This is just for training right?
IL 76 TD is operated from capetown to Novo Runway by a pvt. co ALCI used by the Indian station Maitri and also some others.
There are still no details as to what would be the Indian “50 percent” contribution in FGFA, IAF as usual doesn’t do much talking, and by HAL’s relative silence on this, we can assume they haven’t worked out serious stuff yet.
From the same report by Ajai Shukla which I linked earlier ,
India’s work-share for the joint fighter programme, according to HAL officials, will amount to about 30% of the overall design effort. This will centre on composite components and high-end electronics like the mission computer, avionics, cockpit displays and the electronic warfare systems. Additionally, India will have to redesign the single-seat PAK-FA into the two-seater fighter that the IAF prefers. Like the Sukhoi-30MKI, IAF prefers one pilot flying and the other handling sensors, networks and weaponry.
Also about agreements and stuff:
14.06.2011
PAK FA has demonstrated its performance of the delegation of the Ministry of Defence of IndiaMoscow, June 14. Today at the airport Flight Research Institute. Gromov in Zhukovsky near Moscow was presented and flight demonstration of promising air complex tactical aircraft (PAK FA) of the Indian delegation headed by the Secretary for Defence Production, the Deputy Minister of Defence of India RK Singh (RK Singh). On the Russian side the event was attended by President of the United Aircraft Corporation, General Director of Sukhoi and MiG, “Mikhail Pogosyan. At the end of May with the aircraft commander of the Indian Air Force got to know Pradeep Vasant Naik (Pradeep Vasant Naik) and his entourage.
Russian-Indian program to develop advanced, multi-purpose fighter (MIT) – the largest project in the field of military technical cooperation between the two countries. Work for its implementation shall be based on a signed 18 October 2007 in Moscow at the 7 th session of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on military-technical cooperation agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of India on cooperation in the development and production of promising multipurpose fighter.
In December 2010 during the visit of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to India by Rosoboronexport, the company Hindustan Aeronautiks Limited (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) and Sukhoi signed a contract to develop a sketch and technical project aircraft. This – the first of a series of documents governing the obligations of the parties at different stages of the program. MIT will be developed on the basis of the Indian delegation presented today PAK FA, which has successfully test is carried out by Sukhoi. Two prototypes have made about 70 flights.
Nothing.
However it seems India is serious about putting money into the program, and Russia is keen to include India in the project. So I think Indian participation will clear up through 2012.
How can you be so sure?India will buy 50 single seaters (PAKFA) and each at a supposed cost of 100 mn $$ , that alone makes a amount of 5 billion. How can you say that some part of it has not been paid already as development costs?
And about the supposedly two seater FGFA ..here are the finances..
HAL Chairman Ashok Nayak had indicated to Business Standard on a recent visit to HAL, Bangalore, that the deal was done. “It is in the system for approval,” said Nayak. “The respective work shares have been agreed to by both sides and once we sign the preliminary design contract, we will finish the design in about 18 months. Developing and building the fighter could take 8-10 years, and each side will pay $6 billion as its share.”
The Russian and Indian Air Forces each plan to build around 250 fighters, at an estimated cost of $100 million each. That adds up to $25 billion, over and above the development cost.

Aha! I think I said this could be a possibility…;)
India to buy more than 16 C-17 airlifters
Reliable sources, however, say the IAF could opt for eight more aircraft, in which case the deal for the C-17s could touch about $10 billion or so.
That would make a total of 24 C 17s…looks like IAF took the spares issue seriously..
Expensive , but there cant be a better replacement for the Il 76..

