And it continued saying if the Bear is going down then the pilots would have no choice but to jump out of the plane through the doors!!!

If the Bear is going down…it wont **;)

    * *Adapted from :
Defence Minister Peter MacKay brushed off the safety issue when he was asked last summer what would happen if the F-35’s single engine failed on patrol in the Far North. “It won’t,” he replied

Cooling down in progress which is good…

India plays down differences with UK, calls ties ‘mutually beneficial’

Foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said relations between India and the UK are warm and friendly and have stood the test of time. “India appreciates cooperation extended by UK in a number of areas, which have contributed to India’s overall development efforts, particularly through capacity building, exchange of best practices, knowledge sharing and sharing of technology and technical expertise,” he said.

“The bilateral cooperation between India and UK has been and remains mutually beneficial,” he added.

When asked for response to reports in the British media that India’s didn’t want aid from the UK, government sources had said earlier this week that India was appreciative of efforts to provide aid. “There are niche areas where we require assistance and we have always been appreciative of efforts to provide that assistance,” said an official.

The Rafale’s long flight to India

    From the col.
    Good read.

    Some excerpts:

In the second half of 2008, the IAF conducted a technical evaluating of these bids, to see whether the bids conformed to the RfP. What should have been an innocuous process turned dramatic when Dassault’s bid was reportedly rejected as incomplete. While this was quickly resolved by diplomatic intervention, reportedly by President Sarkozy himself, other companies are now saying that the Rafale was done a favour by being allowed back into the contest.

It was the next stage of evaluation — flight trials — that has established the IAF’s testing process in a league of its own. Conducted by the Directorate of Air Staff Requirements (ASR), and overseen by the quiet and unflappable Air Commodore (now Air Vice Marshal) RK Dhir, each of the six contenders were flight tested by IAF pilots who tested 660 separate performance aspects of each contender aircraft. For example, the RfP demanded that the fighter’s engine should be replaced within one hour. The maintenance teams actually made each contender do that. If the IAF demanded a “sustained turn rate” (the quickness with which a fighter can turn around in the air) of 24 degrees per second, each fighter was physically put through this manoeuvre to establish that it met this requirement. (Incidentally, both the American fighters failed to meet the IAF’s “sustained turn rate” requirements)

Air Marshal Barbora, who oversaw the flight evaluation process as the IAF vice chief, recounts how six teams of IAF pilots, flight engineers and maintenance staff were mustered, one for each fighter that was trial evaluated. Each pilot began by learning to fly the fighter he would evaluate, while the flight engineers and maintenance staff learned the technical ropes. The IAF pilots physically flew each of the contending fighters, albeit with a “home” pilot in the second seat. This was the first time that any air force has been allowed to conduct such a fly-off.

Says Air Marshal (Retired) Padamjit Singh Ahluwalia, who brought in the first Mirage 2000s to India, says, “Russian fighters like the MiG-29 are great for air shows but serviceability is often a problem. When you get airborne, the radar often becomes unserviceable… sometimes this happens between two sorties. The result is very low serviceability rates.”

Just to add: I think the US knew that its fighters would not be able to qualify the ASR’s or compete with eurobirds.Their mission was more diplomatic than technical. Thats why the US ambassador resigned a day after their elimination.

So that makes 6 successful interceptions out of 7 right?

Good to know about the integrated EW system.I hope that includes CMDS too.
That will prevent incidents like what happened to Rajiv Pundir.
I once watched an interview of ACM Tipnis where he said that there was a 4 ship formation of Mi 17s and that only Pundir’s helo didnt have any cmds…he also said that (iirc) “there was no business sending that helo into action”.But these words cannot compensate for the loss of these men.

What do we have here now …

Gerald Howarth, the UK’s Minister for International Security Strategy, who comes to India days after French company, Dassault, emerged the lowest bidder in the $15-20 billion Indian medium fighter competition, tells Business Standard that “disappointed” Eurofighter will put in a fresh bid that will be a “winning financial proposal.”

since HAL is now building some of the Sukhois, can’t they just build some of the spare parts in question?

There lies the fun  part..the Russians did not give us the license to manufacture spares including tyres although we can do it[actually there was a clause in the main contract exclusively prohibiting the manufacture of spares in house].It seems selling of spares is the main lucrative business spanning the entire service life of these birds.

Yup thats a Styx launch the tailfin is quite identifiable.

