The RBS.15 Mk3 is not yet available in an air-launched variant, though the Mk 2 is, & has the required range.
Hmm…I guess that is another choice. So plenty of options..but IAF wants the Harpoon..any particular reason:confused:
found Aakash Yodha series on Youtube ! has some terrific rare footage of IAF operations–such as the Canberra, MiG-27, MiG-21FL, Mirage, Su-30K, etc..
Excellent find.watch all the parts.
btw…know where this is located?
Didnt know India had separate range for EW.
However the lives of both the maritime Jags and the Shars are coming to an end, so maybe it would be better to soldier on with the sea eagle for now and save the money for something else?
1.with the GDP growth rate slated to reach 9.2% in the current fiscal,India has plenty of money to throw around!
2.If you didnt notice its been almost 8 years since Kargil already, time for another misadventure from our neighbours..we better stay prepared with good air launched weapons rather than the dated Sea-Eagles…
:diablo:
Seriously speaking,if you can put a whole new radar and avionics suite in a aircraft, why cant you buy the weapons which would help in full utilisation of its capabilities?
And also, with the pen-pushing,putting spanner in the works MoD that India has,you can stay assured that these upgraded birds are going to be there for at least 10yrs if not more.
I was under the impression that the AShM Jags were going to be replaced by the Su-30MKI, with Brahmos? Could the MPA’s (Il-38/Tu-142) carry Brahmos or Club at the very least? If so there does not seem to be much point to this procurement?
Il-38s can carry Brahmos.
Tu-142s and maritime Jags carry the Sea-eagle.But I guess Tu-142 should be made compatible with Klubs or the Brahmos or at least Urans with the retirement of the sea-eagle.Its been reported that some nos. of Su30MKIs are in the maritime role.So that leaves only the maritime Jags and the Shars. The Jags have been upgraded with EL?M-2032 as are the Shars. So they need an AShM.
They cant possibly carry the Brahmos/Klub/Uran(too large/incompatible?)..
As well as the Sea-Kings..So requirement..
Is it absolutely certain that the drone wasnt carrying any Weapons of MAss Destruction?:D
I am surprised that the Kongsberg NSM is not involved in this. It certainly seems like a capable little missile.
Yes..I guess it should have been in the competition…
Among those sent tenders..Harpoon pretty much comes out on top.
Klub or Brahmos could have done..but I guess they are too large for the Jag to carry.
Is there any plans to increase the range of air launched Exocet like the MM40 blk 3?Or will the Rafale have to use the 70 km ranged AM39?
Indian AF, Ministry Clash Over Missile Buy
By VIVEK RAGHUVANSHI, NEW DELHI
India’s Air Force and Defence Ministry are clashing over procurement of air-launched anti-ship missiles. Ministry officials complain that only one bidder has been shortlisted, while Air Force leaders claim they are being pressured to accept lesser capabilities.
Boeing’s Harpoon was the only missile among those offered by five competitors that service officials said met their requirements to replace the Sea Eagle anti-ship missiles that arm the Jaguar aircraft fleet.
Because of the single-vendor situation, an Indian Air Force official said, the Defence Ministry has pressured the service to modify its technical requirements and refloat the tender.
The Air Force in October floated a limited global tender to France’s MBDA, Israel’s Rafael, Russia’s Rosoboronexport, and U.S. firms Boeing and Raytheon, seeking to procure unspecified numbers of anti-ship missiles for $100 million.
One of the main technical requirements is that the new missile have a minimum range of 100 kilometers, Air Force officials said. Only the Harpoon met that requirement.
The Defence Ministry recently directed the Air Force to reduce the required range of the anti-ship missile, the service official said — an unheard-of intrusion into Air Force affairs.
However, the service rejected the Defence Ministry’s directives and has stated it will not compromise the qualitative requirements of the new missile, the Air Force official said.
Defence Ministry officials said the procurement has been affected by the single-vendor issue, but they refused to comment further on the retendering controversy.
