OK, dumb question but how did the DH Drover reach Hampshire? (Answer probably as deck cargo?) But also – why?

There’s a thread on Cuban Aviation with pics of the Fury in the centre of Havana.

Have a look at The Nostalgia Forum on this link:

    http://forums.autosport.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=95864

There’s a picture of the Vega Gull with a racing number – did Mike hawthorn ever enter an air race?. That forum reached the same conclusion as this as to its fate.

(If the link doesn’t work type “Autosport Nostalgia Forum” into Google and then look for the thread)

Enjoying Cosford from a “Green” angle

Living 7 miles away in Wolverhampton I cycled in and there was no problem. I thoroughly recommend it.

For those unfortunate enough not to live in Wolverhampton an obvious alternative route would seem to be train, as there’s a station by the main entrance – so what did the railway company (Arriva – “transport partner”) offer? 1 train within an hour of the published finishing time. So much for “integrated transport”.

As to the police, remember it’s West Mercia, the force who seemed to think driving around at 150mph on public roads for “training” purposes was a pretty neat idea.

Actually, I thoroughly enjoyed the show, particularly the RAF “scenario” which was like Farnborough in the 1970’s with bangs and flashes.

    Two requests, though:

1 Please can somebody wipe out the idiot hang giders who spoilt the Red Arrows? I reckon directing the reheat from the Eurofighter at them should be sufficient discouragement

2 Please can somebody tell the RAF that whilst aeroplanes may be “assets” when on a balance sheet it sounds dreadful in public. Please call them aircraft!!

Is that why the similar configuration IL62 has a little clothes line prop under its tail? (Based on seeing them at Havana)

I feel like the bloke in Life on Mars – have I travelled back in time, am I mad or just on the Classic Flight Rapide from Halfpenny Green? A fantastic afternoon – the low sunlight over the Shropshire countryside, a steam train making its way along the Severn Valley Line, the Gypsy Queens throbbing smoothly away with a low note and the inside of the Rapide furnished to give a real 1950’s feel. Everybody was smiling; the pilot, the AA people on the ground, and not least the passengers. Oh, and an airport where you just arrive and walk over to the plane, get checked and you’re off. Yes, this really was back to the 1950’s.

Thanks to all at Air Atlantique Classic Flight.

If the thought of deliberately crashing planes offends, stop now.

I have a very vague memory of a film shown on Tomorrows World back in the late 60’s about rescuing pilots whose carrier takeoff had failed, which included at least one spectacular demise of a Scimitar. (Sea Hawk as well, I think). I can’t say 40 years later whether the crashes were in service or were deliberate tests. Does anybody else remember this or is it the product of an overactive childish imagination?

    that’s one pretty aircraft.

Too true. But remember that one day Senna will step off a VC10 into a Lotus 49, go flat through Eau Rouge and then depart in a Hunter F6.

and as such we would rather see a VC10 in a colourful airline livery as oppossed to a drab military colour scheme.

    Steve

I wonder if it’s just me but I think the massively understated RAF schemes look fantastic on the VC10, and look forward to seeing one hangared at Cosford. Obviously, grey appeals to me as an accountant, but the white and blue cheat and the other schemes are masterpieces of design which complement the VC10 wonderfully. To me, a RAF VC10 looks fresh even after 40 years; a USAAF 707/KC135 just looks old. The BA scheme is as fresh as a Betamax video.

End of rant, I’ll get back in me box.

Please can you enlarge the info on the Rover engine – was it related to their experimental car engines and their Rover/BRM Le Mans car? (ie 1950;s to early 1960’s?

Jeremy Clarkson wrote a great piece about them in his book ‘I Know You Got Soul’.

    Totally off thread:

Would this be the same book where Clarkson explains how the Spitfire Mark IX was successful because they enlarged the engine to 37 litres? I bought the book, it’s rubbish and I bitterly regret the £4.99. It would have been better given to Greenpeace to just annoy the man.

Beatties in Wolverhampton, late 60’s, I would guess 1967. I remember little “follow me” vans which guided the airliners into their parking places.

    Thanks for a happy memory.

Incidentally OT but there was a similar character with a “works rally Mini” which did a pre-computer simulated drive. Age around 14 I crashed it, again in Beatties toy department.
