Perhaps Dyson’s thoughts turned to the last iconic all British manned missile, sorry interceptor.:diablo:

To think that was the last Lightning they let me loose on before a posting to fat alberts.:)

OC Engs Brief; heres your team, heres the aircraft. Take it to pieces, go to London and put it all back together again behind the Officers Mess (Uphill with a gully running down the middle of the road IIRC). Which we did. Sep/Oct 76.

Edit from Operations Record Book [F540/541]
    N6022
    Up 2300 14th Jul
    Down 0330 15th Jul
    Crew of 7
Bomb Load 5 x 1,000; 7 x 500; 420 x 4 Incendiaries; Stick seen to burst across large sheds producing very large fires and explosions. Ran out of petrol and crashed at Newton Slotman (Flotman?). Crew baled out, 2 slightly injured. F540 states ‘finding that his petrol consumption had assumed alarming proportions, made hurried turnaround and ordered his crew to prepare for landing at sea. They reached the coast however, and baled out.

Maybe a silly question, never having worked with the DC8; but does it have a ‘flap limiting speed’?

All but the landing phase (Full Flap) appeared to be at ‘Take-Off’ flap, and they said they reached 300 mph on the final flypast:confused:

Just in case that some forumites have not come across the works of ‘Colin Cummings’; he has researched post war losses up to 1996 utilizing many sources but mainly Movements and Crash Cards.

My own gut feeling is the Crash Cards are most probably the closest to a correct date especialy as the Times quote the same date.

If Mr Mobbley is still alive (his son was when Sir Patrick Moore passed) and his Log Books are still in existance this may assist in clarifying the information.

The only one I have found so far is VV539 flown by Sgt Denys Mobbeley but this was on 30 Dec 51. Source; Last Take-off by Colin Cummings. ISBN 0-9526619-3-4.

One of the many links is:

Reading between the lines (2+2=5 most probably) the other Vampire did a wheels up, so repair and return to flight.

    I am most probably totally wrong, but my guess is, L-R;

The Lord Charles Portal, John Slessor, Sholto Douglas and David J Waghorn (or I.T. Lloyd).

I believe this photo was part of the PR in the runup to D-Day 1944.

    But then again:confused:

And sadly i beleive that ‘Brit’ crashed soon after filming! so that ended that chapter!

    See wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redcoat_Air_Cargo/.

IIRC this was a flight from Belize and was bringing service families home who also perished.

A very sad time at Lyneham.

Bomber Command Losses by W R Chorley, ISBN 0-904597-91-1, agrees with your 1st three statements.

KB704 VR-Y was lost on 10/11 May. The crew returned to base at 0144, overshot the runway and overran two ditches before coming to a stop, damaged beyond repair. No one was hurt.

However 12/13 Jun, 419 Sqn lost KB 714 (also coded VR-Y) including all crewmembers during a raid on Cambria. As stated in statement 4 but 714 not 704.

BTW, welcome aboard and merry Christmas to you.

As has been said, any gun law will only infringe on the law abiding citizen.
After Dunblane, the most law abiding folk, my brother included, lost £1000’s+ as their legally held weapons were taken from them. My brother was an award winning marksman for the military. All this was taken from him without recompense.

Unfortunately, weapons are still available on the black market throughout the world and still kill more people annually than any horrific massacres reported on the media.

You will never stop the bloodshed until there is nothing left in this world that can be used as an implement of death. ‘ Guns, knives, cars, sledge hammers, axes, machetes, bottles etc etc.

Gun laws in the UK robbed my brother of a sport and a magical weapon. It did not stop any idiot from obtaining a weapon and creating havoc.

My thoughts are that any knee jerk reaction will only serve the politics of this world not the man in the street.
