Simples!
Start with ‘familysearch.org’ it’s free and has many of the same record cards as its sister site ‘Ancestry.co.uk’ or.com.
This latter site is expensive unless you need plenty of lookups to original documents. You can also find discounts online and this year I achieved 50% off for my ‘worldwide subscription’.
I have also found 2 records of marriage on familysearch; one in Nenagh 1928 & one in Baltinglass in 1945. Unfortunately spouses are not listed.
Hope this is of help.
Hi Mick
You can apply for birth & death certificates to confirm the correct person. Just a quick look gives:
a birth in Kilrush 1915. Volume 4 Page 274 quarter Apr/May/Jun (Just maybe – 1914) I’m slightly confused.
a death: Kilrush 1952. Vol 4 Page 190, qtr Jan/Feb/Mar.
When researching a family, I try to find Family Bibles, Christening Cards, weddings etc that may give a clue. As said above, you can apply for his service record as I have in the past and have confirmed what we thought were family myths.
Good Luck
AM – thanks for that!
In reply to AM:
The FN64 ventral turret was developed from the FN60 fitted to the Blenheim. According to ‘Lancaster at War 2’ it is shown in cutaway drawing inside front & rear covers. The Lancaster Story by Peter Jacobs has a little more info that makes this a plausible fit.
Moggy,
If the crew listing follows normal format, then the bomb aimer became POW, and the mid under gunner is confirmed evading capture in the text.
Just a taster from that wonderful search thingy that I have not verified!
408 squadron carried a mid under gunner on some of its Lanc II’s in the summer of 1944.
Lancaster Mid Under Turret, was the Nash & Thompson FN64.
Early production Lancasters were fitted with rear firing under turrets, but its use was discountinued. Reintroduced in Mid 1944 by a handful of 1 Group Squadrons.
The Gunner sat facing rear, fired by means of periscope sight. Turret in place of H2S set. Mid Upper Gunner manned both turrets!
2 x Browning .303 in
Ammo – 500 rpg.

Am not a Lanc specialist, but 2 x 408 Sqn losses that night carried a mid-under gunner.
Any wiser?
408 Sqn – Lancaster II DS726 EQ-Y
Linton-on-Ouse
Op: Cambrai rail facilities
Crashed at Seranvillers-Forenville
6 crew perished, 1 pow, 1 evaded capture (both survivors were RCAF). 6 of the crew were RCAF. S/L Stewart was OC B Flight. 2 other 408 Sqn ac & crews were lost that night.
Not an answer but some added info.
Never seen one so pristine in service life. There are many different Marks and Types that are configured for various engines.
I have mislaid my engine manuals but I seem to remember (30+ yrs ago) the Piston Provost (Leonides Mk 12601) Starter S7 Mk10; 37F/7267. Probably the same for single & twin Pioneer (127), Pembroke/Prince/President and Whirlwind helicopter. All 9 cylinder radials. Chipmunk was different (4 cyl Gypsy) S7 Mk2; 37F 4666994.
Hope it helps and not going to confuse.
Apparently postponed for 48 hrs. Nothing wrong with the aircraft nor the weather. We is back to the falibility of the human being. In Turkey it was called Turkish Tummy, in Cairo it Egyptian gut rot. Get well soon Bertrand.
The final flight of this project looks to start tonight (Sat 16 Jul 16) 22.00hrs UTC. Leaving Cairo for Abu Dabi in a 48hr hop. God speed, enjoy and safe journey.
