The end of P2577 is worth telling even if it is not the subject of the photograph on e-bay.

I thank my Belgium contact for the following:

P.O. Young’s Hurricane crashed at Essene, 15 miles S.W. of Brussels. He was shot down by British troops. Young baled out, and was shot again whilst hanging from his parachute. When the troops ran to “capture” their victim, they realised they were terribly wrong. Young had several bullet wounds and the soldiers shouted “My god, he’s British”. Young replied: “No, in fact I’m South-African”.

He was evacuated to the UK and hospitalised, and passed away a few years ago as a AVM.

I now look forward to hearing about the demise of P2537.

Don’t forget parallax – viewer is not at right angles to the object. Also the last ‘7’ is on white/light grey – that doesn’t help.

Experiment by printing out the numbers on a sheet of paper then try looking at the tops of the numbers, also letters like ‘e’ and ‘o’, as you push and pull the sides of the sheet. To my aged eyes, there is a flattening out of the top curves as the angle increases.

is to be believed: P3577 of 303 Sqn Northolt was lost in the Thames estuary on Sept. 15 1940. Then P2577 looks the best candidate.

Have we got a fabric or aluminum-wing variant here?

P3577? Then a Mk 1, built at Langley. P2577? Then a Mk 1, built by Gloster Aircraft. Not sure if that is a fabric-covered wing or metal-covered.

So has anyone identified the location on plates 22 “British bombs on an enemy convoy” and 23 “More British bombs on an enemy-held aerodrome”?

Plate 26 looks very strange – possibly doctored?
Plate 1 is missing but thanks to post 19, I can see what it looks like.

Apparently I have the October 1941 reprint!

For security reasons the early wartime editions of this book, first published in 1941, did not reveal the name of the author, S/Ldr Paul Richey.

    Mark

That was why I was so suspicious Full title came from Librarything .com.

Thank you Mark and everyone. I’ll see if it is still there.

Well, I’ll probably get ripped to pieces for this because its my first post but here goes anyway. When I worked at Croydon Airport, ‘The Prop’ was a bit of a dump. I’m amazed its taken 40-odd years for someone to demolish it.

No incoming fire RetreatingBlade but did the pub make a tribute to its past?
For example close to Martlesham Heath is the Black Tiles pub and the proprietors have always had a display of sorts as a tribute to some famous WWII fliers. I have not visited it for four years though.

An explanation in English would be nice! So what is a rear-vision telescope then?

Is the Fairey Battle still there?

Very good question Geoff. It’s been ages since I visited the museum. 1977 To be precise!

Nothing here when you type in “raf northolt”:

The ops. room has never been open on open days.

It had for decades only two entrances. Now it wants four?!

So what was the point of knocking the whole thing down and then re-building it?

Well wessex boy, probably for the same reason that my cat goes spraying urine about the garden. Also when people move into a new house they change the decor. And this is from a developer who sees cemeteries as legitimate sites for housing developments.

I hope other members of this forum will offer you the supposed reasons!

The aerial pic of Ipswich Airport is almost covered with new housing, and shopping/recreational facilities, the area is totally unrecognisable apart from the newly refurbished Airport Lounge and Control Tower which had some preservation order put in place

Many of us wish that it was a refurbishment. Unfortunately it is a reconstruction and so is a pastiche of its former self. No longer does an arrivals and departures hall exist.

I have a colour pic of Dr H Hamilton’s Auster G-AHBL from 1976 to contribute if only I had access to a scanner. Any offers?
