Finny/Topspeed, enough of your thread drift. Take your bickering to your own thread. If not I will ask the moderators to close this thread.

For those that are interested in the progress of Solar Impulse 2, they are 500km from California, a photo shoot is programmed over San Francisco and a landing at Moffett Field sometime tonight hopefully.

    Yet another milestone.

    Saving the Swordfish

In 2001, George Martin wrote a piece of music to raise funds to save the last two Swordfish aircraft.

Thank you AgCat for putting my mind at rest after more than 35 years. I only typed that last paragraph as an afterthought. Another mystery solved by this illustrious forum. I personally have never heard of GI airframe flying under that serial. Perhaps someone else can enlighten us.

If anyone is in the area of the Lincolnshire Film Archive, Boston, ( http://www.lincsfilm.co.uk/listings/listing541560.html ), they have the following film available for viewing:

    543 THE QUEEN AT CRANWELL
    Cranwell (RAF) 1970
    1.25 min Colour 16mm Silent
H.M. The Queen visits the RAF College at Cranwell (12 June 1970) to mark its 50th Anniversary.

For those who were wondering why WW397 was mentioned above, it was the last Piston Provost to fly officially in Royal Air Force service. This final flight was from 27MU RAF Shawbury, landing at RAF Halton 30 Oct 1969. The aircraft was given the Ground Instructional number of 8060M.

What remains a mystery is that between landing at Halton in 69 and arriving at Lyneham in 1979 is that the aircraft had logged an extra 4hrs 40mins flying time!

Bill, – I too remember them arriving, WW397 (which we rebuilt to fly at Lyneham 1979 – 83) arrived at Halton after I had left. Basic airframes – Piston Provost; advanced – Hunters; Airfields – Hunter, Canberra & a couple of Piston Provosts for ground running & Marshalling.

I believe WW397 is still languishing in New Zealand awaiting USA authorisation to import it.

George, thanks for that, good luck.

From my limited resources it appears that BT308 (originally a Manchester) was struck off charge (SOC) in May 44.

LL735 took its place for the Metro-Vick jet engine trials including the Beryl. S.O.C. – Mar 50.

SW342 looks to be favourite as it was S.O.C. – 30 Jun 56 and as previously said had a Mamba in the nose. There are pictures around of it in this configuration at Bitterswell in 1953. (Unable to locate at this time).

As to yellow undersides, this was standard colour scheme for prototypes.

My two pennyworth is only here to confuse!

I seem to remember, way back in the fifties/sixties, the ‘Brighton Run’ along the sea front, a chassis with a merlin on it that went like stink. Put my Panther 600 sloper to shame!!

Excuse my ignorance, but why have a deterrent that isn’t a deterrent other than to keep your mates (sorry voters) in work?

The deterrent (as far as we know) has worked for the past many years. Now we are telling peoples to vote Labour and all adversaries are welcome to our shores.

    Have I got this wrong?