In other news ..
Pilatus PC-7 Mk-II may be IAF’s choice for $1bn trainer aircraft deal
According to defence sources, the technical evaluation round came to an end in May this year. Financial evaluation commenced soon thereafter and the Pilatus PCT has apparently offered the lowest bid amongst the three.
You mean Ukrainian transports. 😉
I hope so 😉 but Ilyushin is not doing the waltz with us either…
Jag engine upgrade finally on??
India to do $2 bn deal for Jaguar engines from single vendor
IAF’s Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal P V Naik told India Strategic defence magazine (http://www.indiastrategic.in) in an interview that the Jaguars needed urgent upgrades, and that as there was still considerable life left in the airframes and systems, it was necessary to go ahead with the process as fast as possible.
Air Chief Marshal Naik said that the government had now decided to process the case on the “single vendor” basis keeping in view what is available, and most suited, and negotiate with the selected manufacturer.
IAF has nearly 125 twin-engine Jaguars, dubbed as Deep Penetration Strike Aircraft (DPSA) for ground attack role when the deal was initially signed. The aircraft can carry nuclear weapons.
Upgrades of the IAF Jaguars would also include modernisation of avionics, sensors for night operations, and integration of helmet mounted sights for the pilots.
The deal for new engines, 250-plus, inclusive of spares, should be worth more than $ 2 billion.
Awww.. this thread got hotdogged!!:eek:
Link to last thread
so why no glass cockpit on ugpraded An-32s?
Well that is a good question .Earlier it was reported that the upgrade will consist of glass cockpit like this:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_o_no4M2xEPY/SkIN46y5jOI/AAAAAAAAHIA/dsiSNyfkpfc/s1600-h/35421.jpg
Now there are two types of An 32 mods:
The AN-32Б-100 is the new variant of the AN-32Б aircraft has been developed in the result of the aircraft modernization. The new modification differs its predecessor by:
take-off weight increased up to 28.5 tons, and payload increased up to 7.5 tons;
installation of modified engine and its overrating mode control system;
mounting of АИ-20Д engines series 5M with increased life to the 1st overhaul, life between overhauls increased up to 4000 hours and assigned service life increased up to 20000 hours.
On the basis of the AN-32 military-transport aircraft is offered the deeper modification the AN-32B-200 variant. Besides the advantages of the AN-32Б-100 the new aircraft obtains:
up-to-date cockpit for two-pilot crew with digital airborne electronic system of the Collins type;
more airdropping-transport possibilities;
additional easy-removable tanks with total fuel capacity up to 3000 l, mounted at the fuselage external side, allow to increase the flight range up to 3200 km;
improved system of on-condition maintenance.

So it seems like IAF went for the An 32B -100 modification.Although there are few reports mentioning the presence of mfds in the cockpit..I cant see any.
So I gues IAF didnt want to throw much money on the upgrade.
Also consider that its been almost 30 years since the earliest An 32s entered Indian service. I have a feeling that in coming years IAF is going to order much more of its transports from US and gradually phase out all Russian types apart from inducting the HAL – UAC Il 214 MTA whenever that happens….
Steel cutting for IAC-2 will most likely start after Navy has gained some experience on STOBAR carriers. Even if we assume 2014-15 period for initiation of steel cutting, considering the IAC-1 speed of construction, increased complexity and larger size of the CATOBAR ship, the ship will most likely hit water by 2023 and be ready for induction at 2025. By 2025, IN will have the option of choosing AMCA (if its ready) or naval PAK-FA (if its ready) for induction. Hence i consider naval MMRCA to be highly unlikely.
I agree. But that does not fully explain the IN RFI sent to Lockheed , Boeing , Saab etc.
From what I can make out , it seems that originally there were plans to have mmrca from IAC 2 which was to be laid down for construction from mid 2011 according to various sources and which was to be conventional CATOBAR.
However , IN is now looking at maybe a larger ship than originally planned IAC 2 with other newer generation technologies like EM cats , carrier operated awacs etc.Also it would help to have the IAC -1 construction complete.Plus the admiral saying that funds were being diverted to other purposes and that for the time being there are only 2 carriers for 2 CBGs. So that again makes the RFI for the mmrca redundant. So it looks that the IN is having a “pause” moment with respect to the IAC -2 and for good.
Because having a 5th generation aircraft to operate from the new carrier is the way to go rather than naval versions of currnet mmrca.
Apart from this , the other motive of this RFI can be to see the availability of the F 35 which can operate from the IAC 1 at a later date.And LM also reportedly responded to that RFI with the F -35.
Why even consider a third type for the navy? Wouldn’t Ks and NLCA be sufficient to meet the naval requirements?
Well the Mig 29 + NLCA are for the Gorshkov and the IAC 1 which is STOBAR and due to be commissioned in 2014 timeframe. IAC – 2 is supposedly going to be CATOBAR and the IN requires new birds to operate from there.And maybe some F 35 Bs to operate from the STOBAR carrier later?
What :confused: I love dhoklas!:)
Tale of an PoW during 71 war…
Smart air force would never reveal their best hand. The Indians easily beat the U.S. in COPE India 2004, but at the same time they reveal their clever tactics and combat radar emission characteristics. They realized they made a mistake in doing so, and in following exercises they set their Su radars/avionics to “Training Mode”, and use very basic tactics. It’s better to “lose” then reveal your military secrets.
Wrong.
IAF is not that stupid my friend.
I suppose modern fuel tanks are very expensive, but are they planned to be dropped in case of dangerous wartime missions or are they supposed to be carried throught unless a case of real emergency?
Nic
Fuel tanks are expensive , but not more expensive than the aircraft , the pilot or the mission[say CAP]. People tend to drop their tanks whenever the RWR is pinged by a bogey or they get a hostile radar contact.Exception to this can be if the aircraft is far away and you dont want to engage.
In other cases there is no need to drop a tank unless preplanned eg. before entering a highly defended area in sead/dead or ground attack missions.
