The same Red Tails which was generally panned by aviation enthusiasts and described by Film Citic website Rotten Tomatoes as, suffering from, “…one-dimensional characters, corny dialogue, and heaps of clichés”?

    That’s the one. Good wasn’t it. 😀

Ah I knew it all along the dog is very significant, it was the 617 mascot. Surely mascots were very important? Certainly explains the choice of code word and the highly revered and protected grave site.

Change the dog’s name at your peril film makers, very bad luck.

Just found this on pprune. Interesting opinions on here.

The tread is not too long and if you have been reading this will be worth your while.

Even here in our enlightened Antipodean society, we have the same crass stupidity:

‘Nigger Brown’ stand gone, Coon cheese next on hit-list (http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/news/queensland/nigger-brown-gone-coon-cheese-next/2008/09/26/1222217491581.html)

Personally, I believe the Government should remove Idiot Pills from the sunsidised pharmaceuticals list! 😡

    Found this:

“In 1999, the British television network ITV broadcast a censored version with each of the twelve utterances of Nigger deleted. Replying to complaints against its censorship, ITV blamed the regional broadcaster, London Weekend Television, which, in turn, blamed a junior employee as the unauthorised censor. In June 2001, when ITV re-broadcast the censored version of The Dam Busters, the Index on Censorship criticised it as “unnecessary and ridiculous” censorship breaking the continuity of the film and the story. Versions of the film edited for US television have the dog’s name altered to “Trigger”.

The name has caused some controversy with a new remake of The Dam Busters, produced by Peter Jackson. A 2009 newspaper article suggests that the name will be changed to “Nigsy” in the new film.

And we accuse other countries of re-writing history………. :ugh: :ugh:

RAAF Warrant Officer Len Waters (1924 – 1993) flew 95 missions in Kittyhawks during WWII. Len left school in grade seven, became a sheep sheared and enlisted in the RAAF intending to become a driver/mechanic but ended up a pilot.

Len was an Australian Aboriginal. He named his Kittyhawk “Black Magic”. I guess some will find that name offensive too?”

    Gud on ya cobber.

Yep charges for contactless and Oyster are the same.

There is also now a method of paying using an Apple app.

As far as I know Mr Merry, Oyster and chip are the same price both cheaper than paying individually, although you cannot do that on buses anyway. And the cap can make it very cheap.
Also the loss of an Oyster card is nothing, the loss of a debit card is a real pain.

And, of course, the bank charges are an important point.

It seems many do …apparent if you read the foregoing hundreds of posts….

I thought you said you hadn’t read them earlier, or is that what “apparently” means.

    I have read them all.

I don’t consider it that commendable. Such nit-picking really only serves to appease other nit-pickers, and often manifests itself as laughably blinkered views. Vulcan To The Sky have done a good job, but they used the wrong paint… 99% of people that saw the Vulcan fly this season will not have cared a jot, but they will have brought a lot of money into the aviation scene.

Total wrong end of stick that wasn’t the point being made!!! What was said is if it is ok to nit pick over the sort of details mentioned, and many do, then there is no reason why we cannot discuss the use of certain words in a film. Of course there are all sorts of inappropriate comparisons I could now make but I have more respect for my fellow forumites.

Again, there is that whiney victim complex coming through. Who on this forum sees political correctness as all important? This is the sort of dull, over-simplified narrative I would expect from Daily Mail columnists. I’ve never seen any individual anywhere say directly that they are upholding a standard of political correctness.

No perhaps not directly but implied by sweeping it under the carpet saying it isn’t important, many disagreed.

Indeed Charlie, but there is “that” light at the end of the tunnel (and no it’s not a train !!) for the likes of us, as you say, “nearly there” and let them get on with it.

I find a recent post offensive, not to me personally, and would suggest that the offending words are edited out please.

Yes, of course, there are ways around everything, surely that isn’t what the debate is about.

Every film is a statement and if you listen to these arts educated people, of which I am not one, they always discuss there motivation and meanings contained within the film. Nobody ever says they are just in it for the money, although at the end of the day money will be the deciding factor.

Films like this are a microcosm of British life in this country AT THAT TIME just as we can watch the old Denham studios films and see the backdrop of life then, Like Passport to Pimlico and the Lady Killers etc.

I wonder what the reaction would be if a film was made set in a souther US state back in the day and the true position wasn’t portrayed with buses and cafe depicted segregated as we don’t want to remember that part of our past.

From what little research I have done, as a result of this thread, would indicate that racism was alive and well in the 30s and 40s but wasn’t necessarily realised in this country by common people like myself.

I collected Robinson’s golliwogs and used common phrases that were derogatory to blacks back then but I don’t think that makes me a racist now or then.

What ever happened to publish and be dammed. (Yes I know)

Depict life as it was and do not paper over it, say we were wrong but that is how it was then

Guys is it possible we can stop having a go at the Mods, by all means have a go at Moggy as a normal poster, but like all the Mods they have a hard job to do walking a fine line. Personally I like Moggy’s sense of humour, if you don’t like it hit back in the same way not by making unfounded accusations about moding.

Can we please keep it civil. You have a poor argument if you have to resort to disparaging other forumites personally.

Hypo comparisons to horrific world events do not really help the argument, in my view, and will just lead to a cynical comment. Although I see the connection “denial”. But people were denied seats on buses and basic civil rights and are more relevant to the discussion.

    Just my view.

    Indeed.

A simple ‘come on boy’ aimed at the dog should suffice.

The easiest way to solve the dog problem, from the film makers point of view is to NOT name it at all. By all means have it in the film, it is a part of the story, but at no time call it by name. Simple or what? Surely a film director could have thought of that?

MISSION accomplished then, the dam problem is breached.

I did look at this thread a few times, just in case it might contain some news about the film. In fairness it does have the few odd bits, so thanks for those.

But, though even I would admit to being immature at times, I can’t believe all this BS about the dog’s name!

It’s like kids saying ‘bugg*r’ and sniggering about it. Who really cares about the dog? I was upset when it was run-over in the original film – but then I was probably aged 8 at the time. I never remembered the dog’s name, and that’s how important that aspect is to the story of the Dambusters.

Rather than banging on about the bloody dog, maybe we can either pull the plug on this thread or create a new category for those who want to snigger about rude words.

Me thinks you miss the point.

Whilst it may be considered thread drift because of the word “latest” in the title, which IIRC was added later. Some discussions have arisen over several matters related to the film and films in general. This is far from unusual in many threads and hardly merits comment unless extreme.

It is not about the dog’s name!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or sniggering about rude words. Clearly you do not understand that, although it is obvious from most of the posts which you have apparently not read . It doesn’t interest you and that’s fine you do not have to read or contribute. I notice that you make no mention of the discussion about CGI.

I agree about banging on but the problem is new people come to the thread and do not read the previous posts. I have been following this from the start but was still able to learn something I didn’t know yesterday.

I say again it is nothing to do with the dogs name or kids sniggering over words, I think that says more about how your mind sees things than what is actually being discussed here.
