Whatever Ashley Tellis might say , in addition to technical eval , I think US rigidity with cismoa , tot for important systems like aesa etc. , the “political strings” and the perception of being an unreliable arms supplier all played a role.
Ok.But passive homing has been introduced previously by the R 27 P.But this is useless against LPI aesa radars which are becoming common now.
Once intergration of the SD10 is complete the JF17 will have a passive BVR engagement capability since the PL12 on which the SD10 is based has had a passive homing mode since inception.
It will require the target a/c to be actively emitting, so is not quite as flexible as the MiCA-IR, but will have a significant range advantage over the MICA.
I dont understand what you mean by “passive BVR engagement capacity”.If you are talking about HOJ then the idea is not correct because in that case the missile seeker is still active. What is this about the target having to emit actively:confused:
The main advantage of Mica IR is that its seeker being IR is passive plus it has got the LOAL with midcourse updates too which other bvr IR missiles (like R 27 T /ET) most probably doesnt have. And most importantly It cn be used with the OSF.
unlike that Mi-28 in India or wherever it is.
You know , that previous picture looks like taken at Jaisalmer AFS.
rayrubik, it’s our old BSmaster prasun sengupta saying it’s israeli, we know what his credibility is. arudhra is a separate program from the radars ordered from israel.
Yeah I think you are correct. Its not 2084.Its separate.I remember once chorgupta claimed Rohini is based on TRS 19 but actually it was completely the opposite with PIT borrowing antenna from DRDO 😀
There is some confusion about this radar.
Some sources say its from LRDE and some say an Israeli origin.
Now from Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence Report – May 2010
it said we were acquiring 15 medium power radars from Israel and 8 from DRDO.
Now I have not been able to identify which Israeli (Rafael ? ELta?) radar we are acquiring:confused: and also not been able to find anything regarding the origins of Arudhra from any israeli source.
Here is another picture from Outlook
Excellent article on P 17 frigates.

Great news on both the missiles! 😎
Lack of maneuverability ? seriously ? Why is Gripen out then ? IAF sure does train hard in wvr but i doubt if they would have given wvr performance preference over bvr. With all due respect to ashley tellis, i would prefer the diplomatic neutrality argument over this argument anyday.
I haven’t read the original article , but a few reports based on that article and I felt that the Tellis article focuses only on a few parameters where the US aircraft were disadvantaged and those parameters may not necessarily be very important in the bigger scheme of things, but actually there were over 600 parameters on which all the aircraft were judged. So the Ashley Tellis report feels very incomplete and in no way paints the original picture…perhaps intentionally.
Antonov hands over first upgraded An-32s to India news
The upgraded An-32s have updated equipment including air collision avoidance systems, ground proximity warning systems, satellite navigation, distance measuring equipment, upgraded radio altimeters, new radars with multifunctional indicators, new oxygen systems and improved crew seats.
First batch of Indian Air Force An-32s upgraded in Ukraine leaves for India
Ukrspecexport state-run company told Interfax-Ukraine that first five ungraded planes have left for Kanpur (North India) from India. It is expected that the planes will arrive to India in 5-6 days.
Equipment to develop aircraft repair facilities in India was also shipped along with the aircraft.
“The contract is being realized according to schedule. India highly appreciates the quality of the work done by Ukrainian companies and new flying characteristics of upgraded An-32 aircraft,” the company told Interfax-Ukraine.
By late 2011 another ten An-32 aircraft will be delivered to the customer, the company said.
The acceptance document for the first batch was signed by India on May 18.
The contract, worth some $400 million, involves repairing and modernizing 103 An-32 aircraft of Indian Air Force. It was signed in July 2009 between the Indian Air Force and Spectechnoexport, which won a respective tender announced in December 2007. Ukraine’s Antonov Plant and Civil Aviation Plant 410 are executing the contract.
According to the contract, 40 airplanes are to be modernized in Ukraine and the rest of aircraft at the BRD-1 aviation plant of the Indian Air Force in Kanpur (North India).
As a part of the upgrade, the Indian aircraft will be fitted with around 25 types of modern equipment made in Ukraine and other countries. The equipment increases flight safety.
The upgraded An-32 will be able to land according to the ICAO category II approach. Fuel consumption and the mass of the empty upgraded aircraft will be lower compared to the basic model.
In addition, in line with a three-year contract worth $110 million signed in December 2009 by OJSC Motor Sich (Zaporizhia) and the Indian Air Force, the AI-20 engines of the Indian An-32s are to be upgraded.
Another report ..russian source this time..
During the talks held during the visit of an Indian military delegation to Moscow headed by the commander of the Air Force Pradeep Vasant Naik, the Russian side confirmed its readiness in conjunction with the Indians to develop a new lightweight fifth-generation fighter, which will meet the specific requirements of the Indian Air Force” – the report says Internet portal.

…………
medal64..I think if this happens it will be similar to FGFA…Indian mod for Russian a/c.Raises questions about the future of Indian AMCA though…
btw it says development of light fighter for IAF ( and export )..do Russia have any plans for a fifth gen light fighter as a replacemnet for the various types in russian service?
After pakfa , F 35 analogue for IAF??
Besides the common heavier platform, Russia has also agreed to jointly develop a lighter fifth generation fighter tailored to meet specific requirements of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
