So what can India offer quickly for SL? prototype LCA??
    Nothing… Hahahaha…

Its not that India cannot provide better systems. The decision to provide Indra II was a political decision. And Indra II is just a low level gapfiller radar and not a high end air-surveillance system. You cant expect to have 100% air coverage 100% of the time by just deploying one low level gapfiller radar.

However the point of relevance here is that even that radar was switched off.

    So stop killing strawmen.

Although it should be said that the Indra II is extremely popular with the IAF and the IA,but they use it as a gapfiller just as it should be,and not as the centre node point of your ADS.

    Breakthrough!
    Golden News Service

An experiment done in SL by the LTTE has cleared out the misconception on 2D radars.Contrary to what has been the popular belief,2D radars dont work. The experiment shows that a flying aircraft cannot be detected only in range and azimuth unless the altitude is detected as well.Furthermore it has been observed that 2D radars cannot detect any aircraft when they are switched off!

This study has been dubbed a “breakthrough” by terrorist organisations all throughout the world. On the other hand it has placed the various governments under pressure to secure their airspace.A official from the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry who wanted to remain anonymous said that the military is now considering replacing all its 2D radars with radars of upto 9-10D.

1 ) In which year did the SS-N-25/Kh-35 entered Soviet Naval service ?

I am not fully sure but I think the Uran first came into service on the Neustrashimy class frigates. That would be 1993-94.

Tomahawks were recovered in Pakistan not China.

What does that statement imply? So nothing can go from Pakistan to China because Pakistan and China are separated by an insurmountable obstacle called the Himalayas right?

After history lessons on the Plassey, lets have some geography lessons too from your credible book..shall we?:p

I guess one could find various reports and articles in support of sealordlawrence’s posts.

Only thing is that would’nt be relevant here.
    So SOC..[thumbs up icon].

just ignoring sealordlawrence, that way we can have a sensible discussion, otherwise it will just end up locking the thread.

The idea that Pakistan today is a failed state, with a rapidly growing GDP that last year surpassed India’s, is basically a joke.

Huh!You are criticising sealordlawrence and in the same post you had to make this BS statement.

world bank data for PAK for 2005.

    GDP US$ 110.7 billion
    GDP growth (annual %) 7.8

    for India 2005

    GDP US $ 785.5 billion
    GDP growth (annual %) 8.5

The radar was repeatedly down for repairs.

The SL Gov has issued statements already saying that news report was wrong.Period.

btw..earlier(before it was reported that it had already been repaired but offline) you said..

People actually saw the LTTE plane coming and yet the radar cannot be made usable.

ROFL!So you thought that after the radar was been taken down for repairs, they see a plane coming and all they need to do in the space of 2-3 mins is to turn on a switch to make it usable again!

Repeating the newspapers’ account that it’s a bad piece of equipment is a “flame”?

Hmm..so lets see..so you originally said:

No matter how you slice it, it’s bad piece of equipment.

So you were repeating a newspapers account, and hey I was doing it too.But you said I was “slicing it”??By quoting another newspapers account?Where as your reports credibility is beyond question.Anything else? Some golden pieces of wisdom from the credible history book from where you studied the Battle of Plassey perhaps?:p

By issuing verdict like statements like you did above, you are just trying to flame, nothing else.

If it were working properly and online then it would not have been mentioned.

I thought if it were online and still not been able to detect the a/c it should have been mentioned as the radars fault.

It’s very natural to turn off your radar at night when you most need a radar and during time of war?

    .
The report is there.Radar was offline.See joey’s post.
Btw..why did the Israeli corvette get struck by the silkworm again? It was probably because it was peacetime and the Israelis were playing football with the Hizbullah.:diablo:

F H Major takes over as new Air Force chief

    March 31, 2007

Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major took over as the new chief of the Indian Air Force from the present incumbent S P Tyagi, who retired on Saturday.

In a message, Air Chief Marshal F H Major said, “It must be remembered that in our march of progress, we must remain in line with national goals and in concert with the other services.”

He said the air warriors, ‘must work towards transforming the IAF into an aerospace force, for it is only through the employment of space based applications that we can be more effective beyond our shores.’

The new Air Chief said hardware provides capabilities, but it is the people who can give us the ‘winning edge.’

Born on May 29, 1947, Air Chief Marshal Major was commissioned on December 31, 1967 as a helicopter pilot. During his long and distinguished service spanning little over 39 years, he has worked in a variety of Command, Staff and Instructional appointments.

He has the distinction of having 7,765 hours of flying experience to his credit. He commanded a helicopter unit, which took part in operations in Siachen (the world’s highest battlefield) and commanded a Mi-17 squadron during the IPKF operations in Sri Lanka, for which he was decorated with the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry).

The Air Chief was awarded Shaurya Chakra for undertaking an exacting rescue mission on October 14, 1992 at Timber Trail in Parwanoo, Himachal Pradesh, where he along with his crew, rescued eleven stranded tourists out from a cable car, by hovering precariously close to the set of cables that ran above it.

Besides being a Fellow of the National Defence College, New Delhi, and the Army War College, Mhow, he attended a variety of courses like Junior Commanders’ Course, Jungle and Snow Survival Course and Higher Command Courses. He had the distinction of overseeing tri-Service operations including the Tsunami operations, during his tenure as Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations) at HQ IDS.

He was appointed as AOC-in-C, Eastern Air Command in September 2005. He was awarded Param Vishist Seva Medal (PVSM) in January 2006 and Ati Vishist Seva Medal (AVSM) in January 2002.

I was doing a bit of research on South Africa(planning to visit soon) and was surprized to find out they had gripen and hawk jets.

In short: how on earth did they afford them and why would they need them?
With the things one reads in the news about SA you would think they would have better uses for the money.

Is there any justification for them to have these aircraft, how are they maintaining them and why were the Swedes prepared to sell them in the first place?

I personally think they could have spent the money on a better cause.

What is your problem:confused: Is it your money they are spending?:confused:Should they justify to you?

Dhanush test-fired in Bay of Bengal
    [ 30 Mar, 2007 1633hrs ISTPTI ]
RSS Feeds| SMS NEWS to 8888 for latest updates

BALASORE: India’s indigenously developed surface-to-surface ballistic missile Dhanush was on Friday test-fired from a naval ship in the Bay of Bengal off Orissa coast.

The test launch was conducted from INS Subhadra , about 40 nautical miles from Chandipur-on-sea, at around 2.30 pm, sources said.

Dhanush , considered the naval version of surface-to-surface missile Prithvi, was being exclusively developed for the Indian Navy and has a striking range of 250 km to 350 km.

It can be deployed as an anti-ship weapon as well as for destroying land targets depending on the range. It can carry both conventional and nuclear weapons in its operational stage.

Friday’s test launch, carried out by scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), had been tracked from its take-off to impact point through an integrated network of sophisticated radars and electro-optic instruments for data analysis.

The 8.56 metre long missile had a launch weight of 4,600 kg and uses a single stage liquid propellant engine.

Dhanush was test-fired for the first time on April 11, 2000, from the integrated test range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea. However, it had failed at the blast-off stage due to technical snag in its software system.

The second test was carried out from INS Subhadra on September 21, 2001.

The two subsequent experiments were carried out on November 7, 2004 and December 28, 2005 from INS Subhadra and INS Rajput respectively.