Sea Eagles are in service with Indian Navy Sea Harriers and Tu-142 maritime reconnaissance aircraft, but the Air Force wants to replace the Sea Eagle to improve its Jaguars’ anti ship capabilities.
The Sea Eagle is a computer-controlled, all-weather, fire-and-forget sea-skimming missile. Its active radar target seeker has a 110-kilometer range. The missile can disable warship electronics with jamming and countermeasures, the Air Force official said.
The service plans to buy new-generation, long-range anti-ship missiles to increase its firepower in littoral warfare, a Defence Ministry official said. The new missiles, in addition to a long range, should have a fast response to overcome advanced defenses. •
Certification process for Tejas on right track:Baweja
Bangalore, UNI:
HAL Chairman Ashok K Baweja said the first of the eight limited series production will fly this month and four more would roll out this year.Hindustan Aeronautics Limited today said that it had taken over project management of the multirole Light Combat Aircraft Tejas and the process for getting the aircraft for certification in 2008 was on right track.
Informing this at a press conference at ‘Aero India 2007’ at the Yelahanka IAF air base, HAL Chairman Ashok K Baweja said the first of the eight limited series production will fly this month and four more would roll out this year. Admitting that there was a slippage in the development of LCA, he said more number of aircraft would be put on flying mode to hasten the certification process.
Already five LCAs were flying and they have logged over 300 hrs of flight.
He said development of such aircraft was a complex one and some countries had abandoned such projects. However India was committed to having its own LCA and the process was on. ”If not in 2008, the certification would come through in 2009”, he added.Commenting on HAL’s future programs, he said that the company would shortly sign up with the Ilushyn Design Bureau and Irkut Aircraft Corporation of Russia for 60 tonne multirole transport aircraft with an investment of around 600 million US dollars.
Similarly HAL was also conceptualising the fifth generation fighter aircraft to be taken up at a five billion dollar budget.
Mr Baweja said that this would not affect the fifth generation fighter which would fly in 2018-19.
He said the Light Combat Helicopter, whose mock up was displayed at the Aero India by the company would be flying by the next Air Show. It was expected to take to the skies for the first time by September/October next year. :diablo:On existing programmes, he said that the Sukhoi MKI 30 programme was being hastened and HAL would complete the licensed production by 2014-15.
He said HAL had also signed up with Canadian Pratt and Whitney for making aeroengine components worth 500 million US dollars.
Replying to another question, he said that the tail rotor problem of Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter had been addressed and the Company was progressing well in its production schedule. The requirement of the Country was more than 200 choppers and the company was simultaneously addressing the export market for the aircraft.
On the brain drain from the company, Mr Baweja said that the inflow of a number of aerospace majors who see big prospect in India have come in large number and have taken some of its staff. However HAL was addressing the problem effectively by inducting more people and also through various other initiatives.

Thank You Aditya,
So it’s part of a fuel tank for the Energia launcher.I thought it was some sort of an aerostat radar balloon too, but it seemed attached to the aircrafts. Didn’t believe what I saw till Aditya posted the link.
Oh you were referring to the white object at the left hand side of the pix?I thought it was the one directly behind the Mig29.
That I think is an aerostat radar balloon…with fins.. Energia fuel tank dont have fins.
Anyone know what those white balloon shaped object is in the background (First Pic) ?
Kinda looks like aerostat radar balloons.
meantime, looks like India will buy into the sukhoi JSFski project.
JSFski?… ..Nice…:diablo:
btw..that first mig29K pix with partly folded wings kindof reminds me of the Stuka!
Didn’t realize I’d catch one 😀 Good thing this forum is catch and release or I’d be having some seafood for dinner tonight 😉
Small fry dont make good sea-food..they are only good for aquariums.:diablo:
Man, if you are pro chinese just say it. No harm there. There is plenty to be proud of, no reason to throw dirt on others in order to buff up your position.
Regards,
USS.
You think he’s pro and not anti something?;)
