Great news today. The nice people Avocet Aviation Limited, especially
Lucas Chambers, donated three AR brake valves they had in their stocks. They are used, and out of the three I should be able to get one overhauled back to servicable condition.
It is really nice of them to help out and they will be recognised on my display board for their kindness.
Still looking for that elusive new valve, however….

Good news Captain. Is that the UK based spares company?
Will keep looking!

As far as I am aware, Thunder City ceased trading last year as Mike Beachyhead stated it had all got too difficult after the very sad loss of Dave Stock in the Lightning ZU-BEX (XS451) crash 30/11/2009.

Captain Bombay

Further to my previous post, I have attached a b/w thumbnail of N-E in 1957.

On another note, you thought that N-E had been repainted in Omani colours in Australia. Not so. It featured in Classic Fighters @ Omaka and ‘Wings Over Wairarapa’ photo galleries (2003/2005) in N-E colours and SGN stencilled on the fin along with ZK-JOT. The latter Provost is another story of a lost aircraft (G-BTDH – WV 666) rising from a crash landing near Lasham airfield UK in March 1998, to be rebuilt in the USA (N2416R) and still flown? in NZ.

Some of what follows has been given in previous posts. The following data has been compiled from various RAF Log Cards, AM Form 78; CAA UK, CASA Australia and the CAA New Zealand web sites plus the latest For Sale adverts. I believe this provides you with the closest thing to November Echo’s history that you will come across. Unless of course that someone out there knows different? I will stand honourably corrected. Please note that the aircraft never made it to be a gate guardian, thanks to the persistence of Mike Crymble.

WW397 Original Paint Scheme.

Captain Bombay,
Hopefully you are still out there. Having stumbled on this forum, I just had to register. I am one of the team that restored WW 397 N-E circa 1979. After being told by my lords and masters that it would never fly, I have kept a wry smile on my face for nearly 30 years.

I have a b/w photo of the aircraft in its original colours of 3 FTS RAF Feltwell was taken at the Battle of Britain display at RAF Honington on 14 Sept 1957. Unfortunately I have yet to find out how to upload it. But during its service with 3 FTS, WW397 carried the code letters ‘N-E’ on the fuselage sides and applied smaller on either side of the cowlings in black, the flight colours were dark blue ( roundel blue) cowling ring extended to within 2-3 inches of the anti-dazzle panel, there was also small dark blue band around each undercarriage leg, the spinner remaining matt black. [RAF Lyneham painted the spinner dark blue as it appeared more aesthetically pleasing]. The first aid panel on the left under the rear of the cockpit was white outlined in red. Although it is hardly discernable in the photo, the 3 FTS crest was carried on the top rear corner of the engine cowlings just below the windscreen. [Unfortunately at the time of restoration, 3 FTS crests were not available, unlike today where you can obtain almost anything] Not all of 3 FTS Provosts carried the school’s crest. Whilst WW397 was in service with 3 FTS it always carried the code ‘N-E’ and served from September 1954 to around April 1958 when 3FTS was disbanded: Source: Letter from accredited (by E.A.Chris Wren) aircraft enthusiast dated 2nd Jan 1980.

The original Paint Scheme Drawings including all decals for the restoration 1979-82 were borrowed from BAe Warton.

Further corroboration for the codes:- 3 FTS Codes for Piston Provost (2 letters); M,N,P,Q,S,T. Further identity coming later with colours associated with the Flight Letters as M (Red cowling leading edge), N (Blue), P(Yellow), Q(Green), S(Black), T(Black/Yellow); Source: Squadron Codes 1937-56 by Michael J.F. Bowyer and John D.R. Rawlings.

I will not enter the debate on your pending re-spray as I am very biased. More info to follow when I empty the loft and hopefully sort out the movements history.
