Following Robbo’s excellent report on the progress with the Lancaster being restored at Le Bourget, I thought I would share with you a shot I took at Le Bourget in June 1969 depicting WU-34. Ironic that in those days a Lancaster was seen as suitable fodder for the fire dump, when years later a very long distance recovery was needed to retrieve the example now on site. Funny how values (behavioural and monetary) change over time isn’t it?
Hi Tim
I saw the remains of a Lancaster at Le Bourget in June 1971 but have recently been told it was WU-17 (ex RAF TW665), this apparently having been read off the wreck in 1967. On the basis of your info I uploaded my picture to Air-Britain as WU-34 but now I’m not so sure! The link to the picture is http://www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1209416/. Is this the same airframe and if so, how sure are you that it was in fact WU-34? Thank you for any help with this.
Tim, I assume the print to which you refer is the shot of the Lanc carrying code 45.6, which is thought to be WU-22 ex NX616 (see http://www.lancaster-archive.com/lanc_postwar-france.htm) – yet another possible identity!
I suppose we may never know the true identity, though WU-22 may be most likely. My informant is convinced that WU-17 was read off the wreck in 1967, but as these numbers were carried on the lower part of the fins I think that’s unlikely given the state of the wreckage.
Chris
Thanks Steve. That’s interesting because the note I made at the time was that it might have been a Marauder, possibly because someone told me so!
Chipmunk G-ATJK
I have a picture of ‘TJK taken at Plymouth on 3rd January 1967, which will shortly be uploaded to ABPIC (http://www.abpic.co.uk). The original slide was badly damaged by fungus etc so it has taken a while to return the image to a viewable condition! If you would like a copy please contact me at chrisengland37@gmail.com, and I will send it to you.
Hi there, I came across this old thread regarding this Auster – do you still have the frame? I’m attaching a picture I took of it at Thruxton on 19th May 1984, looking much the worse for wear after being damaged in the gale.
Just found this old thread. I think this is CASA 352L T.2B-272 delivered in to Biggin Hill just prior to the 1978 Air Fair. I photographed it on 20 May 1978 and will attempt to attach a shot of it – it may help you to confirm the ID of your picture. The RAF Museum also exhibited their Bf109E at the show.
Mea culpa!
I was the photographer of this Nord 1002 at the Trago Mills site at Stover, near Newton Abbot on 28 March 1970. How I wish I’d paid more attention – and taken more pictures! Interestingly, my log-book originally showed the c/n as being 283, which at some point I have over-written as 196. No recollection of that of course, but I was a number-collector back then, and I may have re-written history so that I could claim G-AVJS as a “cop”! I can only assume that I read the c/n off the airframe, but I regret that after all this time I can’t remember much about seeing it.
I wonder if the c/n of the Trago Mills Pingouin was really 283, and the G-AVJS connection was erroneous?
Wrong year?
Savoia Marchetti S56-B, NC194M, 15th May 1987
I saw this wonderful aeroplane fly at Duxford on 14th May 1988 during its tour of Europe. I think it had arrived either the same day or the day before, and was due to depart very shortly after I saw it. (I will be adding my pictures of it to the Air-Britain Photographic Images web site shortly – I haven’t worked out how to submit images here yet!)
So I think you probably photographed it in 1988, not 1987?
