Look how fast things change? The USAF nuked two Japanese cities – 50 years later we are all driving around in Toyotas!
I think if Ukraine join Nato, we will be 1 step closer to a major war in Europe, probably over resources such as gas. Russian gas willl be as precious as Middle East Oil.
Will they use the original USAF systems or will they use any UK built systems from the HELIX upgrade?
Will they A2A refuelling, perhaps both types like E-3D?
The only reason why I say stealth is the fact that, how much of an improvement can a non-stealth airframe be over existing designs like the Su-35/S-47 and the canard Mig? And the PAK-FA must be able to counter the F-22, that must be the design intent of the aircraft.
I try not to take any sides, but see from all angles.
Isn’t the Typhoon more of a defensive aircraft with offensive capabilty as a second role. And the F-35 more of an offensive aircraft with defensive capabilty as a second role?
I don’t understand the point of comparing the 2.
I personally do believe that the program does exist, and I think it will be a ‘stealth’ based aircraft, and it will fly in 2009.
I know it us no longer the Cold War, but Russia is the only real competitor to the US, when it comes to aerspace technology. I think only they can develop an aircraft that can counter the F-22, nothing from Europe, China or India can.
Perhaps thats why the PAK-FA has taken so long, so the can develop a way to counter the F-22.
Anyway..how they have kept so secretive?..a miracle. Imagine yourself now looking at the monitor, but you are in a Sukhoi office, and the PAK-FA is on the screen – you could even take a picture of it with your mobile phone, 1 day later it could be all other the internet. What will such an employee gain?..a dose of radiation in a resturant I suppose.
If it is shrouded in total darkness, either Sukhoi have a top secret facility with extensive manufacturing and design capabiltes, that employees and minimum amount of staff, and if that is the case, it is years away from regiment level service.
Do you think if any Western secret service had any evidence of the PAK-FA, it would be released? I persoannly think so.
How many pictures of the Raptor existed on the internet before it’s first flight?
None, because there was no WWW in 1989, (when the YF-22 was born). But I have book ‘Modern Military Aircraft’ by Collins from 1995, that describes the details of the YF-22.
I just making the point that Sukhoi and RAC-MIG must have 1000s of employees, who have access to the PAK-FA project, therefore they must know what it looks like. And in this day and age when employees of almost ALL businesses have access to the internet, the security measures in place to protect the project must be very very intense.
I don’t understand the intense security?
What data is available that proves the PAK-FA exists?
I find it amazing the Russians designed and built this 5th Gen fighter, and they claim it will fly in 2009, yet noboby outside thier industry has even seen a drawing/model.
Could they have a highly secretive manufacturing facility?
That must be an amazing security intensive task. All those CAD stations, machine programmers, quality departments, buying departments, R&D offices, government buildings, airbases, must all have access to drawings/manuals/documents. Yet not one employee has leaked even a single JPEG. Yet how many people work in Sukhoi alone – 10,000.
Is there evidence that PAK-FA even exists?
Will the Rafale replace the 2000N in the nuclear strike role? Carrying 1 ASMP missile?
I was wondering why do the French retain the nuclear strike role? Becuase they would have to forward base any fighters surely?
The whole JSF programme seems a bit strange. For instance the RN are building these two supercarriers with the intention of using the F-35B, I don’t understand why the RN will be operating these two CATOBAR size carriers with an airwing of STOVL fighters and helicopters? Why not just use more carriers similar to what they have? Are they simply leaving the CATOBAR system asleep because they might use the E-2?
Also, how will the USMC launch the F-35B off the IwoJima type carriers, if they do not have skijumps? And if they can do it, then surely the F-35B could be operated from an HMS Ocean type ship, so why are the new carriers so large?
I compare them to that Russian carrier, empty deck, but they need it because the Su-33 is not STOVL!
Surely if you abort a landing on low fuel, and need to refuel, you need to climb to the tanker, that must take at good percentage of the total fuel weight of an aircraft, esp if it has bought back weapons.
These made sound like dumb points so I apologise.
