Makes me want to play Ace Combat. Again. 😮
Assuming FBW controls etc, what are the aerodynamic issues surrounding this idea?
You mean, aside from hilariously strange looking? 😮
They managed to pull off a similar concept with the NASA oblique wing demonstrator, and it flew just fine. So I don’t see how this would be any worse.

EDIT: Well, a canted stabilizer like that might deflect the yaw force at a diagonal to the plane’s center of gravity due to it’s direction, instead of pure side to side, if you get me.
guys its the F-22A, the designation of “F/A-22” only existed in the year before it entered USAF service. No one in the USAF refers to it as “F/A-22”
This topic dates back to 2005.
Anyone know when the JASDF Phantoms and F-1s are due to fully retire from service?
Sadly, Raptor doesn’t–and it should.
Could be interesting. If/when the Raptor with TV and the Typhoon w/ Off-boresight AAM (Or any other jet with similar weaponry) go head-to-head in a mock dogfight, we could see which technology really is superior.
Personally though, I agree, and I would also love for the Typhoon to get TV just as well. 😀
You’re not talking about “Stavatti” here, are you? 😮
“Superdzhet”
Gesundheit!
What does this bird has to offer the PLAF that the J-10 doesnt give them? Why a (yet) another 4th generaton fighter design?
It’s certainly possible that they could upgrade their J-10s to this new “Super-10” spec, to make it more competitive with the other new designs on the market (F-18E, Mig-35, etc).
Anyone have access to that full Jane’s article?
I’ve seen that top picture here before, in a picture with a dude with, like, three chins. I’m sure y’all remember. 😮
I’ve heard that the development of the J-10 is going to emphasize it’s air-to-ground capability since they have the J-11B for air superiority (A classic hi-lo mix). Those concept images seem to reflect that.

Taiwan military’s stealth fighters dream
I figure it would be better to post this here than to start a new one.
Google translated from http://hi.baidu.com/liliqun/blog/item/37137bcb2759b21cbe09e698.html. It has a what-if image if a ROK fighter on the page too. The article is a year old. Also talks about other asian fighter projects.
Taiwan military’s stealth fighters dream
Taiwan’s “Vice Defense Minister” Ko Cheng Heng told the media last year said that Taiwan’s current plans to purchase 66 F-16C / D fighters and equipment is only transitional. In other words, Taiwan’s ultimate aim is to obtain the arms purchase more advanced F-35. Is the island’s media believe that once the war with the mainland, the Air Force runway is very likely serious damage to the circumstances, a vertical / short-range capability of taking off and landing F-35 on the Taiwan Air Force is very attractive. U.S. think tank, Defense Information Centre Strauss Military Reform Project Director, the former Congress of the military budget experts said Weile, F-35 suitable for ground attack, air combat capability is relatively weak. Even with the F-35, the Taiwan Air Force will not benefit from it too much. Other experts also believe that the United States, the United States do not want to “the wrath of Beijing” and fear of cross-strait reunification after the advanced fighter technology transfer to the mainland, Taiwan finally be the possibility of F-35 low.
However, in recent years repeatedly rebuffed fighter procurement plan at the same time, Taiwan’s next generation fighter planes since the research programme is conducted in secret. According to Canada in 2006, “Han and defense comments” report, Taiwan has been in stealth fighters paint has been made a breakthrough. November 27, 2006, “Xiangsheng” fighter (IDF improved, after changed its name to “Eagle”) first public test flight when one code-named “Black Wolves” of the Taiwan military’s stealth aircraft inadvertently become a pilot Outside the focus of attention. In fact, Taiwan’s armed forces since 1995, began a stealth technology development, and the plan named “Lushan plan.” However, due to the “CAS” has failed to satisfactory results, the whole scheme has been no progress. In view of this, Taiwan’s armed forces also began in 2004 called “Black Wolves” stealth plan by the island’s major aircraft manufacturers AIDC companies.
According to participate in the scheme of a technical staff to the “Taiwan Strait military situation” – that the core of the project is known as a dielectric coating of absorbing the development, at present, only the United States and Britain have the technology. With countries around the world commonly used by the invisible magnetic coating compared Dielectric coatings with light weight, high chemical stability, high heat resistance and absorbing the advantages of greater bandwidth. Nearly three years, the Taiwan Air Force to the Chingchuankang in Taichung base for the test site, under conditions of strict confidentiality, AIDC companies for 0825 a number of AT-3 jet trainer aircraft as a platform for stealth test 40 times The test flight. It is said that the use of such paint coating machines after all, AT-3 contacts increased by only 140 kilograms, was found to detect distance from 35 knots to 20 knots and this means that the clock aerial combat aircraft were detected in Taiwan’s armed forces The time will be postponed to 44 seconds. Taiwan’s armed forces that wait until the technology is mature, will be applied to the “Eagle” fighter, as well as Taiwan’s other weapons and equipment.
Hard to read through the babelfish speak, but it talks about a future indigenous ROKAF stealth fighter. Anything else know anything about it or is this just idle speculation?
Thats the 3 Mirage 2000 sq, 3 MiG-29 Sq, and probably 3 Jag squadrons. All these will have to be replaced by the MCA.
The MCA project is still ongoing?
Star puts it in a strange way, but he is right.