Thanks Wanshan and Jonesy for confirmation.
Btw ..since they are supposedly testing the interception of the Styx with Barak..so I guess they fired that styx in a general direction and not at a ship? Also I hope it didnt have an warhead?

There could be some MKIzation of components..of the top of my head the IFF , communications equipment , datalink ..there are a few other Indian components which can be thought of..but the original equipment is top of the line and are integrated so well ..so I wouldnt want to mess with it..;)

    Among the payloads..
I think its going to be Litening not Damocles

AM 39 – I am not sure.Currently and in the near future , IAF antiship options will include the Kh 31 and Brahmos (within a few years) where as the navy have Kh 35 (Il 38 and Mig 29 K) Kh 31 Mig 29K, harpoon (P 8I).I think the IAF would like to have a non Russian antiship option…so Harpoon might have to be integrated if they didnt go for AM 39.

Antiradiation missile-aagain which type..currently operational are Kh 31P (Su 30) and Kh 25 MP from the Mig 27s..I am sure IAF wouldnt want those in the rafale..so what are the options? I am not sure whether AGM 88 is available or that IAF is interested in that.

And apart from that IAF might want the following munitions integrated namely crystal maze , Griffin and Paveway LGBs , and later Astra missile [although I suspect that would primarily replace the RVVs]

I thought that was styx too, but Shiv Aroor tweeted labelling it as Barak

It also could be a Lakshya PTA or Mirach .it was the target of Barak interception.

Here’s the IN statement on Tropex 2012

Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony was given a glimpse of the expansive scope and scale of the Indian Navy’s annual Theatre Level Readiness and Operational Exercise (TROPEX) over a two day visit to the Bay of Bengal with the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nirmal Verma and the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command Vice Admiral AK Chopra.

In the backdrop, were two completely networked fleets, widely dispersed across seas in the Indian Ocean, operating in a dense electronic environment to match their professional and technical proficiency. New platforms, weapons sensors, communication systems and tactics were being tested and tried to optimize the net combat power of the fleets. Over forty surface combatants of various classes, submarines and a large number of aircraft including UAVs are participating in the exercise. As would be the case in any operation of the twenty first century, the exercise had a jointmanship element as IAF aircraft such as AWACS, Sukhois, Mirages and Jaguars also participated.

‘No Limits’, the motto of INS Shivalik where the Defence Minister first landed, best described the scale of the Indian Naval operational exercise. The Defence Minister witnessed INS Shivalik execute, various evolutions including a ‘surface gun shoot’ and jackstay with INS Shakti in copy book fashion. Incidentally, it may be recalled that the Defence Minister had commissioned INS Shivalik on Apr 29, 2010 and Admiral Verma had commissioned INS Shakti on October 01, 2011. The integration of INS Shivalik and INS Shakti as fully operational components of the Eastern Fleet in such a short span of time reflected the efficiency and professionalism of Indian Navy’s training and operational methodology.

INS Viraat, the Flag ship of the Western Fleet, demonstrated the power of a networked force as operational plots and pictures from remote sensors were transferred and collated in a flash to present a comprehensive picture of the Battlespace and effect optimal use of the weapons on board the various potent ships. The recently upgraded Sea Harriers proved their lethality with ranges extended by Air to Air refueling and BVR missiles. Su 30MKI aircraft, Mirages and Jaguars, being directed by an IAF AWACS, operating over sea for the first time tested the Air Defence capability of the INS Viraat even as the ships were operating in a Multi- threat scenario. During this battle the Defence Minister witnessed, first hand, the potency of the upgraded Sea Harriers particularly in the networked environment.😉

A critical part of Anti Missile Defence being Surface to Air Missiles (SAM), the Defence Minister witnessed the successful interception of a fast, low flying, Surface to Surface missile[The Styx from the photo probably] by a SAM. A clear night with a full moon laid an idyllic setting for this demonstration of power and professionalism.

The Defence Minister witnessed a successful and impressive launch of the Brahmos, supersonic long range anti shipping missile, from a recently up-graded Ranvir class destroyer. This was particularly satisfying as the launch of the missile was an affirmation of our indigenous weapon capabilities.

The Defence Minister also witnessed a full scale air power demonstration from INS Viraat with Seakings, Sea Harriers and Chetaks participating. Whilst on board INS Viraat, Shri Antony was also shown the reputed professionalism of the MARCOS as they carried out a precision landing on the flight deck in the middle of the sea using Combat Free Fall technique