Couple of questions regarding Tornado
1. What is the max low level speed of Tornado GR4 carying 6000kg, which I presume is the approx weight of 2 drop tanks, 2 AIM-9Ls and 2 1,000lb bombs?
2. What is the range on a ‘lo-lo-lo’ mission?
3. Is the max stores load 9000kg? And max take off weight 28,000kg?
4. Why does the ECR version use more powerful engines?
5. What other fighters have TF radar?
6. Will the Typhoon/F-35 use the raptor pod?
7. Does anybody have picture of the original GR1/GR4 and F3 cockpits so I can compare?
8. Is the radar designed and built in the USA? And what other aircraft use it?
Thanks
So the RAF no longer employs the Tornado as a low level strike aircraft, more of a medium altitude bomber/recon aircraft.
So let’s say it’s 2020 and the UK are about to attack a ‘rogue’ state somewhere, would it go something like this:-
1. Stormshadows take out all the ‘key’ elements, launched from F-35s 300 miles away, and flying at 40,000ft. With Typhoons performing CAP.
2. Stealth UAVs and F-35, go in undetected, and take a look, then take out anything ‘missed’.
3. Typhoons do the SEAD job using ALARMs, using data provided by the F-35s and UAVs, taking out any highly mobile threats, and deal with any fighters remaining.
4. Marines go in ‘spiking’ targets for PGMs so F-35 and UAVs can take them out.
5. CAS flown by F-35s and Apaches for remainder of war, controlled by ASTOR.
I’m not old fashoined just uneducated, with regard to military aviation
The reason why I mentioned a war with Russia was mainly due to the fact that NATO/EU seems wrapping around the Russian borders, but really a bit inmature political thinking on my part.
What is Taranis/Neuron, is that a continuation of the FOAS programme?
Thanks for your paitence.
Thanks for the answers. It seems that all airforces, except for Russia (Su-34) and China (Lepoard), do not have any in-development programmes or plans for dedicated interdictor stike aircraft. I think a war with Russia is very likley personally, espeacilly over the Crimea region – when Ukraine join NATO, the missile shield and resources, and that is when a dedicated interdictor strike aircraft would come into it’s own.
I suppose the USAF faces the same thing with regard to the F-15E. What will replace that – I take it there is going to be no F-22E Strike Raptor?
There must be point in all wars when you have to fly into heavily defended ‘zones’ to take out targets like mobile SAM launchers and mobile SSM set-ups?
I know the Su-25 is a CAS aircraft, but will the Su-34 be used for CAS also, for example using smart bombs and anti-tank weapons? The reason why I said also that it will replace Tu-22M2 is that the Su-34, I think, is the only Flanker variant that can carry external tanks – so the range must be close to that of the Backfire, and the ‘cabin’ has a toilet! – so it must be intended for substrategic missions right – kinda like an FB-111? And when you throw in SEAD, and it’s A2A ‘heritage’ it looks like the Russians will have the ultimate Tornado replacment! It must make the RAF crews jealous a bit!
How can the Storm Shadow replace the GR4, when you need the GR4 to launch it? Will it be launched from the Typhoon and F-35? And in the case of the F-35, will it comprise it’s stealth features? Or will we see Stormshadow on Airbus/Nimrod?
I would of thought the the replacment of the GR4 would be more important than the replacment of the F3. What can the Typhoon do for UK air defence that the F3 can’t. It seems that an A2A dogfight with another fighter will never happen, only in another Falklands conflict. The Typhoon was developed first and foremost as a fighter designed to engage other fighters, at short range and medium range – will this ‘design intent’ ever be used (other than exercises)?
So there is no requiremnt for a low level penetrator anymore, to take out runways, powerstations, sam sites, etc, etc? Yet there is a need for a highly capable interceptor able to meet, more than 1, Su-30 on equal terms?
It seems the Russians will have the upper hand with regard to strike – What do they ‘need’ the Su-34 for – to replace the Tu-22M2? What can it do that an upgraged Su-24/25 can’t?

How exactly does the Tornado ‘follow’ contours of the land? Does the Mirage 2000D/N, F-15E, Su-24 and Su-34 also have this?