😀 …anyway, this whole debacle kind of reminds me of the Colombian border crisis not too long ago. Fifteen minutes of hype for what turns out to be nothing. Wonder if that’s the same that’s gonna happen with this one?
More importantly, I really DO wonder if the USAF is secretly praying for this to happen.
Pesonally, I think the Gripen NG will run out of steam but like the F-20 did vs the F-16………….As I see no advantges over current types like the F-16C Blk 50’s & 60’s and its totally outclassed my the forthcoming F-35A.
Truthfully I think it would be the other way around. The F-20 was a capable design, yet it’s airframe was essentially at the end of it’s growth period at the time, while the F-16 was brand new and hadn’t even begun to flesh itself out yet. I see the the Gripen and F-16 having a similar relationship here. They may be comparable now but the Gripen is brand new, just like the F-16 was back then.
Though I admit, it wont be as extreme as it was back then thanks to the miniaturization of technology since the days of the F-20. I really see the Gripen and F-16 flying side-by-side for a very long time. And true, the F-16 is already well-rooted around the world and there will be high demand to keep them going. Some will upgrade, some will buy new. But I don’t think the Gripen will fade from history like the F-20 did (which is a damn pity, btw) I think the Gripen has the potential to become a nice middle-ground between an upgrade of a worn F-16 fleet (they’re getting old, ya?) and a brand new F-35, as well as a capable (and, I’m guessing, cheaper?) alternative to buying new F-16s.
It would have been REALLY nice if the Gripen could have removed it’s political burden, but it uses a US engine and I think BAE has a stake in it too, so the political factor in in there too.
EDIT: And I think there were ideas floating around for a stealthified gripen if I recall…
Also, I really like that ATD-X, is it a real and viable project? Is it true that it may become the F-36, or is that just a bunch of speculation?
The ATD-X Shinshin project is still going from last I remember, but a lot of funding was cut from the program; it’s been a while since there was any news about it. It still seems to have more life than the Korean KFX project though, so that says something, I guess. The airplane itself (if you’ve seen the mockup) is just a testbed aircraft to see if it’s viable for Japan to make their own 5G fighter. As long as it at least flies I’ll be happy. Cause that means it will make an appearance in the next Ace Combat game. :p
Rumor says it will have it’s first flight (IF it flies) on June 14, 2016 if Wikipedia is to believed…
But what do you mean, “F-36”? Are you referring to US assistance in the program? I think I heard a rumor about that too; Lockheed, I think it was. Cant think of the source of that rumor though. I know the French had a hand in it though…
EDIT: http://abductionpolitics.net/2007/08/30/japans-future-fighters/ A year old, but lotsa shiny pictures. Interesting; looking at the mockup, the cockpit looks like it was originally a twin-seater but the rear seat was faired over.
Well it CANT be worse than that movie Stealth.
…can it?
Yes yes but cue on the fanboys talking about how one F-22 can take out 57 regiments of Backfires and their cousins. . . or what not. . .
Speaking of which, wouldn’t that be interesting if they would end up stationing some Su-35BMs or even some PAK FAs in cuba to support the bombers?
