    Ja,

I’m going to assume that by Ka-54 you mean Ka-50-2… Unless I missed another one of those Russian re-designation events that seem to happen every time I turn my back.

That’s relatively low tech stuff. They wouldn’t need a licence.

Unless they have something developed already they most certainly would need a license. And in any case, I’m primarily interested in latest gen stuff here.

    News.

MOSCOW, May 17 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s Air Force will receive two new Su-34 bombers in 2006, its commander said Wednesday.
Vladimir Mikhailov told government daily Rossiiskaya Gazeta that one of the planes was in an assembly hall and almost ready and that the other was under construction and would likely be ready in September.
He said Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov had inspected work on the planes at the Chkalov Aircraft Production Association in Novosibirsk
“A total of 1.6 billion rubles [almost $60 million] has been allocated for the aircraft,” Mikhailov said.
Designers and producers had managed to reduce the cost of an aircraft by almost 150 million rubles ($5.5 million) starting from 2007, Mikhailov said.
The designing of the new Su-34 bomber began in the late 1980s to replace the outdated Su-24 bomber. Experts say the new bomber has the potential to be the best plane in its class for years to come.

Not exactly an airforce question but certainly (a bit) related to Serbian armed forces:

Does anyone know of any Serbian company which has the capability, should a license (from, say, Israeli or Russian companies) be forthcoming, of making passive night-vision sights/goggles/binoculars etc?

Having models sans radar is fine but if Russian forces deploy HAVOCs in support of, for e.g., a UN peace-keeping mission in Sudan* then it is sensible to have them equipped in such a fashion so that they can be operated at night as well as during the day. Otherwise commanders on the ground could quickly find them selves in trouble if they can use their Mi-28As only during the day. Basically, the aim for the Russian armed forces (as for other nation’s armed forces) should be to have all their troops and vehicles fully night-capable regardless of the costs. In short – keep the TI cameras.

    * Where mm-waveband radars would be surplus to requirements as there are precious few tanks to shoot at.

Hey, now that we’re on the topic of big heavy transports, does anyone have any info on the air-cargo company that is flying a single Il-76 out of Belgrade airport? I know it was flying regularly last year as the big ol’ b@stard flew over my house a few times. Is it still flying?

As to Ru AF issues… When they take seriously, the concept of a well fed, well trained, well taken care of enlisted and officer cadre like the USAF ( what really makes the USAF effective )…. Call me. Until then, they will always have personnel problems with hair on them, as a normal course of doing business.

Hey elp, great to have you back.

I take your point about their need to improve training and the command structure etc – however, I do think things are moving in that direction. In theory it should not be long after 2010 that the whole armed forces is professionalised. While you may be able to treat green conscripts who are going to be going home in a matter of months one way it will be a different story with professional soldiers who are in it for the long haul.

EDIT: Also, it is worth bearing in mind that we actually still know very little about the RuAF – I was reminded of this when Garry asked someone recently when they last saw a Russian fighter with ‘real’ missiles hanging from the hardpoints. They’re pretty rare and yet we know that the Russians have fighters and missiles.

or crappie stealthy flying wing, poor excuse for a aircraft type thing, or worse still, sodding pilotless [radio controlled] crap…

Absolutely right! If boys fly fighters and men fly bombers it must be something like babies flying those stealthy flashy poor excuses for planes and something even further down the food chain controlling UAVs… Mice maybe….

there must be something good about the Tu-95, they have been in service for 50 years… was the Bear used over Afghanistan. I know Backfires, Blinders and Badgers where…

Would be nice if the BEAR and Buff were both used over the same theatre (at different times of course) but I don’t think they were.

Whats going to happen when these cold war behemoths are forced out of service by their ageing airframes? I’ll be most upset if airforces press modified airliners or transports into the cheap-mass-bombing role as has been suggested.

Lets hope this becomes the usuall view at the airbases around Serbia

    Would be nice wouldn’t it.

Oh and you’re completely right. I forgot to mention the very likely possibility that everything will be ruined by corrupt and, often, downright stupid, politicians and officials.
