So integrate non-French weapons, and take other upgrade paths (e.g. Selex/Saab swash-plate radar) if the Thales option doesn´t offer cost/performance per India´s needs. That´s the point of having source codes and full tech transfer. Obviously, Thales will have rather good chances on selling it`s own upgrade path, at least in it`s majority, but there isn`t a 100% corellation and India will have free choice there.

And sure… Eurofighter upgrade costs will be SOOO cheap compared to Rafale.

Well the shenanigans of Dassault (or is it the French Govt?) in upgrading the M2Ks will certainly be taken into account before any deal for Rafale is considered.Plus French weapons by all accounts are quite expensive.Although in case of meteor that wouldnt happen I guess. But for all others like scalp or aasm that could be a problem.Interestingly enough IAF managed to make the IAF M2Ks compatible with the R 27 , it is not known whether it is for economic reasons or due to unsatisfactory performance of the super 530Ds , and most probably that happened with minimal/no input from the oem.
So to mitigate the risk , IAF “should” ask for ability to integrate weapons of IAF’s choice ..maybe like crystal maze , sudarshan LGBs or astra missile with FULL oem support.

Ofcourse signing any agreements will take into account guarantees from the manufacturer either for incremental addition of new capabilities and/or pathway for future upgrades with financial and other penalties attached to non-deliverence.No one can rule out all the risks though in selecting a bird with “to be added” capability versus existing capability.

These are again the main points in favour of rafale including existing aesa capability which was reportedly demoed to the IAF and the ability to fire the scalp.

IAF chief talks about the mmrca select..

Debrief Conveyed To All Vendors About Their Performance In Flight Evaluations : Air Chief
‘The debrief (on compliance in flight evaluations) were conveyed to the vendors when the test was over. Everybody knows if they are compliant or not and they have been conveyed individually about it,’ the Indian Air Force (IAF) chief, Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik, told reporters here.

He was asked if there were any complaints from the unsuccessful vendors since India had down-selected European consortium EADS Cassidian’s Eurofighter Typhoon and French Dassault’s Rafale to continue in the race, which is expected to be over by March 2012.

‘As far as satisfied or dis-satisfied is concerned, when you select one aircraft, it always happens that other people are dissatisfied. There is nothing wrong with our selection process. It is only a human feeling,’ Naik said when asked about the deep disappointment that the US has expressed over the rejection of their two aircraft that were in the fray.

‘We selected the best and it so turned out that they are European planes,’ Naik said. He said the IAF had done their job on evaluating the six contenders for the MMRCA and now it was for the government to select the lowest bidder in the tender, which was being done according to the defence procurement procedure.

The area in question is pretty inaccessible and is right now getting drenched in sleet and snow. They might have used the Litening targeting pod to scan a large area and identified the wreckage.

Typhoon was always intended to be a multi role aircraft, although as you correctly point out it was not intended to be a Tornado replacement, it was however intended as a jaguar replacement.

I dont know what you are trying to prove by that , but the reality is that the typhoon as we see it today is hardly anywhere near to being a jaguar replacement.

Nope, his house was less than 700 meters from the academy.

    Yeah.
Maybe he was recieving regular dialysis from the adjacent Kakul military hospital for his end stage renal disease.

didn’t really know crash frequency was so high, is it down to inexperience?

The other two times aren’t really crashes. In the first case the plane careened off the runway due to the inadvertent opening of the cockpit [pilot error], and the second time there was most probably burst tyre on landing or error in coordination between the two pilots. So thats not problem with the aircraft. Both the times the aircraft were restored. So they were incidents but not which puts a qustion mark on the bird.

However this crash needs to be taken very seriously as it resulted in total loss of the airframe. This crash its being said maybe due to performing of “unintended maneuvre”…probably meaning a stall or spin from which the aircraft did not recover meaning a aerodynamic issue could be present.

Earlier Ajai Shukla had reported that the Sitara is going to enter a risky and crucuial phase of its flight testing with spin recovery tests so maybe it couldnt recover from a spin.

So..come on lets have some price estimates for the two aircraft..
Rafale 63 mil euro vs typhoon 90 mil as reported??

90 million euro for a typhoon!! Thats almost the price of a F 35! That is just too much! What was the unit cost in austrian and saudi deals?
63 million for a rafale is reasonable enough imo.

But then again comes the crucial aspect of the offsets. If eurofighter provides better offsets the final net cost per unit can be much lower than the quoted value.
