The Russian army may well still have Pchela artillery spotting UAVs in the area – might have been one of those.

I always figured TVC might be useful for carrier ops – shorter take-offs, slowed (?) landings.

I didn’t think religious types were so aggressive though, i thought peace was more thier style and i thought saddam was secular in the way he ran his great democracy.

Yea well, who cares what you think – you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about.

Not exactly AF news but worth posting:

MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s Defense Ministry has ordered a large number of new-generation unmanned reconnaissance drones to be put in service in the next few years, a Russian electronics company said on Wednesday.

“Several dozen Tipchak UAV systems will enter service with the Russian army in the next few years,” said Vladimir Verba, general director of the Vega Radio Engineering Corp. “The first system will be delivered by the end of 2008.”

The new-generation Tipchak mobile aerial system has been designed for reconnaissance and target designation purposes on the battlefield in any weather conditions.

It operates up to six UAVs launched from a pneumatic catapult. Each UAV has a range of 40 kilometers (25 miles) and can provide targeting for artillery and theater-based ballistic missiles at distances up to 350 km (about 220 miles).

The drone is fitted with infrared and video sensors and has a real-time digital data link for communication with artillery units for laser-guided targeting.

“Our next project is the development of an attack drone based on the current design,” Verba said.

Some pics would be much appreciated… But I guess we’ll have to wait for Venezuelan propaganda officers to photoshop blue skies into the pics…

So little is being transpired from both sides.

The lack of decent information on all aspects of military operations (by both sides) seems to be the reason why every thread about the subject degenerates into a political debate from the second or third post.

Personally, I’m not interested in the politics of the situation as much as the military aspects of it.

The question about FENCERs that kicked off this thread was a good one – I’m curious about anything to do with RuAF sorties over Georgia – we know so little.

What makes you believe their kit was less advanced?

Ok, less advanced might be a bit strong – however, its hardly so superior that it would be something worth relying on in the grand scheme of things.

Nobody else seems to be mentioning those downed aircraft – I wonder whether this will be covered up or whether the initial report was flawed.

Russians declare the loss of an “Su-25 Frogfoot”, and a “Tu-22 Blinder”.

Tu-22 makes no sense, might have been a Tu-22M.

    Echonine,

Got a link for this news? I haven’t been able to find anything online.

MOSCOW, August 9 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s peacekeeping command said on Saturday the country’s troops have driven Georgian forces from the capital of the separatist republic of South Ossetia.

“Tskhinvali has been fully liberated,” a spokesman said.

The city has suffered major destruction since the start of Georgia’s ground and air onslaught that began early on Friday. Russia says 1,500 people have so far died in the violence, and 30,000 South Ossetians have fled across the border into Russia.

Chief of Government Staff Sergei Sobyanin told Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at a meeting in the Kremlin earlier on Saturday that “a real humanitarian catastrophe” is developing.

South Ossetian Prime Minister Yury Morozov confirmed that the city is now under the control of Russian troops, but warned that the death toll may rise.

He told Russian TV channel Vesti-24 that thousands of people have been injured, and that numerous residents remain trapped under the rubble of bombed-out buildings, making it difficult to assess the number of fatalities.

Medvedev announced earlier that the country’s troops had begun a military operation in South Ossetia to force Georgian troops to cease violence.

Paratroopers from Russia’s Ivanovo, Moscow and Pskov airborne divisions have been sent to Tskhinvali, and international news agencies have reported Russian air strikes on the Georgian town of Gori, near South Ossetia, the Black Sea port of Poti, and on two military bases.

The current conflict is a culmination of years of tensions between Russia and Georgia, which has accused Russia of trying to annex South Ossetia along with another rebel region, Abkhazia.

The pro-Western leaderships in Georgia, along with ex-Soviet Ukraine, have angered Moscow in recent years with their efforts to gain NATO membership. Russia’s Foreign Ministry accused Ukraine on Saturday of encouraging Georgia to launch an offensive against South Ossetia.

“The Ukrainian state, which has in recent times been misguidedly arming the Georgian army, and in so doing directly encouraging the Georgian leadership to engage in intervention and ethnic cleansing in South Ossetia, has no moral right to preach to others, let alone to seek a role in regulating the conflict,” the ministry said in a statement.

    franc,

South Ossetia is belong to Georgia, the “invade” is not an appropriate word here.

The term “invade” seems fair to me considering Georgia has not controlled the territory since the early nineties but “re-invade”, “re-take” etc. seem fine too.

Georgians claim to hold almost all of South Ossetia:
