly got a chance to speak with John this week.
The Meteor F3 is still with them, as is the Sea Venom (although it may be going sometime).
The Bucc and Canberra are being looked at to be tranferred to other organisations (I was asked not to say where as the deals are not done yet).
The Anson has gone.
As I said in my earlier post, they are looking at consolidating down to mainly Gloster produced aircraft. Sorry if there’s not a lot more info, but I was really busy when I saw him, so I couldn’t stop for long to speak.
I seem to remember John saying that they were trimming down the NON-Gloster aircraft in the collection. I’ll ask him when I see him next (We work for the same company) As for the building, Sorry I don’t know.
Dan
