I think the answer is no. What happens if the fleet is grounded due to a technical fault, as the case with the F-15s recently?

The simple fact is the F-35B could not perform the interception role as well as a Typhoon. It’s CAP time would be too short, in addition to it’s vertical acceleration time, which again would be too slow compared to the Typhoon.

The F-35B can not replace the GR4 either, due to range and weapon load.

Then again the Typhoon, could not perform all roles of the F-35B and GR4, for example – it does not have stealth, or the ability to operate from ships.

I think the future will be Typhoons and F-35Bs – they will be proably replace all frontline combat aircraft in the RAF, and FAA aircraft.

I would imagine though the Tornado will recieve a major upgrade in the near future, to extend it’s service life until the mid 2020s, possible upgrades will probably be various pods, advanced cockpit displays, intergration of AMRAAM for self protection with helmet mounted sight, JDAM maybe, improved data links, etc etc, but who knows what the idiots in the MOD will come up with.

What they really need is two squadrons of F-22s with RR engines, along with 4 squadrons of F-35Cs, two for the navy, two for the RAF – and ditch all the anglo-european 3rd and 4th gen crap 🙂

Get a couple of B-2s also and ‘resume long range bomber flights’ over Russia.

Why bother with Europe? When USA could give us everything we need?

“The RAF were never happy that the SHAR 2 with AMRAAM was more than a match for their fighter the F3.”

No match at all really – The Tornado F3 is one the most capable interceptors in service today, a shame the version in service now is 15 years too late (another MOD **** up). An F3 with it’s JTIDS, Foxhunter radar, 4 x AMRAAM, 4 x ASRAAM and massive range – The SeaHarrier was just 50% of a Tornado F3, if you are talking about interception.

The Harrier was designed to operate at temporary forward bases in West Germany, after the Soviets had destroyed all the airbases.

It is a wonder why Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Austria etc etc never operated the Harrier (on land), same goes for the USAF.

Lets face it, every pilot who flies anything onboard the CVFs, is going to come from the RAF, wether that be a JSF, F-18 or Rafale.

Lusty and Ark are obsolete without a fixed wing asset.

Ahhh but the steam driven cockpit of the early Su27 is not a happy place to be, any pilot operating an early Su27 is not very situationally aware. This is OK when you consider the Russians heavily relied on GCI but I would argue that looking aside from pure flight performance the Super Hornet cockpit is the place I would much rather be and fight from.

Operating in a link16 environment with other platforms in combination with a well designed cockpit mmi, helmet mounted sight, AMRAAM and AIM9x the Super Hornet is certainly not a foe I would take lightly.

True, the CGI system for the Su-27 and MIG-31. Thoses planes are pretty much useless without it aren’t they?

Having said that, I would still gulp after being told to engage a Flanker, from any generation, if I was sitting in a SuperHornet – or in anything else for that matter.

    A dial can’t crash.

Ok it is 2012 and you are a NATO pilot on alert at a European airbase. There has been a war going on with Russia.

The “phone rings” and there is an incoming Su-34 approaching the base and you are told to scramble and destroy the foe.

Outside there are 2 fighter aircraft both ready to go, they both have 4 x AMRAAMs, 1 x 27 Mauser and 2 x SRAAMs. One of them is a Typhoon tranche 3, the other is a F-35A – you have months of experience on both types.

All fuel is carried internally on F-35 and Typhoon has 1 external tank. The Su-34 is 500 miles away.

Which plane do you get in to perform the interception?

How can the Raptor be obsolete?

Of course the software/hardware on the F-35 will be more advanced – it was developed a 10 years later.

That doesn’t mean it can perform it’s roles anybetter.

Look at the Su-27 – anaolgue fly-by-wire and a ‘steam age’ cockpit. It can still outperform a ‘digital’ SuperHornet for example.

Trouble is if you dump Tornado you lose Stromshadow, Raptor pod, ALARM and cannon (I understand GR7/9annon not used) – Typhoon is not ready yet for ASM.

As for reducing GR4 fleet – then you still have two types of aircraft, so the reduction in cost will not be as effective as operating just 1 type. What can the GR7/9 do that a Tornado can’t with regard to the RAF?

