I echo the sentiments of Mothminor. Well done for showing us.

Could anything have really been worse, scotavia? Surely the most frightful illustration ever to appear on a film poster that I have ever seen!

A very great loss to the community of aviation enthusiasts.

I’m sure that I saw one near RNAS Culdrose in about 1955 towed by a Lincoln. It was the first time I had seen either type and I didn’t know the Lincoln could be used as a tug.

I’ll clean up the model and (hopefully!) take better photographs of it and have them posted. I’d still like to know why a brass model was made of it! Perhaps we’ll never know

In answer to Supermarine305: I can see why you might think that, but only the first 5 TF1s ever had a torpedo slung underneath and they were quickly modified to B1 standard. This was long before problems arose with the long barrelled 20 mm cannon.

My opinion is that it was for an unbuilt project of the TF where 2 larger calibre weapons would be employed in its anti-shipping role. What calibre these may have been is anyones guess. I also cannot understand why this model was made of brass. I had it from JD ‘Doug’ Oughton who was involved flying most of the torpedo trials. Perhaps the model is unique!

I wonder if they give the stalling or alighting speed(s) as they do not appear in the Pilots Operating Manual.

Thank you longshot. I had attempted to do that but since a software update on Windows 10 my ability to do things I previously could has vanished!

I don’t think it is a wind tunnel model. Being an old duffer unable to use a computer properly I’ll await my son to post the photo. I can send it by normal e-mail, though.

Thank you, j Boyle but I was around (and teaching aircraft recognition) before the US Navy thought of changing the previous system which nominated the builder and the type sequence. 🙂

I disbelieved it at first as Thunderbirds is the name of the USAF aerobatic team as others have implied. The link further complicates matters by referring to them as F8U-1s !! Hint for auctioneers: AVOID AMBIGUITY!! MUST DO BETTER!!!