Tornado GR4 is already used for CAS – thats why it is being sent to A-STAN.

Tornado F3 is being phased out anyway – by 2011 I think – there are only 2 operational squadrons left.

It really does look like the CVFs will have no fixed wing aircraft.

Too late for a Typhoon N, and it looks like JSF will not be ready.

Maybe Rafale (unlikely) or F/A-18E/F (unlikey also) if JSF becomes too delayed.

As for crew training – exchange with USN and USMC on T-45/TAV-8B/F/A-18D/F?

I agree MRA4 should of never been started – it has already cost lives (engineering problems have forced delays thus extending MR2 beyound what was intended). Maybe a P-3 upgrade instead – if airframes were available?

What about pulling out of A400M, and using more C-130Js and C-17As instead?

It begs the question why the MOD didn’t remove all the GR7/9s from the RAF and transfer some of them to the FAA to operate a mixed force on each carrier, for example 6 GR7/9s performing attack and 6 SeaHarriers performing air defence and recon?

In reality, if they cancel the Harrier, the replacement now, will obviously be the Tornado – with Brimstone, Maverick, Mauser, KFF and PGMs – for the RAF anyhow at least (Tornados to go to A-Stan, Brimstone entering service). Don’t forget the Typhoon with KFF and PGMs, and even the Tornado F3s train for CAS using the Mauser cannon these days!

You can use anything anyhow for a ‘show of force’.

As for the Navy, they don’t really do a lot anyhow, other than visit the carriers twice a year I think.

If you ask me JFH was just another MOD **** up as far as the £s go.

The RN will probably end up with 20 T-45 Goahawks, armed with 1 cannon and 2 Sidewinders – as point defence fighters, ha ha.

On this, I’ve wondered for some time, whether it would be worthwhile for a company to buy the rights to a classic airframe, like the Hunter, or A-4 and produce newbuild examples.

The emphasis being on delivering a proven, mature airframe, that’s relatively easy to maintain.

Would the potential market be too small to justify something along these lines?

I don’t think you could rebuild an aircraft like the A-4 or Hunter – it would be more cost effective to simply buy an aircraft like a Hawk – an aircraft from an already runnung production line.

Nobody seems to be mentioning negative G?

Would any combat aircraft dogfight carrying ext. fuel tanks- I thought the idea was you drop them before engaging?

Does the F-35 have range, acceleration, endurance and load of a Typhoon, enabling it to perform long range CAP, which is a requirement of the RAF?

Could the F-35 carry 4 x Stormshadows internally, and 4 x AMRAAMs? And if if it could carry that load externally what advantages would it offer over the Typhoon?

    What am I asking?

Can the F-35 do everything the Typhoon can – if it can, the Typhoon was a very expensive mistake.

I would of thought that the emerging capabilities of the JSF would of been envisioned before the Typhoon contracts were signed.

I think if the PAK-FA is anything less than a Raptor, it will never be. It will be designed, or the intention of the design, will be the ability to avoid and even destroy the Raptor.

I think the purity of the supply chain and lack of opposition inside the government will ensure these aims are achieved. Plus the extensive design and development work, reverse engineering and industrial espionage from Raptor programme!

Could a Typhoon intercept and destroy a Su-34?

    Could a F-35 survive an intercept by a Su-27/35 or Mig-31?

Obviously the Typhoon is the better aircraft for all aspects of air to air combat – isn’t this obvious? The acceleration of the F-35 will never compete surely?

Also if it comes to a ‘dogfight’ wouldn’t you drop the droptanks. If an aircraft carries droptanks, I take it they use the fuel in those first.

I know the F-35 carries it’s weapons internally but the trade off for this is that you have increased drag when those bays are empty.

But could a Typhoon penertrate hostile airspace without being detected by radar – no, I presume?

Hence the 2 different types in the RAF – the Typhoon and F-35. 2 different aircraft for 2 different roles – comparing them is pointless.

Isn’t the PAK-FA supposed to have a ‘trainable’ gun?
